I thought Felicia Day was fun on Supernatural so I'm always confused by how much people hate her.

Crazy, right? It's as if she has a whole life and career outside of her role on Supernatural that people might have opinions about.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-01 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
OK.

What are the things that she did in her life and career outside Supernatural that led people to hate her?

I assume it was something really heinous, right?

(Anonymous) 2018-01-01 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
If only.

/shrug Dunno. I have no such strong feelings about her myself. But I know that since she's done a lot of things besides Supernatural, that leaves a lot of room for people to develop opinions both negative and positive about her, so I'm not "surprised" that everyone isn't judging her on a single role. I also know that you don't have to do anything particularly heinous to earn fandom's poor opinion. Are you new to fandom, maybe? If so, that's just how the cookie crumbles sometimes.

Sure, fandom having poor opinions about things isn't exactly surprising. But at times, the hatred for Day goes way beyond anything that's expected or proportionate or that can be described as just typical fandom stuff. It's really personal.

And even then, I don't think it's especially mysterious why she gets that kind of hate from some people. But I also don't think we should just shrug our shoulders and say, oh, well, some nerds despise her because she's a woman who plays video games, and that's just how it is and we have to accept that.

Funny thing, I kind of liked her UNTIL Supernatural. Hers is the only female character I actively wanted to be put on a bus forever (Put on a bus, not killed. I hated that they killed her because I know she has fans, and It was a really badly written death). Now, she grates me a lot because I feel all her characters are the exact same brand of excitable dream manic pixie girl. Of course, that's not her fault, and I'm sure she's a wonderful person. I just want her to find acting jobs in series that I am not a fan of.

What do you actually mean by "manic pixie dream girl" here? Like, isn't her character in Supernatural gay?

(Anonymous) 2018-01-02 05:19 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT

Yeah, Charlie was gay BUT she was the perfect little sister for both Sam and Dean, who, at that point, had shown to be wary of everyone new who came to help them after the mess that was the apocalypse. Yet she´s accepted practically immediately, and every time afterwards she appeared up until her death, it was to remind them of how awesome adventurous hunting was, because for her it was so perfect. So... platonic manic pixie dream girl? There was also the fact that every female she met seemed to automatically fall in love with her. Again, I have nothing against her, but Charlie in general grated me.

I definitely don't think I'd call her characters "manic pixie dream girls" but I do agree that they all tend to be... just slight variations of Felicia Day. aka, nerdy and awkward and adorable. Actually, the first thing I saw her in was Dr. Horrible, and that was the only time I didn't think she was that sort of character, but Penny was about as interesting as a poorly acted piece of wood.

I still think she's awesome as a person though, and I like her irl when she's just being herself.
