Do you think 'cumslut' is an offensive term?

(Anonymous) 2017-08-23 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I started following someone who got into a huge fight with someone over the word. They thought the word was offensive and didn't like that the person (who was a former friend of her's) was using it to describe a character. Do you think it's offensive?

To me it's not necessarily a word I find offensive, but it's too vulgar that I would probably unfollow/block someone who used the term a lot.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-23 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
It's definitely demeaning, and I wouldn't like being called that. For a fictional character, I think it might depend on why they're being called that?

Re: Do you think 'cumslut' is an offensive term?

Yes, context would matter.

"In my headcanon Jenny is such a cumslut and I RP her that way" is different from "here's another pic of Jenny, my favorite cumslut" when the pic has nothing to do with cumslutting and they're using it as a casual synonym for "woman" or something.

probably, but i don't give a damn

Without context, yes.

However some people are into that sexually. If you use it in kink, it's a different context.

Re: Do you think 'cumslut' is an offensive term?

(Anonymous) 2017-08-23 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the closest would be "not necessarily."

Is it in terms of kink? Does the character think of themselves that way? Cumslut is a kink term and if it's being used like that, it's not.

If you randomly call someone a cumslut as an insult not in the frame of kink, then sure, it can be offensive.

I don't care.

I agree with you that it's not offensive, but it is vulgar. I wouldn't unfollow or block someone who used it a lot though. At least depending on context. Idk. Despite being demeaning, I don't think it's inherently negative, and in a fandom space, I would be inclined to assume the person using the descriptor meant it as a positive.

Kind of like when people call characters their trash [insert relation here].

I can't think of many situations where any permutation of 'slut' wouldn't be offensive as anything other than a self-description or dirty talk.

If you're directing it at real people who don't consent to it, it's at least vulgar.

Re: Do you think 'cumslut' is an offensive term?

(Anonymous) 2017-08-23 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, it's not something a lot of people would probably want to be called (unless they have a kink about being a cumslut) - but I wouldn't get worked up, if someone called a fictional character that. Especially in re: to some porn they wrote. It seems too ridiculous to care much about.

Offensive is purely subjective, but to me, no, it's not offensive.

Re: Do you think 'cumslut' is an offensive term?

(Anonymous) 2017-08-23 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
depends on tone/context

Re: Do you think 'cumslut' is an offensive term?

(Anonymous) 2017-08-23 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes.

If someone wants to use it to describe themselves because that is part of their fantasy play and they get off on it, it's fine. Calling someone else that who has not expressed a desire to be called that is always offensive in my book. Even if just a fictional character.

If it happened once, I wouldn't unfollow, but if it happened a lot, I definitely would.

Even if just a fictional character.

This is the part I just don't understand. How is calling a fictional character a cumslut offensive?

Especially because, as far as I can see, by your logic a fictional character a cumslut is always offensive, isn't it?

In many cases yes. And people who've experienced it abusively are not obligated to assume the best possible interpretation. (Although this is very much a "block and move on" moment, since arguing the semiotics of slurs and porn keywords usually ends up in Humpty Dumpty territory.)

Re: Do you think 'cumslut' is an offensive term?

I've never heard it used outside of a pornographic setting... or as an foul insult (that sounds a little too silly to take too seriously). I have trouble being offended by it for that reason, but I wouldn't like to be called it by a stranger in any setting beyond an orgy with strangers.

Idk about generally offensive but I personally find it off-putting when people talk like that about fictional characters, they're not real sure but it's just so obscenely vulgar to me that I can't really understand the appeal of using it.

But I guess some people are into that so whatever.

Aiming it at a real person however is another matter and I would consider it 100% offensive unless the person in question was okay with it.

I personally don't find it offensive, but I might consider blocking people who used it too much as well... not because it was threatening, but I'd fear the person was an idiot with an extremely limited vocabulary and it would just annoy the shit out of me.

I don't find it offensive, no. There are very few words that are "offensive" to me. But I've only seen it used in terms of the kink, which, no, I don't find it offensive at all since I am a huge cumslut myself haha.

No, mostly because I immediately think of "Listen here, cumslut!" and that makes me smile.

Re: Do you think 'cumslut' is an offensive term?

(Anonymous) 2017-08-24 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
It is, for me, extremely offensive.

If I heard a friend using it about me or a person I knew, it would end that friendship, whatever the sexual habits of the person it was being used to describe.

If I saw someone use it about a fictional character, I'd simply think them extremely vulgar and probably avoid their company (unfollow/block/whatever) in future.

Since you asked.

Well if you use it offensively yeah. Honestly I can't see any reason to use it outside kink/sexual situations
