I see you two of your secrets made it in today!

Also, people will probably just refer to the Doctor as her while it she is a woman.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-02 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
You're trying way too hard.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-02 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
The Doctor is he or she as the case may be, not they. One person, no matter the meat suit.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-02 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)

I'm not a fan of DW, but is this an official thing? I'd just assume the first 13 would be he/him and the new one she/her not all are now they/them.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-02 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah I would have assumed the same thing. At the moment, the Doctor is she. Previously, she was he. I don't think it's the same thing as being trans.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-02 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I doubt it will work that way since the Doctor isn't trans. But I guess it could since real trans people don't use they/them, either.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-03 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
As a real trans person who uses they/them, what does this mean?

(Anonymous) 2017-08-03 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Special snowflake gender identity.

Even accepting the notion that this somehow makes the doctor trans, why then would that make her a "them/they"? I think you're confusing trans with gender neutral/agender/whatever bullshit is flying around these days.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-03 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
In most perspectives, or at least most of the perspectives of people who are part of those identities, gender neutral / agender people would still be under the trans umbrella. After all, trans is essentially "not the same as the gender you are assigned at birth", and very few people are assigned agender at birth LMAO.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-03 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Stop confusing sex with gender. You're not "assigned" anything at birth, your biological sex is registered.

I have trouble seeing an alien who can literally change their sex as someone who relates at all to trans issues.

I feel the same way about characters in anime who could do it, Ranma, the starlights from the Sailor Moon anime, etc... I don't know if I would ever call them trans because it's a magical situation that we just don't have in real life so we don't really have language that reflects it.

"I have trouble seeing an alien who can literally change their sex as someone who relates at all to trans issues."

Why is this a sentence on the Internet?

Ranma seemed pretty firmly to consider himself a guy, and really wanted to get the curse lifted too. I doubt he would relate to trans issues. That's not a compliment to him, but I think it's probably true.

The hell you talking about, OP? Unless Thirteen ends up being trans, the only reason people would say they/them would be if they were referring to the Doctors as a whole.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-02 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
In which case they would have used they/ them anyway even if 13 was male. Because "they" is plural.

Words. They mean things.

Not really?

I mean, I guess it's kind of an arguable point but... the Doctor is a single person, not an assemblage of 13 different persons. The Fourth Doctor and the 13th Doctor are actually the same person. That's kind of the point of the show. So you can't be referring to "the Doctors as a whole". The Doctor is not a gestalt entity, the Doctor is the Doctor, a single individual.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-02 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Using accurate pronouns is transphobic now?

(Anonymous) 2017-08-03 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
This seems... unnecessarily confrontational, but otherwise I agree. As someone who prefers gender neutral pronouns for myself, I'm thrilled that I can now use "they" pronouns for my favorite character. And that other people will also, if not for specific incarnations, at least for the Doctor in general. It's just a really nice feeling.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-03 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
I'll stick to he unless I'm specifically talking about 13th. I'm pretty sure almost everyone will do the same, no one uses They for the Master.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-03 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Why oughtn't they, though

(Anonymous) 2017-08-03 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
??? I use they for the Master, as long as I'm not talking about a specific version, and most of the people I've talked to do also.

I share your "cry more"-attitude, but I doubt transphobia plays much of a part in all this.
