The writing is not an excuse to quit when the first season were even worse. I liked them back then when I was a teen but jesus, I rewatched some of the episodes some years ago with my mom and I cringed so hard it's not even funny. So much second hand embarrassment. Plus everything looked so cheap.

So maybe people had liked the first season when they were younger, but as they got old they got more discerning.

Maybe the things that they don't like are particular to Moffat (his glib, "snappy" dialog, his fairy-tale conceits, his prioritizing being "clever" over telling a story that made sense.

Also, as "cheap" as S1 might look now, it's got much better production values than the classic series. But wobbly sets and green bubble wrap monsters didn't take away from what was often brilliant writing.

I don't need an excuse. I'm a grown ass adult so if I don't want to watch something cause I'm not enjoying it anymore I won't. Lol. And I was a teenager with a limited concept of subjects like sexism, privilege ect when Who first returned. Liking the earlier series had me watching longer than I would normally have as I got more aware of the things I didn't like.

edit: oop this was more directed at the comment above but yeah I agree with your age stuff.

I'm fine with Doctor Who being stupid and goofy and ridiculous and camp and cheap. Doctor Who isn't necessarily a good show, and that's OK. I enjoy it anyway, because I like big dumb nerd shows.

I don't like Doctor Who being a 5-year-long examination of Moffat feeling guilty about being a dick to people and trying to figure out whether the fact that he's smart justifies him being a dick to people and an endless supply of the exact same kind of angst.

Because ultimately, there are multiple different kinds of problems that something can have as a work of art. It's not a binary scale where you slide along from good on one end, to bad on the other.

"Some years ago" meaning what, the 60s? The 70s?
