I have an enormous time deadline on me right now plus I'm not well physically or mentally and so waking up constantly at night for hours at a time is not fucking helpful.

I'm taking a trip out of town for a week on Saturday, and me and my dad are taking the train while everyone else drives. Haven't informed my dad that my anxiety is really, really bad at the moment and I have avoided public transport for the past five years. I Was all up for the idea of a train journey with my dad and now I feel like it's going to end in a massive panic attack. Rrgh.

I would obviously never say this to her, but I'm sick to death of my friend complaining about how her depression is triggered by the fact that she will never be perfect at her chosen pastime. We're talking two or three posts a day.

Meanwhile she doesn't give a crap about anyone else's mental health and has even ignored her best friend who is having a tough time with their family after coming out as trans. Said best friend called me instead in floods of tears.

She's basically a self-involved borderline narcissist at this point.

Re: Non-fandom rants

(Anonymous) 2017-10-06 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's something she needs to address with a good therapist. Being depressed by not having unrealistic expectations fulfilled isn't reasonable. Ironically, if she quit complaining and dedicated all that time and energy to practicing her chosen pastime, I bet she could at least improve if not achieve perfection.

Maybe you don't want to call her out, but you also don't have to feed her selfish need for attention.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-06 07:11 pm (UTC)(link)
No one is perfect. She's going to have to deal with that somehow.

I hate being such a little pussy bitch at message boards. I can't be confident at anything I post if it's in opposition to the view of the person I'm replying to, and I always get this feeling of dread, like they're going to rake my ass over the hot coals and dox me or some shit just because I dared to have an opinion. And it doesn't matter if its a debate where I hold mounds of irrefutable proof, I must be wrong and either everyone will turn on me or a few will and the rest will just shrug.

I mean, I'm aware this is all just silliness in my head, but I struggle with it all the time and I hate it. So I try to stick to as many lighthearted posts as possible, and only jump in debates when it's "safe" and I know I have someone to back me up. I hate being a coward.

Re: Non-fandom rants

(Anonymous) 2017-10-06 06:34 am (UTC)(link)
I can relate too this, although my problem is a little different. I actually have a lot of conviction in my opinions and views. Twenty people disagreeing with me probably won't convince me I'm wrong if I've thought something through and feel confident in my opinion. But I hate conflict so much that it doesn't really matter that I believe I'm right; people's hostility feels just as bad regardless.

WHY DID HALF OF AMERICA VOTE FOR DONALD FUCKING TRUMP!!!!????

(yes, I know some of why some people voted for him; I just needed to do the Internet equivalent of yelling)

Re: Non-fandom rants

(Anonymous) 2017-10-06 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, god, I haven't stopped asking myself that question since last year. I don't care how many times people try and explain all the reasons why some voted for him, and why some still support him. I will never, ever get it. He should've lasted a week AT MOST when the campaign started, nothing more. I just can't believe people fell so easily for his bullshit.

Re: Non-fandom rants

(Anonymous) 2017-10-06 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
Some people are in denial, or don't care about the other stuff. Some come from a different time, or grow up worshiping sacks of shit like this and believing they can do no wrong. Some folks are easily fooled. I don't think it's hard to believe. Awful and regrettable, yes, but not hard to believe.

Re: Non-fandom rants

(Anonymous) 2017-10-06 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
It is good to keep in mind that half of America didn't vote for him. I mean, he did lose the popular vote.

Bernie got fucked, and Hillary just wasn't a good enough opponent.

Combined with the tactics of "Everyone is sexist and racist and you can only atone by voting for Hillary".

You tell me I'm a sexist or a racist or a homophobe unless I do X, I will have to find a really really good reason not to say "Fuck you, I'm doing Y" and there just wasn't a good enough reason to go along with the socially "Correct" bullies.

Google psychological reactance.

Ugh. I'm not poor, I have health insurance, but I'm terrified of making all the phone calls that will lead to doing all the stuff I need to do in the next couple weeks because I keep thinking I can't afford to pay a lawyer, a tax prep person, taxes, house insurance, and vet bills.

And I'm also afraid to go to the doctor in case whatever's wrong with me (sinus and upper chest congestion, itchy eyes and sometimes throat, numbness around my left ear canal and into my jaw that sometimes feels like it moves) is more serious than allergies (never had them before) or maybe an ear infection. The last time something similar happened I went to a dentist who said I had some swelling going on near my upper jaw, and maybe some infection but my teeth and jaw weren't the source. I didn't have insurance at the time so luckily he wrote up an antibiotic prescription, and the swelling and numbness disappeared. And the only diagnosed ear infection I ever had was in that ear, so maybe it's chronic. I dunno. I'm just scared in case it's not easily fixable.

Re: Non-fandom rants

(Anonymous) 2017-10-06 04:57 am (UTC)(link)
Sounds like an ear infection to me, but you should call the doc and be sure. As a fellow hypochondriac, it's almost always a routine thing, and think horses, not zebras.

Finally got to the doctor today. He gave me a steroid and a referral for PT. I'm annoyed, though, that he only gave me tramadol for the pain. He's very hesitant with narcotics, I get that. But the tramadol only takes off the edge of the pain. And now that he won't let me take naproxen, which I was taking with tramadol before (admittedly I was taking too much, but I don't think that means I should have to cut it off entirely), I'm in pain. I don't expect to sleep much tonight. I hope the steroid starts helping the pain, but so far I"m not very optimistic.

Uh...yes,actually. When you're taking "too much" of a drug, it's quite reasonable to expect that your doctor will not support that, for your own good. I'm sorry you're in pain, but that's how prescribing works, unless your doctor is shady.

Pain sucks, I get that, but believe me, dying from addiction is worse. Your back problem probably isn't chronic, so dialing back is in your best interest. Even if you're a chronic pain sufferer, developing drug tolerance sucks because the pain gets harrder and harder to manage as you need higher and higher doses to achieve the same result. I hope the PT helps and you get better. Good luck!

No, I will not use a special pronoun when talking to you. For one, you dont use pronouns when talking to someone, you only use them when referring to someone in 3rd person. And two: THERE ARE NO NEUTRAL PRONOUNS IN OUR LANGUAGE. There simply aren't (at least none that won't make you whine about them "dehumanizing" you). And not anything that can be used as a placeholder either. And no, inserting and English "they" into a sentence is not a solution. So if you're so hellbent on a special pronoun, move to a country where the language makes that possible.

Re: Non-fandom rants

(Anonymous) 2017-10-06 01:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Its actually very common for people to insert an English word into conversation if no appropriate equivalent exists in that language. Even the French do it, despite their hard on for language purity. I mean, feel free to refuse to use "they" as a neutral pronoun, but be honest that this is YOUR decision and don't pretend like there's an imaginary rule that says one language can never borrow from another, LOL.
