Identity Crisis

(Anonymous) 2017-08-20 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel like I get into an identity crisis every time I get into a new fandom/character/ship. I don't have much of a personality and have always just projected characters that I like onto myself. Whenever I get into something new, I start feeling conflicted if the characters I latch onto are different from my previous favorite characters.

It's all really stupid. I wish I didn't do it, but I have no idea of who I actually am.

Pic please OP

Hey OP could you link me to where you got that pic? Its gorgeous

I like this particular movie because you can go through on a rewatch and see how the whole thing was seeded throughout. And sometimes I catch new cues I didn't catch before. Plus the whole thing isn't just about the twist, it's about the characters' journeys coming to terms with this weird new thing in their lives, and the relationship between the kid and his mom. It hits me in the Parent Feels.

Google made in abyss. It is like the fourth picture.

This. The Sixth Sense has fantastic rewatch value. Especially if you watch some behind the scenes stuff so you know what to look for next time.

In fairness, Jafar is based off or inspired by Maleficent's design.

A good movie will be rewatchable regardless over whether or not it relies on a 'twist'. Movies like The Prestige, The Sixth Sense, The Usual Suspects, and Memento.

There are some movies where the twist reduces the rewatch value but those are generally movies that are pretty bad overall. Movies like High Tension, The Forgotten, and Now You See Me.

And then there are the movies I thought were really good that I nevertheless do not ever want to watch again. Schindler's List, The Dark Knight, Logan, Saving Private Ryan...

Sure, but that is usually for emotional reasons. Requiem For A Dream is a great movie. I will never watch it again.

Favourite paintings/pieces of art

(Anonymous) 2017-08-20 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
A very talented artist friend offered to paint something for my new apartment. I'm more than happy to take her up on it, but I have no clue what kind of motif I would like.

FS, what are your favourite paintings or pieces of art? If you found them online, please post links as well. I need some inspiration.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-20 07:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Same.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-20 07:48 pm (UTC)(link)
It could easily not be. The timeline has changed so many times, in so many ways, that anything we've seen in a prior episode could, technically, have happened quite differently.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-20 07:49 pm (UTC)(link)
there are definitely some similarities, but there are also some major differences. for instance, Bourdain's schtick is much less about Political Correctness Gone Mad than Clarkson's.

Old fandoms

Currently mostly-inactive fandoms you miss?
Are glad you don't have to deal with/hear about, anymore?
Wish you'd been there for, during the heyday?

+1

Of course if the only thing a movie has going for it is the twist ending, it's going to be a bad movie.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-20 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I love The Prestige and The Unusual Suspects in particular, and have watched both movies several times. But (and I stress this because I'm reminded of a thread in the gc this past week about someone's author friend who wanted to write a novel with a sibling incest twist) the rest of the book HAS to be good building up to the twist. The twist can't be the only interesting thing about the story.

it'd be nice if they stopped giving a domestic abuser roles tho.

Re: Identity Crisis

(Anonymous) 2017-08-20 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Sometimes, I worry about how much I've always been drawn to "love-is-weakness" characters. If that's a statement I happen to relate to, because of my own damage - or if it's something I'm more inclined to believe because of how much I like (well, love) those characters.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-20 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
A big difference is one is often shown learning local customs and adopting them during his visit and Anthony Bourdain ridicules them and everyone around him when he's abroad.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-20 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
The episode where Bourdain goes to Thailand, visits a burlesque club where all the performers are transwomen (who he refers to as "ladyboys") and then complains when a performer he deems unattractive kisses him on the cheek was uncomfortable. Not Top Gear levels of uncomfortable, but still kind of... yeah.

Google reverse image search is helpful in figuring out the origins of many images, anon.
