[silent/early sound film]

(Anonymous) 2017-10-25 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, that's unique! Who's the dude/who's your favorite silent actor?

(Anonymous) 2017-10-26 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
I think that's Fatty Arbuckle.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-26 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
NAYRT—yeah, he’s not unknown, but what he’s known for is... not good.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-27 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah

(Anonymous) 2017-10-26 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, I think that is who it is.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-25 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
There's definitely a few that have caught my interest. They had heartthrobs just like now so it doesn't surprise me.

When I see pictures of the ladies some of them look really good. I don't usually find out names but maybe I should.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-25 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
NICE.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-26 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Is that Fatty Arbuckle?

(Anonymous) 2017-10-26 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
That was my first guess.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-26 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know who that is but he has a kind face.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-26 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
If that’s Fatty Arbuckle I think I remember reading he was a pedo, or something.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-26 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
No, not a pedo. He was put on trial for manslaughter, in a case which ignited a tabloid frenzy that was heavy on innuendo and light on facts. Two mistrials, and acquitted on the third trial and given an apology. Nevertheless, his career was derailed and his reputation didn't really recover.

Kind of sad that, even today, that people remember the accusations about him, but not the fact that he was acquitted.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-26 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
A young woman died after a party, and he was accused of raping her with a coke bottle. I think the whole thing was a backlash to the perception of Hollywood as Babylon West.

Watching old Fatty Arbuckle shorts are so weird because they are a solid 100 years old now. EVERYONE IN THIS MOVIE IS DEAD, INCLUDING THAT BABY. Things look so different, too, even compared to silent movies from the 1920s. Look at the way women dress. Look at the cars. It was officially the Olden Days. It's like a window onto another planet.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-26 08:12 am (UTC)(link)
If it was Keaton instead of Arbuckle, I could get more behind this post.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-26 11:47 am (UTC)(link)
Oh YEAH! Buster Keaton is my silent era crush. He was gorgeous - and his films are still so funny!

OP

(Anonymous) 2017-10-26 11:54 am (UTC)(link)
Keaton could look very good sometimes, but booze and stress took a toll pretty early. "Adorkable" has to have been coined for Harold Lloyd and Charles Farrell. Actors from this period whom I think unjustly neglected include Richard Dix, Ricardo Cortez, and Johnny Mack Brown.

In the case of Arbuckle, it's partly the character he presents in his films; partly that he's gotten crossed in my mind with a guy I knew in college. I would like to believe that there is a hell, so that I could send Kenneth Anger there.

But then I think Clark Gable looks like a monkey, and Gary Cooper is plainer than a dirt road and so wooden he's a fire hazard, so obviously I know nothing.

nayrt, Clark Gable is kind of funny looking. But I would agree that the man had loads of charisma that compensate for the unconventional looks.
