I feel guilty whenever I don't ship a black character, especially if I have a white ship instead in the same fandom. I always feel like I need to bring out all the ships with black characters I do absolutely OTP.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-14 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know this character, but that's a really silly thing to feel guilty about.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-14 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
That sounds prejudice as fuck. If you feel guilty that you don't like a character that is a different race, gender, whatever maybe it's time to reexamine your feelings about race, gender or whatever. You should dislike a character or a person for that matter on who they are and not the color of their skin.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-14 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, yeah.

I mean, if you have a habit of never, ever liking any black characters in fiction, that's pretty racist and you probably need to examine that. If you feel an obligation to love all black characters, no matter what, simply because they're black... That's a lot less negative, but it's not much better, either.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-14 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
I am not op, but I don't think they need to examine very hard to figure out why they feel like this. It's almost certainly because of people who accuse everyone of racism if they don't have an equal number of favorite characters who are black and who are white. Especially if op is in a big slash fandom and gets to hear about how people whose fave ships involve white dudes are extra racist for "being all about the whitecock" and considering black characters "unworthy" of slashing. Those people are all over the place. I've seen a few of 'em around here at times too.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-14 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, but if you're fully aware that it's not about race for you because there are many black characters/ships you genuinely do like, and you have rational reasons for disliking them in the first place, it shouldn't actually bother you at all.

For example: After I watched Jessica Jones, someone got on my case for disliking Jessica/Luke, so I, y'know, simply explained why I disliked it, and... they understood me. They moved on. It wasn't a big deal.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-14 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
DA

Yep, that sounds like fandom. You explain your reasons, and people understand and let it go and move on.

ROFL

(Anonymous) 2017-12-14 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
So ignore the assholes and move on yourself, jeez.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-14 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
cool but not everyone is in fandom for the purpose of obsessively dissecting their attitudes towards the sexualization/desexualization of various minority groups. Some people are just there for the shallow reasons of imagining hot people fucking, or naked, or whatever, without tons of meta. Sure, it's good to analyze our reactions and check our potential biases, but maybe some people don't want to think that hard about their porn, specifically, fanmade or not. But they still get to hear everyone throw fits about how racist they must be for not shipping X character enough, and tbh I've seen enough people insist that there's literally NO reason you wouldn't have an equal number of black faves/ships as white EXCEPT that you're a gross racist to see where someone might feel guilty about it even if they know intellectually that there's no damn race issues involved with their preferences.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-14 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
So why exactly are you letting those people impact your enjoyment, then? If they're being irrational, and won't listen to reason, then just block them. They're especially not worth changing your entire perspective to the point where you feel guilty over not liking one black character.

It's the same with female characters, which would make more sense if the representation was evenly spread; but considering a ton of properties are written by white dudes to star white dudes with like, one female character and one male poc (both of which often are thinly sketched background to aforementioned white dudes); I think it's kinda backwards to rag on fans for often preferring *gasp* the white dudes. Not everyone wants to work to find the moments of resistance or whatever, they just wanna read fic.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-14 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think being 'colorblind' is really possible, and in this day and age which race being talked about so much, it's easy to see why someone can feel guilty for not liking a POC actor whereas they may have never even thought about race in a pre-BLM world.

Sometimes you just don't jive with a character, nothing wrong with that.

I'd only find it weird if there was a pattern of never liking black characters no matter how they were written, but if it's a similar type of character that's putting you off then it's the archetype, not the ethnicity, that's the cause.

Tbf, Benton was a dick. But I still sorta liked him and Carter's mentorship/friendship?

(Anonymous) 2017-12-14 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
Man, I used to really dislike Benton. But then I rewatched some episodes, especially from the latter seasons where he did a cameo, and I ended up shipping him and Carter hard. I need to rewatch the whole thing and see if I like him more now since I know where he ends up. But, yes, their relationship in the show is great.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-14 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't feel guilty because it's fiction.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-14 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
Nothing wrong with disliking characters, no matter their skin color. As long as your not disliking them BECAUSE of their skin color...

You can dislike a character for their behavior.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-14 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
If they're obnoxious or irritating or self-righteous or whatever. Disliking someone for the annoying ways they choose to behave is perfectly legitimate. I get how it can make you feel guilty, though. Because sometimes there's so few black characters, disliking one seems like a really big deal. There are so many straight, white male characters in American media, you can dislike half of them and it's no big thing because there will still be hundreds that you do like. That is just not true for characters of other races, genders, and orientations.

Re: You can dislike a character for their behavior.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-14 11:18 am (UTC)(link)
This. (And funnily enough, for all the gatekeeping and policing others; if you criticise a white dude, you'll still get way more flak, even on tumblr etc. than if you criticise a poc/female character that everyone claims to be so protective of.)

Don't hate the actor, hate the scriptwriter for giving them horrible characters. It's not really a race thing if the scriptwriter makes insufferable characters.

Disliking a specific black character doesn't make you racist by itself. If you almost always end up disliking the black character in whatever shows you watch, yeah, maybe then you need to take a look at yourself and examine your prejudices. But an occasional character in an occasional show? Not a big deal. Some characters just bug you.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-14 07:31 am (UTC)(link)
Disliking a character for their personality and actions the same as you would whatever their race was is called equality. Embrace it.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-14 07:55 am (UTC)(link)
This is such a white thing to say: "I have to like him just because he's black". Do you interact with people of other races at all? Jesus.

So, op...
