So for years I've avoided Reddit because I've heard how it's the Wankiest Place on Earth. I've recently gotten into it through a friend, and... it's not, really? There've been some people I felt were a little mean, but not any more so most places on the internet.

Did something change, or am I just missing the evil parts? OR am I a sweet summer child and in for a shock when I dig really deep?

Reddit is basically like...a tiny version of the internet. So, how bad it is depends on where you go.

There are def evil parts, but like with Tumblr you have to either go looking for them, or be pretty unlucky, to stumble across nasty stuff on the default subs.

It's not all bad either. Plenty of wholesome and positive subs. Depends on what you subscribe to, and that's up to you.

I avoided it for a long time, too, but now I casually follow a few subs. I think there are just such a variety of communities you can follow that have their own culture. I haven't run across ones that came across as too toxic, that I didn't immediately unsubscribe from.

I think a lot of it is pretty male dominated so I've seen a lot of wank about the "myth of the gender wage gap" and there do seem to be groups of haters that come out whenever certain topics pop up that just flood the thread, but yeah. For the most part, what I follow is all fairly civil and pretty "liberal".

Not had much luck in the anime groups though. Definitely felt dominated by high school boys (or girls, depending on the anime), which is for the most part not the demographic I care to socialize much with. Ah well, that's the nature of it, I guess.

It depends on what subs you frequent, really. Avoid the obvious cesspools and you'll avoid the worst of it. But I'm not going to kid you, reddit skews make and asshole, so you should expect that to crop up in popular subs that appeal to both genders. Nasty comments do get smacked down but maybe not as hard as they should.

Me too! I find myself following a dozen or so subreddits, and with the exception of one smeg on the r/Stranger Things, the discussions have been fun.

Depends on where you go and how good moderation is.

I wouldn't go on r/incels or r/redpill and even r/movies has it's stupidity but it's okay provided you don't really interact with people.

I don't care for it, so I don't use it a lot. I think it's probably not as bad as some people make it out to be. That said, the sense that I get is that it's basically founded on the relatively traditional, core, male-nerdy-internet style of interacting. Which isn't necessarily bad, but it's not something that I necessarily care for, and it seems pretty pervasive there.

It's like any other website tbh, it's got it's perfectly fine bits and it's bugfuck insane bits. I only ever frequent a few reddit pages and I've never seen anything that bad.

There are wonderful corners of reddit, but it has corners of horrendous awfulness. And then there’s its dominant culture, which trends towards deep seated casual racism and misogyny.

I don't think Republicans understand just how much the American public in general (not every person, but many) hate them at present. They're the bullies who got into power and are trying to shove all their own pork products through into law, to please their moneyed masters. They're the hypocrites who talk about protecting the children then turn a blind eye to child molesters if it's one of theirs. They love gerrymandering if it's in their favor. Of course a vote from the "inner city" shouldn't count as much as a "land owner's in Texas." They code-talk about racism that doesn't fool most people anymore. Their fake "trickle down" policies never worked and most people aren't buying it anymore. They're not pro-life when they're anti woman and anti baby in every single possible way aside from banning abortions.

In short, with the current power they're trying to do as much evil as they can in the short amount of time left to them, fucking the public and saying to hell with all of you: we've got ours. The level of corruption and evil is obscene. To many people right now, they're just evil.

I don't think they'll ever have this kind of power again. They've done it to themselves. I think the party will be dying out within my lifetime. And good fucking riddance.

Now, this doesn't mean I think the Democrats are all fucking saints. The two party dichotomy of having to pick one party as evil and the other automatically being good has done a real number on America. Unless there is serious form at ALL levels you can expect to see massive levels of revolt and breakdown in society.

It's already starting. Maybe tptb don't care as long as they have the police force to bully their will onto the people, and the wealthy think they can shield themselves from the repercussions of their greed and evil even while people are dying, but I don't think that can go on forever. Every oppressive empire will be taken down from the inside if it won't reform its ways.

And the more they try to outlaw peaceful change, the more likely it is that people will either revolt in small ways or that a powderkeg point will eventually be reached. They've forgotten that America was based on rebellion. That means a stubborn bunch of people who always think they know best and sometimes shoot themselves in the foot with their rebellion...against literally anything. But there comes a point when the government should really not want that aimed at them, from all levels of society, across all the divides.

When the people can legitimately say, holy shit this government is evil, it doesn't represent the people, and there's no legitimacy to it...things start to break down at every level. And yes, I think that's where we're at already.

The wealthy don't care. They're sitting pretty, talking about the economy and Wall Street like it's the entire country and all that matters. The politicians ... well, you know what they're doing. But the people who are more marginalized and traumatized every single day by the lack of say in their own lives, oppressive laws and taxes and bosses and rules that very, very clearly are only for the little people, and bending over every day to let capitalism unleashed have its dirty way with them...I think this country is nearing the end of what people can and will endure.

And I don't know when the powderkeg moment will come, or what it will be. I think many of the population are holding out hope things will improve after a round of elections.

All I have to say is that the government had better fucking hope so. I've lost so much respect for my country at every single level.

And yeah, I'm one of those people who always wanted to do the right thing with taxes. I've always said, I don't mind paying my share, I'll do my best. I'm at the point now where I'm thinking of how I can work under the table and stop giving them their greedy, bloated, fucking share to hand over to the corporations who are fucking me over too. If I'm thinking along that lines, then what are people even less disposed to trust and like the government doing?

I support nonviolent change or revolution. I just feel the window for it happening is beginning to narrow.
