Sounds like you made the right choice. I cannot imagine getting that level of anxiety from tumblr (and leaving my house for any reason makes me anxious, so...) but then I don't really do fandom there. I just look at pretty photos.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-05 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
i mean, go on whatever sites you want (or don't), but complaints like this about tumblr specifically come across as really weird to me, since it's essentially the perfect site to create a total echochamber where you see absolutely nothing but what you want, only from people who agree with you on things 100% (blocking whenever they don't). your dash only includes people you follow, and that blacklist add-on is pretty thorough, so...

(Anonymous) 2017-12-06 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
The only way I could turn my dash into a "total echochamber" where I never saw any posts that bothered me ever would be by following a grand total of zero people.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-06 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
i mean, unless you're only into abnormally awful (or incredibly small) fandoms, it kind of seems like you just don't know how to find the right people to follow, honestly?

Not sure about the OP but sometimes stuff comes up on my dash because someone is having an argument about it, and I agree with the actual person I'm following but I really don't want to watch the argument happen.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-06 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
Even if someone who's reasonable is only reposting something vile to rebut it, it still means the vile thing is popping up on my dash, possibly frequently if it's a big argument.

Exactly!

DA

I find I can "do tumblr" if I only following those kind of blogs that ONLY post gifsets and art of some specific fandom. But any time I try and follow *people*... nope. Not unless J make liberal use of Tumblr Savior, and I'd you're blocking 75% of what a person posts, what's the point?

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2017-12-06 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
Tumblr savior seemed to be chronically broken when I was trying to use it over a year ago, and since the tumblr's api is also unsupported and broken, you can't really develop the same kinds of filter tools that you can for twitter.

Or avoid tagging your posts on any subject where people actively search tags looking for targets.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-06 06:18 am (UTC)(link)
So... pretty much every subject? Lol.

This is pretty much how I feel (and how my Tumblr is).

(Anonymous) 2017-12-06 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
Tumblr has this great thing going on where even though I might have someone blocked, it still recommends posts to me by them. But go off, I guess.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-06 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
A website can have a fandom now?

(Anonymous) 2017-12-06 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
You've clearly never seen any of the Facebook/Tumblr fanfic.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-06 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
I can tell I've been doing too much post-NaNoWriMo editing because the first thing I noticed was the run-on sentence.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-06 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
I'm glad you made the personally healthy choice! :)

Sometimes I have to re-evaluate the time I spend there, or who I follow. So far I haven't quit for good.

I do think it's what you make of it. But so are many things. And the ability to keep scrolling forever is really bad for my self-discipline.

Plus personally I get too easily sucked into things that upset me (anything political especially). I don't necessarily follow mainly political blogs so that wouldn't be easy to quit.

I can totally understand how any site could cause you anxiety and stress, based on repeated experiences there. For you, cutting it completely was the right choice.

(I made a similar choice about Facebook for different reasons long ago, haven't regretted it.)

Honestly, fandom secrets is the first place I've witnessed wank, arguments, and drama. I visit tumblr and reddit every day so it's weird hearing so many complaints about the two.

You should do what's best for you.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-06 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
Every time there's a secret or a comment about how someone has had a bad experience on tumblr (or wherever), there's always people that feel the need to comment about how that's not their experience and often with the implication that the person who had the bad experience must be doing something wrong. Like they cannot fathom how others could have a different experience, even though they are probably into different things and are following different people.

Re: You should do what's best for you.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-06 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
Well, not everyone knows all the features available to them for avoiding wank on Tumblr. I mean, I'm in Supernatural fandom and my dash is blissfully wank-free because I'm choosy about who I follow and I make judicious use of Tumblr Savior.

Re: You should do what's best for you.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-06 03:25 pm (UTC)(link)
AYRT: I find it off-putting when commenters accuse people of doing something wrong when they say they had a bad experience on Tumblr.

You: Okay, but have you considered you're doing something wrong?

Re: You should do what's best for you.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-07 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
Me: Okay, but have you considered there might be information you don't have that could solve your problem and people are trying to help?

Re: You should do what's best for you.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-07 02:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm going to try and help you by telling you that what you're doing doesn't come across as helpful at all. It comes across as condescending and dismissive.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-06 01:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Erm... somehow I don't think tumblr is your problem. Might want to think bout that op.
