He maintains that it was a total coincidence that a born-again Christian friend of his was due to visit the next day.

We didn't get gun control when Sandy Hook Elementary got shot up, so I doubt we're gonna get it now. People will trot out the old "if we outlaw guns only outlaws will have guns" and "the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun" arguments, scream about the second amendment, pointedly ignore the countries for whom sensible gun control laws have been effective at preventing gun violence, the NRA will buy off a few more politicians, people will post "thoughts and prayers" on their Facebooks and Twitters, and nothing will change in the slightest, and then we'll go through the whole goddamn process all over again in two weeks when the next mass shooting occurs. Welcome to America.

NAYRT and I know this is a generalization but

at the core of the thing, I think a lot of people just don't care about solving the problem. Or really, I think a lot of American political discourse doesn't come from a place of actually caring about solving problems. It comes from a commitment to particular emotional narratives and wanting those narratives to be satisfied. So if you see someone yelling about GOOD GUYS WITH GUNS, people are satisfied. It's enormously depressing.

Sad but true, but damnit, I don't want to get to that defeatist mindset. I think continuing to think that way will just allow the NRA and the "RAH RAH SECOND AMENDMENT!" crowd to continue to control the narrative. There needs to be a hard pushback of some sort, not just by politicians, but by the public as well. I don't know how we can make that happen, but it needs to happen. I don't want to just give up and say, "Well, there's nothing we'll be able to do to stop this."

At this point, I would honestly applaud a Democratic candidate coming out and saying, "You know what, you're right. We are going to take guns away. At the very least, we're going to put a whole mess of restrictions on them. You guys have obviously proven you clearly can't be trusted with them, and we're beyond tired of having to deal with this nightmare scenario every few months, so we're going to do x, y, z to deal with this, and if you don't like it, tough."

Sure, that statement would get people very angry, but hey, Trump was able to run on, and win by holding, positions that fly in the face of aspects of the Constitution that people claim they care so much about, so...

I just....there has to be a change. There needs to be. We cannot keep going like this.

I agree that we shouldn't just give up but like... all of the same factors that have made it difficult to change gun laws still exist in more or less the same form. The calculus is still the same, the outcome is still going to be the same. I'm not saying that we should just give up but I'm damned if I can figure out what's going to change any of those factors.

No, yeah, I totally understand that feeling. Was mainly just venting about the despair and how sad it is that we've gotten to that point.

I think if we could AT LEAST get the goddamn NRA to shut the hell up and get out of the way that would be a start on making some kind of movement, but I have no idea how feasible that would be.

Unfortunately, at least going by their press statements, the NRA is functionally a fascist organization at this point, so I'm not optimistic. and I want to be clear that I don't mean this hyperbolically - their language is fascist. Look up the most recent Dana Loesch commercial if you want to see what I'm talking about.

Horrifying. That was pretty close to here. I don't think I know anybody at that church. Ugh, America, stop listening to the NRA. We can do something to stop these shootings. Stop pretending that having other people with guns at the scene who aren't police actually helps.

I wish we licensed guns like we do cars, with written exams, practical tests, required insurance and everything. Plus background checks. Actually I’d really like it if the only guns that were legal without navigating an extra red tape maze on top of licensing and tests and stuff were old style hunting rifles. Including for cops without even more specialized training and testing.
