What does it matter if it was planned from the start? Canon changes constantly, especially in a canon like Overwatch that is still being shaped. I am pretty sure Tracer was never planned to be a lesbian but they saw that people were championing for the idea and made it so.

And I would not be surprised at all if the OW team decided to make Reaper76 (or any of the popular ships) canon if they can make it believable. They are very supportive and involved in the fan community.

I would rather there be good writing from something that veered in a different direction that planned than shitty writing that was always planned.

Not saying this is that, just that changing direction isn't bad.

Yes, this! So much this. I think it's a good thing that they're flexible in moving forward, because early on, story/characterization wasn't always good. The character designs were great, there were some beautiful bits of story, but there was also a lot of stuff that just fell apart if you poked it. I like that they're wanting to go back and make some things more character driven and less based on cliches or on a thing looking cool.

"And I would not be surprised at all if the OW team decided to make Reaper76 (or any of the popular ships) canon if they can make it believable."

If Blizzard handles the OW lore the way they've manhandled WoW lore, then I wouldn't hold my breath. That said, if they actually make any of the m/m ships canon I'll eat several hats in utter shock, because the player base is fine with lesbians, but mlm is apparently too gross to be tolerated.

(Which probably means that the most likely m/m will be Roadrat.)

Which can be sweet if handled right. But I'm all for McCree/Hanzo becoming canon. x3

Ugh, no. They have no canon basis for ANYTHING. And it's SO cliche and OVER DONE. And the fandom got ridiculously pushy about it.

NAYRT, I'd be fine with any of the popular m/m ships for Overwatch EXCEPT that one. Besides the unfortunate implications you're hinting at, I've always found the idea of that relationship in particular to be kind of squicky.

A lot of the Reddit fanbase (at least) seems to be fine with some slash pairings. The minority is hateful but the majority is just like, "Whatever."

Blizzard is going to follow the money, and the money in games isn't the edgelord slaktivists who complain about that kind of thing.

That said, Blizzard is second only to Disney in turning out market-triangulation blandness.

None of the current lore was planned from the start, OP. All the R76/First Strike, Pharah being half-Canadian, Blackwatch Genji, the entirety of Moira that basically retcons half the lore (this one got me a little bit pissed, but still). Some of them stem because of popular fandom headcanons that they got pressured into making/changing. And I don't mean to say that it's a bad thing, either.

I mean, look at TF2. That was entirely barren of anything lore/story at first, and then a decade later we actually do have a confirmed father-son relationship that used to be a running joke in the fandom.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-23 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
lmao are you one of the idiots who believes Mercy made Reaper and Blizz TOTES RETCONNED IT by introducing Moira? because literally none of that was ever canon or even implied in canon.

I don't hang around the fandom so I didn't know about this but my Reaper76 shipping-self is happy with that excerpt.

But tbh I wouldn't be surprised if some of their story-stuff was planned differently in the beginning and they've changed things up from fan reaction or backlash, I can't say it bugs me though as I'm really not a stickler for the lore with this game.

I mean this is from the same company that makes WoW and holy shit some of the stuff they've done now for the lore is not at all what it was like before.

The thing that stuck out to me the most was that he says Reaper was kind of relieved that S76 was made Strike-Commander over him. I call pure bullshit on that. Reaper always came off to me as bitter that he was passed over.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-16 12:41 pm (UTC)(link)
A friend of mine pointed out that he wouldn't be, because as the Strike-Commander every decision he made would be scrutinized to hell and back and there'd be a ton of responsibility where he wouldn't be able to do things His Way. S76 in that position, though, freed him up.

Tbh, that whole statement sounds like it's NOT what the fandom thinks it's gonna be. But that's just me.
