Modern ways of speaking online that annoy you

(Anonymous) 2017-08-19 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
Some of mine:

- Calling people "beans." Where did that even start? And why?
- That thing where people insert a "clapping" emoji between every word, when they're trying to make a point about something. Is it supposed to read like you're clapping your hands in front of someone's face, the whole time you're talking?

the use of 'smol' .. as in "smolbeans."

Any and all use of text speak when you are not texting or on Twitter. If you are typing out an email or a post on Tumblr, Facebook, or a place like this, just type real words. Some abbreviations are fine, but not constant "u ppl" kind of stuff. Even if you are posting from a phone, try to avoid it, but if you're sitting in front of a real keyboard then you have no excuse.

I have never seen the beans thing but that is super weird. Is it said as a nickname, like directly addressing someone like "Hey, Beans" or is it just used instead of "people" like "those beans are jerks" or something?

I agree with the clapping emoji thing, though. I think it's obnoxious as hell and I kind of want to slap anybody that does it.

"bean" is mostly used as kind of an affectionate diminutive, often self-directed, often associated with "smol". "i am just a smol bean" that kind of a thing. it's just a slightly cutesy affectation i guess.

I've never seen anyone make a good point in between those clapping hands, either. It's an annoying tactic used by stupid people to say stupid things.

At this point, I don't think I see anyone use it seriously anymore

People seem to type "forever ago" or "a bit ago" and all I want to do is correct them with "A WHILE AGO".

"a bit ago" conveys a different meaning than "a while ago"

So does 'forever ago'.

'A bit ago' - not that long ago.
'A while ago' - a long time ago.
'Forever ago' - ridiculously long ago.

Commas instead of ellipses,,,, like this,,,,, to indicate,,,,, I guess sarcasm or aggression? It seems have the most popularity with SJW's when they're refusing to listen to a sound argument.

Re: Modern ways of speaking online that annoy you

(Anonymous) 2017-08-19 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
I've seen that!

I really don't get the way most SJWs write. I feel like, if I were passionately advocating for a cause, I'd at least bother to act like I've passed the 2nd grade. I'm not even that snobby about spelling and grammar, because no one is perfect - but some things, come on, try a little.

I mean, it's not any different than any other kind of slang. It's a different way of expressing yourself. Not all contexts demand formality

to be honest it doesn't really annoy me at all.
right now real life is so much more annoying (news, nazis) that I just can't be bothered getting annoyed by anyone's spelling, punctuation, or humorous idiosyncrasies.

I would guess the clapping emoji is to emphasize each word, as opposed to placing a period after each word. But then, there are people IRL who clap when trying to make a point, and they do clap forward toward the person, so maybe it's both.

Modern ways of speaking... I'm starting to see "heckin" a lot. It's weird.

I still don't like the phrase "throw shade." Especially when every stupid new site has to use it as though it were clever. You believe some celebs are feuding? Just say so and prove it. Otherwise, shut the fuck up and leave the trashy bait to the tabloids.

...wtf?! I have literally never seen anyone do this, and I think if anyone did it to me my immediate reaction would be to slap them. That's hella obnoxious and rude and aggressive.

(Also, "heckin" is one of the stupidest fucking words.... just say "fucking", jesus christ, you aren't fooling anyone with the dumbass baby talk.)

I think heckin started as doggo speak? You know, dog memes, pics + captions? It's funny in the meme, not sure about anywhere else...

I still don't like the phrase "throw shade."

God, this! Mainly what I hate about it is that I feel like it lends itself way too easily to over-use. Words like "feud" or "attack" or even "criticism" and "dis" require that there actually BE a feud/attack/criticism/dis. Whereas "shade" is this thing that is so subjective and vague that you can literally just SAY someone "shaded" someone else and even when they didn't actually dis them in any way, it's hard to conclusively prove they didn't "throw shade." So now it's every celeb gossip site on the internet's favorite term, because all they have to do is use it in their heading and they've got instant clickbait. All it does is give their readers permission to believe some totally fabricated juicy celeb drama just went down.

Bean might have come from being as in human being? People tend to make words sound "stupid" to be cute. Like small to "smol" or how everybody has their cat or dog call humans "hooman" because not being able to say or spell words right is supposed to be cute and stupid.

Whether it is effectively cute or not, that's subjective.

I love "beans." I also love "smol." I agree with you about the clapping emojis thing, though.

I sometimes say "human beans", but I'm usually just being funny. At least for me, it comes from being so close to "human beings". Just a little mispronunciation and voila, you have a funny saying. Like I've also been known to say I'm "edumacated" when I'm being silly (instead of "educated").

Replacing 'ck' in words with 'cc,' so like 'succ' or 'thicc.' It just gives me a weird visceral hate reaction.

I would want to pronounce those "such" and "thich."
