A common framework in fan shipping is to take a canon friendship and build romance in, because it’s often easier than taking a canon “romance” and building friendship in. (A lot of F/F shippers go this route—not “these two must obviously want to bang,” but “these two are really fun together, so we might as well have them bang.”)

That's exactly why I've shipped pairings like the kind mentioned in the secret. Best friends are my favorite thing to ship, and if a gay character happens to have a best friend of the opposite sex, there's at least a somewhat decent chance I'll ship them, because that's my favorite kind of dynamic to ship.
