Weird keyboard problems.

[personal profile] cakemage 2017-11-14 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
The "Z" key on my laptop flat-out stopped working a while back. I can't figure out how to fix it, and having to c&p it every time I need the letter is getting really old. I haven't had a whole lot of luck googling the issue, either. Has anyone else had a problem like this before, and if so, how did you deal with it? I'm worried that it's going to need to be professionally repaired, which I really can't afford right now.

You probably got something stuck under it. Unfortunately, laptop keyboards are a bitch to fix once the key itself stops working, so you're better off replacing it.

Repair jobs on laptops really aren't as complicated as you'd think. Drop the model into Google + keyboard (they're usually somewhere between $15 and $30, depending on the laptop), and once it comes in, just search for a teardown of your model. Some laptops, you don't even need to fully take apart to get the keyboard out.

The first thing I did was check underneath and clean it, so that's not the problem. I'll give the Google thing another try, though. Here's hoping! Even a $15 repair would be pretty steep at the moment, and I don't have another computer I could use in the meantime.

Have you popped out the physical key and checked/cleaned under it? If you pop it out, on the keyboard, there should be a soft rubber ring that responds to pressure. Press it with a normal amount of pressure and see if it types the z or not. If so, check the key that you popped off for any issues on the underside then make sure it actually pops back in place. If not, clean the rubber and around it with compressed air and try again. If still not, you may need to fix it. You can do it yourself, it's kind of a pain, but doable, buy a laptop keyboard that fits your laptop (the replacement I got off Amazon cost less than 20 dollars), then follow a youtube tutorial like these ones (https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=replacing+a+laptop+keyboard) to help you, keeping in mind your specific laptop may have more screws in different places.

That was the first thing I did, so that's not the problem. I have a spare keyboard, but I don't really have the desk space to hook it up to my laptop. Gonna try the Google thing again and see if I can't find a solution that won't eat into the $15 I have left to my name.

ayrt

Well, you can actually set up a keyboard shortcut and have that be the z instead of doing the copy/paste thing. Or you can remap your keyboard with something like this https://www.pcmag.com/news/353425/how-to-customize-your-computer-keyboard.

When the key is removed, can you manipulate the switch underneath at all? Or is it completely non-responsive?

It's completely non-responsive. For the first few days of the issue, I'd get a response like, every fifty taps of the key, but then it just completely gave up the ghost. Right in the middle of my work on my short story about alien bees, which is rather inconvenient, as you might imagine.

Oh. I have broken the mechanism between a key and the board before, and stuck a bit of plastic in there to make it work until I replaced the board. But if the break is in the electrical connection below, that's beyond my ability to patch.
