I love MST3K. It's the only piece of pop culture that ~means something~ to me.

I can't stand Felicia Day. Her acting is OK but the semi-ditzy, semi-oblivious "twee geek" persona she markets herself with really grates me.

I think all of the other casting for the new series is fantastic, but Felicia as a Mad just feels incredibly pandering (and I think her bits outside the theater are mostly cringe-inducing, but that might be the writing).

It also feels like an extra slap in the face to Mary Jo Pehl, who was brought on to the writing team, and then as a Mad, because she was killing it in local stand-up. Not because she was already geek fap material.

S!B: I'm a committed and outspoken feminist and Felicia Day gets a lot of ~ethics in game journalism~ related hate, and that is completely unrelated to my beef. But still, optics.

When Felicia Day was cast, I felt she was a super obvious choice and not one that I necessarily agreed with. I've nothing against her personally, but I do think she's slightly overrated. I wish the people who cast "geek girl" parts didn't see her as their go-to actress.

I used to like her a lot. When she first started she was cool. But it seems like she has fallen into a "gamer girl" stereotype that I can't stand. I am a real gamer and people like her make it harder for us to be taken seriously.

I admit that sometimes find her a bit annoying, but it's completely absurd to blame "people like her" for female gamers/nerds not being taken seriously. Female gamers are treated like shit because male gamers are sexist assholes, not because some individual female gamers are too twee or whatever.

I also have to point out that this doesn't feel like legitimate criticism and sounds more like a you thing than a her thing. I can get not liking her persona or finding her acting bad or thinking she's a bit annoying. But the fact that you don't consider her a "real gamer" IS the problem here, and it's coming from you, not her. I mean, she used to have a massive WoW addiction and was unemployed for it, for goodness sake. And what do you mean about her being thin, pretty, and white making her a bad role model, or her being "unaware" that not all gamer girls are like that? When did she claim that? I mean, hell, her series The Guild was crazy at the time for portraying such a variety of people - races, body types, ages, and an even female/male split - as gamers.

Again, if you don't like her, you don't like her, but frankly I think she's been awesome for proving that female gamers exist, and her personality is, if anything, a stark contrast from the stereotypical "gamer girl" (or dreaded "fake gamer girl") and it's awesome that she's so active in nerd communities. And I say this while also thinking she's a pretty weak actor and writer both.

I agree, but I don't know that Day herself is the issue. Her character feels very much like she's being written to be twee and obnoxious and trying to fill shoes way too big for her.

Or my brain is justifying the cringe by saying it must be on purpose. *shrug* I was just happy to see MJP back in form and I can always dream of the day she takes the reigns back.

I don't feel that way. My only complaint about her is she says EVERY movie is "nightmare fuel". If you say that every ep it loses all meaning.

I thought Felicia Day was fun on Supernatural so I'm always confused by how much people hate her.

Crazy, right? It's as if she has a whole life and career outside of her role on Supernatural that people might have opinions about.

Funny thing, I kind of liked her UNTIL Supernatural. Hers is the only female character I actively wanted to be put on a bus forever (Put on a bus, not killed. I hated that they killed her because I know she has fans, and It was a really badly written death). Now, she grates me a lot because I feel all her characters are the exact same brand of excitable dream manic pixie girl. Of course, that's not her fault, and I'm sure she's a wonderful person. I just want her to find acting jobs in series that I am not a fan of.

I didn't know Felicia Day was in the new MST3K. That seems like a really bad casting choice, but idk, I wasn't super attached to any of the characters besides the robots.

I try not to hate on Felicia Day too much because I think people's gripes with her tend to be disproportionate to anything she's actually done "wrong".

But good lord do I find her incredibly irritating. I didn't even know who she was before her "cameo" in the DA2 DLC, and that cemented her as "smug-face annoying voice lady". And then I found out she was some sort of gaming celebrity that they'd dropped into the game bc... people think she's cute? The whole thing was just weird and badly done. Nothing else I've seen from her has changed my initial first impressions, either.

Before SPN, she had a recurring role in S7 of Buffy (and did fine) and was in a fun web series called The Guild.

This, basically. I'd never heard of her before that cameo and I couldn't stand the character so that and the reason why she was in it in the first placs possibly coloured my opinion of her in that moment but other than that, I'm very indifferent about her.

Mark of the assassin was not any good way to get to know Ms Day, I agree. It's a bad start that's hard to overcome.

Try, if it's not too late, to get to know her as Veronica from Fallout New Vagas, or Codex from the Guild?

The 2017 revival was Kickstarter funded so some level of pandering is to be expected.

So like. I agree that casting her seemed like pandering, and I think it was indicative of one of the problems with the new series - even though I liked it a lot overall, they were clearly very aware of, and playing to, the show's status as a nerd shibboleth.

But I wish you didn't have to frame it around Day being nothing more than "fap material". Because I don't think it's true, and you don't even really need to mention to explain why it was pandering. It's not pandering because Felicia Day is "fap material", it's pandering because Felicia Day was popular. It's really reductive and shitty to frame it that way.
