All kids are different

That isn't true. It depends entirely on the child and how they grew up. Children have been (and still are) soldiers and leaders in the real world.

Also, I doubt the GOT writers care about Tumblr.

Even if it wasn't realistic... WHO GIVES A SHIT ABOUT REALISM IN GAME OF THRONES. You're literally just angry because people on Tumblr annoy you. Well, get over it.

Sorry about how spicy this take is. I need some dang lunch.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-30 07:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, Tumblr has a lot of problems but I'm so sick of the way this community uses "Tumblr" as shorthand for"everything awful".

and I agree they weren't thinking about that when they wrote this plot

PLus, does OP realize how young so many of the characters were in the books? And since they're based on real medieval/Renaissance historical figures...

WHO GIVES A SHIT ABOUT REALISM IN GAME OF THRONES

People have always given a shit about realism that doesn't have to do with fantasy elements like the dragons. Like the endless wank about how there wasn't really that much rape and child marriage in the era GOT is loosely based on.

I expect a series to be tonally consistent. The noble king who does the right thing gets decapitated. The queen who tries to fix slavery crashes the economy and starts a civil war. Etc.

Honestly. On this com, tumblr is blamed for literally anything slightly bad ever happening. And it's just like...it's not that deep fam.

Fantasy show based loosely on European history. Child kings were rife, even if they had advisors and regents. Also Joan of Arc.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-30 07:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I sincerely doubt they were trying to please tumblr.

haha, do you think Joff was horrible just because he had power? He was straight-up sadistic.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-30 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
A lot of fantasy novels go with the wunderkind pure good cinnamon roll child hero trope, true.

"All children are evil little shits" is equally black and white and unrealistic, only to the other extreme.

I don't mind her existing because the others existed. So she becomes a product of her own character and upbringing, and not because she's a child that must represent the morality of every other child in the world.

She's no less realistic a character than Talisa, Ramsey, Dany, or Arya, to name just a few.

Bear Island knows no king but the king in the North

I can understand people being upset if she were a show!only character but she is a book canon character (even though she hasn't been in it much as of yet). And based on what little we see of her in book canon, she's shaping up to be just as much of a little miss badass there as she is on the show.

And remember she's a Mormont, so she's related to Jorah and the old Lord Commander. Of course, she's gonna be a badass.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-30 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Do yourself a favour and don't read the books. The show aged up just about everyone who's under 25 in the books and most of them are far more mature in the books despite being anywhere from 2-10 years younger than they are in the show.

But even without knowing that, it's pretty obvious the Ds don't care about tumblr. The young people posting gif sets and arguing about social justice in between complaining about their homework and their parents aren't paying for HBO or Sky or whatever premium service in their country carries GoT. They don't count for ratings, their money isn't going into the pot to finance the show, and their enjoyment is irrelevant.

Yeah wonder what OP would make of Robb leading the northern armies at 14.

I don't recognize her. Is she a show original character who doesn't exist in the books? Anyway though I doubt the social justice-obsessed tumblr fandom is a blip on the GoT writers' radar so lol

(Anonymous) 2017-07-30 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
She's Lyanna Mormont and is a book! canon character and Jorah's first cousin.

She hasn't appeared directly in the books but have been mentioned on multiple occasions. Mormont women according to the lore are famous for being as strong and fierce as the men. The reason they are called Bears in the first place is that one of the Mormont matriarch is supposed to have had children with a bear.

The most significant thing she's done in the books (so far) is sending Stannis Baratheon serious hate mail. He basically ordered all the Northern to swear allegiance to him now that Robb is dead.

Lyanna was the only person who got back to him with a letter that says "Bear Island knows no king but the king in the North whose name is Stark."

So she's definitely one to keep an eye on in book!canon and not a D&D invention. Also at this point, she's older than or about the same age as book!Arya, so it's not inconceivable that she could be such a badass.

Aww, it's cute how you think the showrunners care as much about Tumblr as you <3

Yeah... I can't see the writers of GoT giving a single shit about what tumblr thinks tbh.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-30 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
They probably do care more than you'd think. Not about Tumblr, but Twitter has a broadly similar point of view, and they probably do care about Twitter (and the wider Internet ecosystem which grows out of Twitter) - not because of the numbers but because Twitter is disproportionately popular / influential / visible with people who do thinks like write TV shows.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-30 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm with you on disliking the character. She's fine in the books because she's limited to that letter she sent to Stannis, but absolutely intolerable in the show. It's a shame that they felt it necessary to cut out all the other Mormont women so we could have some ten year old tell everyone why they're wrong.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-31 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sure history has a few examples of naturally adept childhood leaders. You can still complain that it feels improbable and forced, though.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-31 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
You're sure.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-31 03:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I have seen maybe a grand total of one (1) gifset featuring this character on Tumblr, and I've seen not a single person saying 'slay' or 'yas queen' about her. And I follow a good deal of fandom blogs, "SJW"-type blogs, and fandom/"SJW" mixed blogs, so either you saw one annoying person doing it and got pissy, or you're getting mad over your own imagination.

Dislike a character all you want, but at least be honest about why you dislike them lmao. "Waaahhh this character sucks bcuz Tumblr," like, get over yourself lmfao. And to think that the showrunners care about Tumblr's opinion of them? Yeah, they probably wouldn't continue to treat their other female characters so poorly if that were the case. They care about the people who are actually stupid enough to enjoy such a shit show, not the critical ess-jay-double-yous on tunglr.hell
