Sure, that's fair, it was incorrect of me to say it that way and I apologize. And obviously this is a tricky conversation to have because we're arguing over relative levels of characterizing something that neither of us really have statistics on, you know.

But with that said, I just don't think it's accurate that there "aren't that many" really well-written relationships between female characters. There are plenty of them. Far less than there should be, admittedly, and far less than in comparison to male characters. But I think you're exaggerating how rare it is.

And I think that, in general, if you're interested in f/f shipping and fic, there are ships and fandoms and media that provide that. If you're fundamentally interested in it, you can find things that satisfy that interest. Obviously no one has to be interested in it either way, that's fine, we're all just living our lives.

So, basically, in the context of responding to OP's post, I don't think that the relative rarity of female relationships is a good explanation of why people don't ship f/f. And positioning it as a explanation for not shipping f/f bothers me a little for that reason.

I hope I'm making sense here and not just blathering around.

DA

I think you're misrepresenting the availability of well written f/f relationships, platonic or romantic or sexual. It's easy to say they exist in gross number, but that's ignoring everything else. Certain genres have tons of f/f interactions, like shoujo animanga, but others like spy thriller stories or action adventure video games don't at all. Depending on your story genre of preference, f/f might be virtually non-existent.

Maybe. I don't know! It's obviously going to be difficult to make any generalizations - none of us really have the data to back it up.

Although spy thrillers and action adventure video games do have f/f ships - off the top of my head, Atomic Blonde and Tomb Raider. Obviously that doesn't prove anything either way, especially as Atomic Blonde is extremely recent.

I was gonna say, I've seen a ton of Lara/Sam for Tomb Raider.

I think you're ignoring the root of the problem by placing all the responsibility on the fans with few f/f ships. I don't appreciate what you're insinuating.

I don't think that there's anything wrong with not having f/f ships. I mean, it's just shipping. So I'm not sure what I'm really insinuating there, to be honest.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-20 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sure.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-20 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
what do you think that I'm insinuating?

(Anonymous) 2017-10-20 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
What do you think is the real reason why people who claim to be interested in f/f ships don't actually have that many?

(Anonymous) 2017-10-20 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
I don't really know. I don't think there's one specific answer. If I had to say what I thought was the most likely reason, I would say it was because something about the dynamics of shipping and fic didn't work with f/f relationships for them. Because fic and shipping is a really specific thing, I think.

I just don't think it's accurate that there "aren't that many" really well-written relationships between female characters.

Within western, live-action film and tv, there really aren't that many well-written, substantial relationships between female characters. There are some relationships between female characters that are well-written but are only a minor element of the overall story. However, if one is looking for movies and TV where both the women are prominent characters within the story and their relationship is prominent in the story, then there are very few.
