What is something that people often buy or do to show off...

(Anonymous) 2018-01-10 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
That doesn't impress you at all?

People doing dangerous stuff. I've been the mom friend my whole life and I don't have time for stupid people.

Cars. I know nothing about cars and don't care about them. A car is just a tool for me to get places.

Agreed on both. Most "sexy cars" look ugly to me. I just appreciate them more if they are more eco-friendly, or look like they can drive through snow/icy roads without slipping all over the place.

Sort of on people doing dangerous stuff, people bragging about how drunk they got, or how little they slept the night before. Weirdest stuff to brag about, but so many people do it.

Echoing all of this. I like your "A car is just a tool for me to get places" line-my family's had a history of owning cars that behaved all wonky and were old and beat up and whatnot, so at this point, I figure as long as a car runs okay and its doors and windows close/work properly, that's good enough for me :p.

Home redecorating.

I get why it's exciting for the person, but I really don't care that you got new carpet.

Fancy purses. A coworker who is deep in debt was bragging about her $2k designer purse that was just a brown leather bag. Boring!

Yup. I don't get it. I especially don't get tiny purses you can't even put anything in. What's the point of that? A purse is for carrying things.

Diamonds. Well, gems in general. But especially diamonds. I don't even like the way they look. Pearls, now pearls look nice.

Huge houses. Expensive cars. Who needs something bigger than you have a use for?

Re: What is something that people often buy or do to show off...

(Anonymous) 2018-01-10 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
I wonder the same thing too. Why spend all that money on something that's just going to go to waste? I'd much rather have a small house that cost less but where I actually used all of the space in it.

I'm same regarding gemstones. If I have to go for a stone, I'd rather ruby or amethyst or opal over diamond (black opals... omg). I recently got myself a pair of blue pearl earrings in Hawaii that I'd been eyeing for nigh on 15 years, and I'm so pleased with them.

Watches.

It's just a watch, and chances are if it's a fancy one I won't be able to tell anyway.

Also cars.

Cars go straight past "not impressed" to "actually repelled" for me when people act like they sincerely believe I should give a shit what they're driving. See also gun collectors and people who brag about how drunk they get.

Shoes. I just don't care about them as fashion accessories, and I think steep heels are silly and impractical.

Jewelry, specifically as a sign of affection. You know, like "My husband loves me sooooo much, look at this rock he got me for our anniversary!" This is mostly because my sister and my niece use my mom to bankroll expensive jewelry because "we want something with memories that'll last!" It's disgusting that they take advantage of her insecurity just because she has money, and the worst part is Mom KNOWS they're using her.

So. uh. Yeah. Jewelry.

iPhones, especially if they brag about which version they have.

Nothing.

If someone is trying to show off, I'm pretty much automatically unimpressed.

If you bought a non-cuboid computer case with more than a half-dozen LEDs, you're overcompensating with your paycheck.

(Exceptions for makers who actually design and cut their own cases.)

Anything that puts them into massive debt for no good reason other than to show off.

Seriously, if you want that $700 pair of Manolos because they match your Jag XJL and you can afford both those things, then go for it. You can't take it with you and you're not leaving it to me, so spend your money on what makes you happy. But going into debt over shit you don't need? That don't impress me much.

People who all but brag about their lack of sympathy for another person in a bad situation. Even if the person was a complete idiot and did it to themselves.

Tying in to the above, people who get off on putting others in their place. Yes, yes, we get you are so much better than and smarter than and morally superior to everyone else.

Another vote for cars. I'm impressed by fuel efficiency and good handling in snow, but I don't care about the make or model or how much it cost, what color it is, how many horsepower, how big it is, or any of that. Showing me your car or telling me about your car is so awkward because I feel nothing have to pretend to care.
