Actual grooming or these two characters with an age gap happened to share a roof once when the younger one was underage grooming?

(Anonymous) 2017-08-24 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Why do you jump to assuming that it must be fine actually?

OP didn't even mention the fandom and they still got people justifying it somehow

1,000 years old

(Anonymous) 2017-08-23 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
In before people guess the fandom: I also dislike the ships where someone gets romantically involved with someone they raised. It's really common in fandoms where a character is 100s of years old, and raises a human. It seems to pop up a lot in manga...

(Anonymous) 2017-08-23 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
But is the younger character actually a child or is this another case of the alarmist "this adult/almost adult character is ~child coded~" silliness? Because the latter happens a lot lately.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-23 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Naw, usually they actually helped raise them

(Anonymous) 2017-08-24 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
It's so funny, because if OP had the opposite complaint, F!S would take their story completely at face value and be outraged and up in arms about it. But in this case, everyone assumes that OP is in the wrong and the ship is fine. Just act on the assumption that the ship is probably fine and OP is being an alarmist.

Lol, this was my first thought too. I try to give people the benefit of the doubt but, let's face it, if somebody uses the 'it's all so gross and terrible' card, they don't tend to be the most reasonable of fans.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-24 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
The first time I saw "child coded" applied to a very obviously adult woman who just happened to be "girly," I was seriously confused.

What does that even mean?

If a grown-ass woman who pays her own rent likes fluffy, pink things and happens to be a bit of an optimist she's not really an adult? The audience is supposed to view her as "a child"? Even though she's very obviously not a child?

I seriously don't understand this whole "child coded" thing at all.

Nobody is going to tell you you're wrong for thinking the ship is fucked up. Fans will tell you you're wrong for thinking they shouldn't enjoy a fucked up ship just because you don't.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-24 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Nobody is going to tell you you're wrong for thinking the ship is fucked up.

This does not seem correct in my experience.

But also, OP seems to be saying in addition that they just don't want to see or deal with the ship in general because it bums them out. Which seems valid to me.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-24 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry, but that's the biggest bunch of bullshit I've read.

Do you not fandom? People will absolutely tell you this.

Could it be? A mature adult who simply doesn't join the fandom, as opposed to joining and flooding the tags with hate? Amazing!

(Anonymous) 2017-08-24 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Before I read the entire secret, I thought you were talking about math and poor grooming/hygiene skills.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-24 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
I see too much about how "gross" Keith / Shiro is to take this kind of thing at face value.

But obviously you can feel how you feel, and you're just squicked, not joining roving 'anti' groups.

There are ships that gross me out too.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-24 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
I love how everyone in this thread is jumping on OP and accusing them of telling people they can't ship a certain pairing, when it's pretty obvious OP never said or implied that.

Why are yall so defensive about weird ships. Is this really the hill you fuckos wanna die on.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-24 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
Hmmmmmm.... I wonder why people are defensive of their ships.... what on earth would make them feel defensive....... it's a mystery.......

And your contribution isn't judgemental at all. "Weird" ships? Suuure. And don't pretend you didn't really think "sickos" not "fuckos".
It's pretty obvious OP is saying exactly that. As are you.

yrs, someone who ships two adult men who first met as complete strangers in their late 20s. JSYK

There's nothing wrong with a ship grossing you out, sometimes a ship is just a big flat NO and there isn't really anything to be done about that.

But so long as you're not going around harassing anyone that does like it then how you feel about it is fine, blacklist it if you can otherwise keeping away from it is probably the best thing to do(lord knows I avoid the tags for ships that squick me).

You do you OP.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-24 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
Hello OP. I too had to leave a fandom because I hated a popular ship. And you know, I could very much come up with reasons why it's a 'problematic' ship. But you know what? I just hate it. It squicks me. There's nothing moral about it, I'm not a better person for hating it, I just really do for a lot of petty but very important to me reasons.

So, my advice to you - Grow. Up. Embrace your inner petty asshole. Stop trying to moralize it and just go. In the long run you'll be a lot happier and a lot healthier mentally.

Just... ignooooooooore it. And if you can't, accept that this fandom isn't for you and move on. If you expend any amount of mental energy trying to dissect all the whys and wherefores a ship you don't like is "bad", you're automatically the loser. I know it's tempting, I too catch myself falling into that trap all the time. "I hate this ship because it's WRONG" just feels so much better, doesn't it? But don't fall for it. People who do make fandom a worse place to be for everyone. Just get away.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-24 09:44 am (UTC)(link)
I totally get where you're coming from, OP. Some ships are incredibly squicky.
The amount of vitriol in these comments makes me think that people are rather defensive of their various ships...makes me wonder if you've hit a nerve lol.
Ship and let ship, but people also should understand why others may be squicked by their particular ship and not get all defensive about it.

I don't know what pairing you're talking about, but there are pairings that squick me for similar reasons.

The main one I can think of right now is Aria/Ezra from Pretty Little Liars. Some people think it's fine because she was a teenager and not, like, 10 or something. But he was her teacher, he was in a position of power over her, and I thought it was gross and creepy.

I know some other people find it creepy too but a large percentage of the fans find it ~so romantic~ and probably would give me shit for being squicked by it. But I don't care, I have enough confidence in my opinion to say that I know that I'm right. It IS creepy regardless of what they say, and they're wrong if they think it's not.

Of course, if you know it's creepy but still ship it because you like fucked up pairings, I can respect that. But the people who say "it's not creepy, it's romantic!"...I have no problem saying those people are just wrong and I don't give a damn what they think of me.
