Age Gaps in Fiction

Your favorite pairings, the dynamics you like, the line you don't cross - tell us about age gaps in your fandoms

I don't like anything more than puppy love if either character is under 15/16. I don't like too much hand-wringing about it being morally wrong in-universe. And I don't like anything at all non-con. Oh, and I find obsessions about waiting for birthdays for sex creepy. (It reminds of of the creepy website 'countdown clocks' for the second the Olsen Twins would turn 18)

I really do like the older character worrying they're not good enough for the younger. I like when one character is really inexperienced and the other isn't, both if the experienced one is the younger or the older.

Other than that, as long as both characters are written as being really into it and enjoying it I don't have a lot of hard squicks. I mean one of my favorite pairings for a while was a 300 year old teenage boy and a few thousand year old anthro rabbit.

I agree with everything you said and now I'm really curious about pairing you mentioned.

Rise of the Guardians Jack Frost and Bunny (the Easter Bunny) Jack's voiced by Chris Pine and Bunny is Hugh Jackman and they have a pretty compelling rivals to friends arc in the movie.

Replying to myself with more thoughts. I like age-gaps because they're kind of a built in sort of character conflict, but also in fic what you read is what you get. It doesn't matter beyond suspension of disbelief how realistic it is.

I read a thing one time that said Wash and Zoe's relationship in Firefly was inherently non-consensual because in the real world due to the power dynamics inherent in both society's misogyny and society's racism it was impossible to have a consensual relationship between a white man and a black woman. And ok, even if you believe that to be 100% true, IT'S STILL FICTIONAL. Therefore if the fiction says they're in a healthy and consensual relationship then you can't really pull "Well, in OUR universe..." into it.

And it's ok if you can't suspend your disbelief. With CSI and Grissom/Sara I just couldn't see any chemistry between them and he narrative attempts to convince me they were super duper in love just confused me.

But if I found a fic that was something like... Qui-Gon survives Darth Maul's attack, but Obi-Wan still trains Anakin and as an adult Anakin falls in love with Qui-Gon? Heck, I'd give it a shot, and if the fic did a good job of presenting it all as consensual and healthy and something that both characters are happy with I'd go with it. Same as if a fic painted Linda and Bob Belcher's relationship as deeply unhappy and abusive I'd accept it in the fic (I mean, I still wouldn't see it that way in canon! But I'd be cool with the idea that in this fanfic they have an unhealthy relationship.) And truthfully I tend to like fics that start out with a much less plausible scenario because it feels like the author is going to work harder to convince the reader.

So yeah. It's a plot device I like. As long as the characters are at least old enough to pilot a Gundam in canon I can suspend disbelief and be cool with them happily dating, including dating characters older than them in canon. But I'm cool with people not being able to suspend disbelief and/or being squicked by it as long as they don't go around screaming the P word at everyone over it.

I love that I could tell what pairing you meant before seeing the answer.

Jo and Professor Bhaer. My first ship ever. My favorite dynamic is a kind, chill older person with an emotional and fiesty younger person. The older person has to be really kind or else I can't ship it.

The only age-gap pairing I like is Alexis/Ryan on Castle, and it absolutely has to be under the circumstance of Alexis being out school and something horrible' s happened to Jenny and comforting friendship slowly becomes something more.

Age gaps usually squick me on some level and particularly if they met through an adult whose job it is to work with teenagers (student/teacher, usually, but that shit Super Gals! pulled...) But damn if I'm not shipping 03!FMA Roy with Al and Winry both. Though with Winry, the age gap is honestly the least of the issues there.

Ha, it's funny, because I'm not always too squicked at age gap, but 03!Roy/Ed squicked me something fierce.

Most of my age difference pairings have a definite power imbalance in the relationship like boss/employee (Grissom/Greg) or master/apprentice (Qui-gon/Obi-wan). I usually like older guys (50s-60s) with adults (20s to 30s). I don't start shipping Qui-gon/Obi-wan until Obi-wan is at least 20 but I like how messy their relationship could be since Qui-gon basically raised Obi-wan. But I also ship Grissom and Greg because I think they share a similar outlook in how they treat people and being interested in exploring new things, and I can see them being very happy together and having a very respectful relationship.

I'm not usually into age gaps, but I'm super invested in Daenerys Targarion and Jorah Mormont. Thirty years at least between them but she could do no better than him (and has done a lot worse.) The queen-knight dynamic means that the inequality is lessened, and her magic and her dragons even more so. All he is, is a very parfait, gentil knight who is utterly devoted to her, and apparently the whole world knows it.

I'm not watching the current series so no spoilers, please. Something dreadful is going to happen to him, I know it. OMG.

Well, in my current fandom, most of the characters I'm shipping are immortal, so age gaps aren't really an issue. I guess the biggest age gap would be between Sauron, an immortal Ainur older than time itself, and Celebrimbor, and elf who is immortal and yet was born. So who knows how big the age gap is. But that relationship is really messed up anyway. Age gap is the least of their problems.

I've stopped reading Potter fics, I realize, because I'm no longer interested in reading about the relationships of teenagers. Happened sometime in my 20s, but now I just don't really read about young characters in relationships. If their the same age it doesn't bother me, I just don't care.

I tend to like relationships that defy expectations in some small way at least. Like with my main OTP, Angbang, Melkor is Sauron's boss. But the way I see them, Sauron is as close to an equal in power as Melkor could ever have and speaks his mind and asserts himself and Melkor listens to Sauron and does what he wants. And they are so alike in a lot of ways that they work well together. Plus, I always imagine that Sauron has much more sexual experience because the way I see him, he much more easily divorces sex from feelings and also sees sex as a power tool just like everything else is to him. So even though it is a boss/employee relationship with a hierarchy that can make romance complicated, it works for them and power is shared in a way neither of them would ever do with anyone else.

KAKASAKU - They live in a world where you basically grow up super quick after you graduate the Academy at age 12. ESPECIALLY if you are the unlucky Genin team that gets put a supposed C-Rank mission and it turns out to be either a B-Rank or A-Rank in disguise. (wave arc) By the end of the 4th Ninja War? Sakura may have been 17-18, but her camaraderie and everything with Kakashi that could have been the start of a possible relationship? No problem. They'd been through so much, she was confident in herself, he respected her so much and they were basically equals. 14 year gap would be nothing.

SessKag - Eh, Demons. I just like them because I HATE Inuyahsa. The two timing bastard...that and Sesshoumaru ended up being semi-ok with humans thanks to his surrogate human daughter. Besides, every fic I ended up reading usually has Kagome as older anyway and/or she ends up left in the future for an indeterminate amount of time before the Well allows her to pass through again. (tales from the house of the moon. best fic for that ship progression i have ever read).

Sparrabeth - There IS an age gap there. But Jack has never really treated Elizabeth like any sort of child. He's pushed her, yes, if only to get her to realize WHO and WHAT she is, that her sheltered life is NOT who and what she is. It's why I refuse to see the 5th movie and if EVER acknowledge her kid, it's her's and Jack's.

Snape/Hermione - Smart snarky people. That's pretty much it. *shrug*

Jareth/Sarah - I blame David Bowie. And the fact they just HAD to add that Dance Scene and the most bittersweet love song EVER. Then the confrontation song...also very bittersweet. Goddammit. *sigh* My heart~
