101. And you did the secret in a Harry Potter font, too. Smart kids, all of yeh.

114. Me. Too. *siiiiigh* It's a subset of domestic!fic where all they do is go about their lives and act normal but it's somehow just so cute!

118. Have you tried punching her in the vagina? That would hurt a lot. Or, go for the solar plexus. That hurts too.

122. 'Cause it's fun. It's the same thing as reading a story where two characters get together, but sometimes in canon this doesn't work out and we, the shippers, would rather see X and Z instead of X and Y and go from there.

Fun stuff. Also, I think this is the handiwork of a troll.

140. The power of Angelina Jolie's voice-acting plus kung fu will do that.

141. NEVER FORGET. NEVER FORGIVE.

147. That's actually a fairly neat idea.

151. Pic semi-related; it's a quirky secret on a depressing background? But no, that doesn't make this reader smile. Depressing secrets just... depress. Funny, that.

122 OP

(Anonymous) 2008-06-23 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not a troll. That is really my opinion of it. Why would you much rather see the other? It's not going to happen, ever. So what's the point?

Re: 122 OP

[identity profile] pavonine.livejournal.com 2008-06-24 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
It's not going to happen? Sir/madam, are you MAD? Of course Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy will grow old together, and Jon Stewart is secretly sleeping with Stephen Colbert! How could you tell me otherwise? HOW?!

I ship canon couples too--Buffy and Spike come to mind, as do Ron and Hermione. Mostly, though, I ship because I like it. It's fun. It makes me happy to imagine two people in a happy relationship, and if they aren't sanctioned by canon I'm not bothered by it. Who said there had to be a point? It's a part of fandom, which in its most general sense is just a way to have fun. Why do people go and read romance novels? They're interested in the characters too; they're shippers at the most basic level. And they like doing it.

I ship because I like shipping. While I most certainly respect your position and with all due respect, you're cruel to try and demean a fun activity.

WAHT?!?!?!?

Re: (NOT THE OP)

[identity profile] pavonine.livejournal.com 2008-06-24 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
It is cruel. Not the secret, that was just a statement. I thought "It's not going to happen, ever." was a bit harsh.

Re: (NOT THE OP)

(Anonymous) 2008-06-24 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Well, it's not. If isn't in canon, and the canon is over....well, it won't ever happen outside the Fan-Fiction realm. It's not in canon. Which to me, means, it will never happen and it's not canon. o_O

Fanon !=Canon

(not the op)

Re: (NOT THE OP)

[identity profile] pavonine.livejournal.com 2008-06-24 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I know canon =/= fanon. I think most shippers who pair up non-canonical couples have a good understanding of their ship's impossibility. It's fun to do anyway. I just wasn't a fan of how the OP stated it.

And as we all learned today, it's perfectly all right to disagree with someone and dislike what they said.

(Anonymous) 2008-06-24 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
A troll? Wow, way to discredit someone's opinion just because you don't agree with it. Hope you don't engage in debates with that kind of logic.

122 OP

(Anonymous) 2008-06-24 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
This is why I kept it a secret. I have friends that take it oh so seriously and they get that kind of offended. O_O

Re: 122

[identity profile] pavonine.livejournal.com 2008-06-24 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
I can't have an opinion, either? Aww. :(

I thought s/he was a troll because secrets of that nature-- short, concise, taking an unpopular stance on a popular aspect of fandom with a sort of blunt dislike--simply sound trollish, done to stir up wank. I'd call troll on a secret that said "I think House is the dumbest show on television." I was wrong, I accept that, good day sir.

Re: 122

[identity profile] galbadia.livejournal.com 2008-06-24 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
What, so every secret that's, like, 100+ words is thereby not the work of a troll? And nobody can simply state a secret that's "blunt"? I guess that means if my secret was that I sometimes drink pop instead of water all the time like I claim, I couldn't say, "I drink Pepsi, even though I say I drink nothing but water." AND I WOULD BE CALLED A TROLL, SHIT.

Good to know. Perhaps they can add this to the rules. "TO ESCAPE BEING A TROLL, MAKE SURE YOU GO ALL TL;DR, BBS. ♥"

I guess my secret should have been TL;DR with hard to read text. XD

[identity profile] galbadia.livejournal.com 2008-06-24 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously! And don't forget, you have to use an artsy or otherwise nice-looking background for maximum effectiveness!

