I sort of agree when it comes to the movies specifically. I will forgive shoddy effects in most anything, after growing up with Blake's 7 and its absolute shoestring 70s budget I'm well trained not to let that bother me, but I still get disappointed when the really gorgeous looking SF movies turn out to have little to no substance to them.
