Annoying Fandom Things

(Anonymous) 2017-10-15 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
It makes me angry when half of the fic in a small fandom are crossovers that star some other fandom's characters in the small fandom setting.

What annoys you about fandom?

Currently, the fact that you pretty much have to be a BNF already to get any sort of feedback on fics. Low hits, a >10% hit/kudo ratio and comments only incredibly rarely kind of stings.

I know this is one of the absolutely sucky things about fandom but is it because you write rarepairs/a less well known fandom/a less popular pairing?

This is going to sound like a humblebrag but it's not meant to be. My only fandom presence is posting fics. I'm not remotely a BNF. My fics generally get about 10-12 comments. The only reason I can think for that is that my spelling and grammar aren't awful, I write porn, and I write the most popular characters in a very popular series.

specifically about a particular fandom, the people who for some reason are still insisting that Craig/Tweek from South Park is not canon because they're just faking it for the townspeople's entertainment or some shit. Like no, at this point it is beyond obvious that they're supposed to be a real canon couple. If you watched "Put It Down" and came away still convinced that they're faking and are only doing so because the town wants them to for coolness points, you're not going by canon, you're just in denial because you don't like the idea of Teh Gay in your show unless it's making fun of Teh Gay.

this is in South Park now?? I stopped watching it a few years ago and had no clue!

Creek is canon now? Damn, I need to start watching South Park again.

Re: Annoying Fandom Things

(Anonymous) 2017-10-16 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Just because this is their view does not make it wrong.

Besides, if you've been watching South Park at all, you would know that just because something is done doesn't make it real or permanent. And I'm not saying that because EWWW TEH GAY GET IT AWAY SO ICKYYY. This show has a history of faking out, undoing storylines, or just plain having anmesia. It's not a stretch that the Craig/Tweek coupling could be nothing but a stunt. And quite frankly, it's just as annoying to have someone assume you're homophobic and/or in denial just because you don't quite buy a pairing. Sometimes it isn't TEH GAY. Sometimes the creators give the audience plenty of reasons to not trust them.

I love the Beatles but practically every time they're mentioned on some TV show some old fart thinks it's real funny to do an impression of Ed Sullivan. If I wanted to hear from a talking corpse I'd watch a zombie movie.

How ships have to be "healthy." Sometimes I want to ship characters who hate/are terrible for each other, and that used to be fine. Now it makes your ship invalid and you a homophobe it's slash, a misogynist if it's het, and both if it's femslash.

Re: Annoying Fandom Things

(Anonymous) 2017-10-15 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
This. I saw something recently on how fic had a duty to 'address the inherent problematic aspects of a pairing' and I just....

People can if they want to? But I don't want to click on a hetfic and get some ten page essay on the inherent power imbalances between men and women in a patriarchal society and how that influences the very concept of consent when women are socialized to default to agreement and so on and so forth.

Also, it's awfully convenient how generally the ships someone likes need next to no 'addressing of inherent problematic aspects' but less well liked ones are held to much higher standards.

The fact that I seem to have become a BNF in my ship to the point that when I'm not contributing anything, people are begging me for more even when I've said I'm not in the right mental state right now. And I really wish there was more contribution by other people. More than half the posts in the tag are mine.

Some fans can be entitled pieces of shit. I know how you feel about wanting others to contribute for once. Writing is great, but reading stuff from other people is nice too. :(

Hope you feel better soon. <3

When people tag f/f ships on Ao3 when the story is predominately m/m. And the f/f ship has like a few lines in the background...

It’s one of the reasons I’m not as fond of ao3 as other people because holy fuck does it happen a lot.

The thinking that decides whether something is acceptable or not based on the first episode. Or even the goddamn trailer. I keep on seeing people acting like TLJ is a complete loss because they didn't like the character ratios in the trailer.

if it doesn't grab you that's fine but not everything that disappoints you is garbage. It's making me feel defensive about wanting to give things a chance because I like them. Because I'm a fan and I get excited about new canon!

People who call other people out for having problematic sexual fantasies. They're fantasies, you guys. Not real life.

Re: Annoying Fandom Things

(Anonymous) 2017-10-15 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
When people use personal anecdotes to try and justify something in canon. Like once I was talking about a ship that I didn't like because it seemed way to one sided and the girl really didn't get to develop past that relationship. I had some guy arguing with me about it claiming it was okay because he had a girl who would go crazy if she didn't have someone of his when they were apart.

I had no idea how to respond to it. I see similar stuff with people going "[blank] character reminded me of this person I know irl who is a total asshole so [blank] is an asshole."

Female characters being sidelined. Of course a lot of that is on the creators.

AO3:
I wish that writers didn't check Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings or any of the other archive warnings if they check No Archive Warnings Apply. It doesn't make sense.

Also, when the [Insert Fandom Name Here] RPF is tagged when there is no Real Person Fic. I have a feeling some writers don't know what RPF actually is.

So I just rewatched Hellboy II yesterday for the first time in years. I meant to watch the first one, too, but I couldn't find the dvd (yes I know might as well be shadow puppets, my internet is slow as shit.) And afterwards I went poking around Ao3 for fic. Every single fic was tagged with a character named John Myers, and in most of them he was paired with someone. In a lot of them, he was paired with multiple characters.

I had no fucking clue who this guy was and googled him. He was an FBI agent from the first movie, basically the one normal character thrown in with the "freaks." I watched the first movie at some point, but I have zero memory of him. Why the fuck was he so popular? I want to read about weird creatures, not forgettable slightly-snarky FBI dude. But he's young and (apparently? idk he does nothing for me he's too bland) good-looking and white, so he must've become the fandom bicycle. It's like Clint/Coulson. Blech.