That said... let's review, shall we, class? Requirements: 100 or more words about why you dislike Sawyer/Kate, written on a picture of bee-yoo-tiful sunflower in dark blue 10-point Pointedly Mad font.

If you don't pass these requirements, you are banished to trolldom! >:O

(Anonymous) 2008-06-24 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
And here, I kind of thought people skipped over Teel Deer secrets and skimmed them. XD

[identity profile] galbadia.livejournal.com 2008-06-24 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
That's kind of the impression I was under, too. I know I typically skim them. Personally, I like short and to-the-point secrets. Secrets are like jokes: if you have to explain them, they kind of lose their effectiveness.

Re: 122

[identity profile] pavonine.livejournal.com 2008-06-24 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, you wouldn't be called a troll. Your hypothetical secret doesn't include dislike or intent to insult, and that's not a wanky topic anyway.

I should really clarify my responses better. Shipping is a very popular activity. Almost everyone likes it. Those who don't, don't, and normally these two factions get along nicely.

A secret on F!S pops up. It says, "I think shipping is stupid." Stupid has a negative, harsh connotation and goes against what many people think. By proxy, it calls shippers stupid for engaging in a stupid activity, and who wants to be called stupid? In my personal experience--and please, do forgive silly old me for going from experience--short, declarative, negative statements that go against what most people feel are sometimes said to stir shit up. In this case, I was wrong. Hopefully the OP knows that. I have no problem with non-shippers. I have a problem with people spouting potentially-inflammatory statements in order to get on the nerves of everyone else.

I do hope I made my position and thoughts a little clearer.

[identity profile] galbadia.livejournal.com 2008-06-24 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, but there's where you're wrong. It could be wanky for the health-conscious people I know. :O

A bit, yes; I suppose I can understand that.

Although I must say that even though I have my pairings of choice, I found no offense in the OP's statement; I actually agreed. Rampant shipping doesn't make sense to me, and I do indeed find it rather "stupid". I mean, fans like me who either like canon pairings (some, because there are others that I can't stand) or think of logical reasons why X character would have a good relationship with Y character (wherein "HE SMILED AT HER LOL" and things of that nature really do not count) ... we get kind of pissed when people in our fandom become ship-happy, putting anyone together with anyone else, typically on the basis of little evidence/logic.

But I suppose it all comes down to some people get offended by certain things while others don't. Easy as that, really.

[identity profile] pavonine.livejournal.com 2008-06-24 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
And this is the heart of our disagreement: you interpreted the secret as rampant shipping, and I read it as shipping in general. The one--rampant shipping--is the byproduct of a hyperactive imagination and generally gives shippers a bad name. The other is just regular old pairing two people up for gits and shiggles.

Regular shipping is like animal porn--not for everyone, I guess.

You win. XD Rampant shipping in Fandom explains it perfectly. And yes at the LOL HE SMILED AT HER--two people are together on screen, they must like each other. I don't get shipping (it makes no sense to me), for the most part, but you pinned it down very well.

[identity profile] lanjelin.livejournal.com 2008-06-24 11:20 am (UTC)(link)
Of course, had the OP actually said "rampant shipping"...

Also, some of us ship because of potentially interesting dynamic, not because there are hints in canon. Sometimes there's both, and that's awesome, but generally I like certain personality types together.

[identity profile] galbadia.livejournal.com 2008-06-24 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
lol, everyone who disagrees with you is automatically a troll.

brb trying to figure out that logic

OH WAIT, CAN'T. There is no logic in it! :(
Edited 2008-06-24 00:10 (UTC)

[identity profile] pavonine.livejournal.com 2008-06-24 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, everyone in the whole wide world who has an opinion different than my own. Everyone. I don't see the logic in that, either.

But I didn't say that. brb, taking your words out of my mouth.

[identity profile] galbadia.livejournal.com 2008-06-24 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
But their opinion was clearly different than yours, and you automatically assumed they were a troll.

So of course people are going to automatically look at you as a dickweed who labels everyone with disagreeing opinion as a troll.
Edited 2008-06-24 00:30 (UTC)

[identity profile] pavonine.livejournal.com 2008-06-24 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
So I assumed, and I was wrong. They assumed (assuming they did, anyway), and they are wrong.

We're all wrong, so nobody wins.

101. Oh goodie, you noticed. :3 You're the first. Haha.
