I pulled a ligament in my lower back about 3 years ago from a hard fall. The pain is something I'll be dealing with for the rest of my life, but there are steps I take every day to make sure I have long-term support and/or it doesn't become as bad as it has the potential to:

-Pilates to keep my core and butt strong
-Yoga every day in the morning, before bed, and any time in between as needed.
-Never stay seated or in the same position for too long, especially since I have a bit of an anterior pelvic tilt.

When I'm in pain, I do what I can:
-Hot bath or shower, lay on electric heated blanket, place my hot waterbottle-bunny under where my back curves and have pillows placed where needed.
-I take Toredol for extreme pain.

I have been in extreme pain all week. I can't take Toredol every day because it can eat my stomach. Anything weaker than Toredol is basically candy, and stuff like A535 or Bengay isn't very effective.

Does anyone have any tips for lower back pain?

heating pad. It has been a life saver for me. If the pain is really bad, I'll use two so I get every area. Hot baths are great for back pain too (although showers might be better if the pain makes it hard to get in and out of the tub).

Honestly physical therapy is the thing that helped me the most.

Right now, I'm doing my workout in the pool because it is easier on my lower back and hips.

I think finding the right sleep position for you is super important. I've been told that you should never sleep on your stomach, but it turns out that because of my scoliosis and hip issues, that is actually the best position for me to sleep in. I've had a lot less morning pain since I've been allowing myself to sleep the way that is most comfortable.

Be careful about how you get in and out of things. Don't sit up from your bed without first rolling on your side and moving your legs off the bed.

Sometimes if I can't take pain meds, and I have the free time, honestly I'll take benadryl and knock myself out for a few hours.

Well, my pain is mostly from nerve damage so I don't have too much useful advice, I'd think, but I do also get hurt at work a lot.

Different topical analgesics do different things. There's a bunch of different formulations. (I use a Lidocaine cream for really bad days, it's literally the only painkiller I've found that works for my nerve damage. Everything else, even hard shit like morphine, doesn't touch it at all.) If you can afford it, I would recommend buying a few different types with different active drugs and experimenting with them. You might stumble across something that actually works. And even if you don't find something great, a little bit of relief can go a long way.

I guess the other thing would be to make sure you're not sitting or standing too much. Even if you've got a million pillows to help support it, sitting can really be hell on your back. Even if you feel like you aren't using those back muscles, you are. I've hurt my back badly enough a few times that I had to go lie down for a while every few hours because just being upright was fucking me up too much.

when I've thrown my back out (usually the lower back), at the point when heat, changing sitting/lying position, and ibuprofin stops working, my next step is targeted back stretches. Googled "stretches for back pain" and found the right set for the particular area.

like, you'd think that doing yoga and core exercise would be good enough but a nurse friend of mine pointed out that a stretch has to be targeted to the muscle and muscle group surrounding it.

Try ice rather than heat. If you have some inflammation going on, it'll help bring that down, which will make you feel better sooner.
