Getting off on pedophilic and/or hebephilic fantasies ought to concern a person

God, this.

Like, when did something this basic become a controversial opinion in fandom?

Whenever it really starts to fuck with my brain that a bunch of fandom thinks writing smutty underage noncon is totally fine, I talk to my (totally liberal, university educated) friends who aren't in fandom, and they say things like, "Wow, that's so weird and disturbing." Or "I don't think I'd even be able to stick around if people were ok with stuff like that." Or "Wait, you don't mean they're writing all this horrible stuff between the leads?"

I'm not sure if you have non-fandom friends you feel comfortable sharing your fannishness with, but if you do, I highly recommend getting their opinion on this. I really helps whenever I need confirmation that a lot of fandom is in fact confused and a bit gross about this issue. :)

When people stopped "Your kink is not my kink, and that's okay" and started "You terrible, horrible, person! If you don't only fantasize about kittens and rainbows you should kill yourself!"

You know who I've discussed what I write about with? My licensed therapist. I use it as a tool to deal with past trauma (which does include being raped and suffering sexual abuse as a child). Some people journal, some people keep a diary, I deal with things through writing fiction.

I'm going to take my therapist's opinion over your "educated, non-fandom" friends any day of the week.

That's funny. One of the educated, non-fandom friends I mentioned is a therapist.

For fuck's sake , are you SERIOUSLY speaking over a CSA victim with "well I have a therapist friend who agrees with ME"?

Fuck off.

DA, but whole crap, you need to get your head on straight and realize that our various traumas don't dictate who we can and can't discuss a matter with. What kind of fucked up world are you advocating for?

Not gonna lie, I laughed.

Also, as a CSA myself, I'm glad your comment didnt get into ayrts personal experience. It's an awful thing to have experienced, but it's also not some kind of definitive end to a debat. Nor should it be.

Ha, thanks anon! Honestly, I've had some experiences myself. I just prefer not to bring them up when I'm arguing about this topic, because someone's experiences - including my own - don't determine my stance on this whole thing. Like, it doesn't even factor in. I'm not more right because I've experienced abuse myself, and someone who opposes me isn't more wrong because they haven't, you know? I've seen tons of CSA survivors on both sides of this, and it's never their personal experience that affects how I view their argument. :)

This just in, fandom people are different from normies.

i can't believe your normie friends are incredulous about a very nuanced and context-specific issue! who would have thought!

DA

Okay, here's the thing. When open-minded people who aren't in your air-tight little niche, think something in that niche is fucked up, it's probably fucked up. The people in thethe niche are, far more likely to be biased by their constantly reiterated behaviors and ideas becoming normalized.

Yes, because anon above obviously would have presented the issue with complete impartiality and all relevant context, and not have spun everything like mad to suit their own biases.

Fiction depicting underage relationships is neither new nor exclusive to fanfiction. And for the most part, the people who periodically start screaming about how dangerous mainstream fiction that depicts those relationships are and how the writers are clearly actual rl pedophiles are brushed off as pearl clutching loons.

Re: da

(Anonymous) 2017-08-27 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
Um, mainstream fiction that depicts sexual relationships between distinctly underage characters and adult ones and depicts the relationship as erotic is almost nonexistent. Maybe because most "normies" realize how creepy and messed up it is. Not sure what weird modernized dark ages you're living in if you think that shit is all over the place. Like, do you read a fuckton of Gabriel Garcia Marquez or something?

Re: da

you dont read that much, do you

Re: da

(Anonymous) 2017-08-27 07:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Allow me to introduce you to this obscure little series called A Song of Ice and Fire. Which was so reviled by ~the normies~ for its detailed and romanticized depiction of the rape of a 13-year-old and her journey to figure out how to enjoy fucking her much older warlord husband that each and every book in the series has hit the bestseller list and the entire thing's been turned into a much-celebrated tv show.

It's not "almost nonexistent". It's actually pretty damn common if you read fantasy, historical, or pseudo-historical fantasy fiction. It's also not that rare in literary fiction - because remember, we're talking about teenagers here, not seven year olds, and it's culturally accurate to a lot of settings.
