Age Gaps in Fiction
(Anonymous) 2017-08-01 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)Re: Age Gaps in Fiction
(Anonymous) 2017-08-01 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)I really do like the older character worrying they're not good enough for the younger. I like when one character is really inexperienced and the other isn't, both if the experienced one is the younger or the older.
Other than that, as long as both characters are written as being really into it and enjoying it I don't have a lot of hard squicks. I mean one of my favorite pairings for a while was a 300 year old teenage boy and a few thousand year old anthro rabbit.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-02 06:22 pm (UTC)(link)I read a thing one time that said Wash and Zoe's relationship in Firefly was inherently non-consensual because in the real world due to the power dynamics inherent in both society's misogyny and society's racism it was impossible to have a consensual relationship between a white man and a black woman. And ok, even if you believe that to be 100% true, IT'S STILL FICTIONAL. Therefore if the fiction says they're in a healthy and consensual relationship then you can't really pull "Well, in OUR universe..." into it.
And it's ok if you can't suspend your disbelief. With CSI and Grissom/Sara I just couldn't see any chemistry between them and he narrative attempts to convince me they were super duper in love just confused me.
But if I found a fic that was something like... Qui-Gon survives Darth Maul's attack, but Obi-Wan still trains Anakin and as an adult Anakin falls in love with Qui-Gon? Heck, I'd give it a shot, and if the fic did a good job of presenting it all as consensual and healthy and something that both characters are happy with I'd go with it. Same as if a fic painted Linda and Bob Belcher's relationship as deeply unhappy and abusive I'd accept it in the fic (I mean, I still wouldn't see it that way in canon! But I'd be cool with the idea that in this fanfic they have an unhealthy relationship.) And truthfully I tend to like fics that start out with a much less plausible scenario because it feels like the author is going to work harder to convince the reader.
So yeah. It's a plot device I like. As long as the characters are at least old enough to pilot a Gundam in canon I can suspend disbelief and be cool with them happily dating, including dating characters older than them in canon. But I'm cool with people not being able to suspend disbelief and/or being squicked by it as long as they don't go around screaming the P word at everyone over it.

I'm not watching the current series so no spoilers, please. Something dreadful is going to happen to him, I know it. OMG.
Re: Age Gaps in Fiction
I've stopped reading Potter fics, I realize, because I'm no longer interested in reading about the relationships of teenagers. Happened sometime in my 20s, but now I just don't really read about young characters in relationships. If their the same age it doesn't bother me, I just don't care.
I tend to like relationships that defy expectations in some small way at least. Like with my main OTP, Angbang, Melkor is Sauron's boss. But the way I see them, Sauron is as close to an equal in power as Melkor could ever have and speaks his mind and asserts himself and Melkor listens to Sauron and does what he wants. And they are so alike in a lot of ways that they work well together. Plus, I always imagine that Sauron has much more sexual experience because the way I see him, he much more easily divorces sex from feelings and also sees sex as a power tool just like everything else is to him. So even though it is a boss/employee relationship with a hierarchy that can make romance complicated, it works for them and power is shared in a way neither of them would ever do with anyone else.
Re: Age Gaps in Fiction
SessKag - Eh, Demons. I just like them because I HATE Inuyahsa. The two timing bastard...that and Sesshoumaru ended up being semi-ok with humans thanks to his surrogate human daughter. Besides, every fic I ended up reading usually has Kagome as older anyway and/or she ends up left in the future for an indeterminate amount of time before the Well allows her to pass through again. (tales from the house of the moon. best fic for that ship progression i have ever read).
Sparrabeth - There IS an age gap there. But Jack has never really treated Elizabeth like any sort of child. He's pushed her, yes, if only to get her to realize WHO and WHAT she is, that her sheltered life is NOT who and what she is. It's why I refuse to see the 5th movie and if EVER acknowledge her kid, it's her's and Jack's.
Snape/Hermione - Smart snarky people. That's pretty much it. *shrug*
Jareth/Sarah - I blame David Bowie. And the fact they just HAD to add that Dance Scene and the most bittersweet love song EVER. Then the confrontation song...also very bittersweet. Goddammit. *sigh* My heart~
