Is this Leah Remini?
raspberryrain: (braids)

Yes.

[personal profile] raspberryrain 2018-01-14 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, she has Jewish ancestors.

Re: Yes.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-15 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
According to Wiki, her mother is a Jewish, which makes her Jewish, but she was raised Catholic and Scientologist so obviously she doesn't see herself as Jewish at all. I don't understand this secret.

I think - in general - it's not really great to present a particular reasonable interpretation of your religion as normative and universal, and that holds just as true for Judaism as for any other religion. And I don't have any time for anyone saying that a person is obligated to join a religion because she "belongs" to them.

That's all I have to say about that. I hope Leah does Leah.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-14 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
She's not obligated to do anything. She's a Jew whether she likes it or not. I'm just hoping that if she's looking for a new spiritual path, she's willing to explore one that she's already grandfathered in for.

"Belongs to you"?

(Anonymous) 2018-01-14 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Tribal and religious law. Her mother's Jewish, that makes her Jewish. Nothing she can do will make her stop being Jewish. Aside from the fact that it's an ethnicity, we don't recognize conversion. We just think whoever converted is a dumbass Jew who's kidding themselves.

In other words, she could be the worst Jew ever and she'd still be a Jew, by Jewish standards. May as well try out the life.

Also, "belongs to us" gives me skeevies

(Anonymous) 2018-01-14 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's right up there with the Mormons and their posthumous baptisms.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-14 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree. Op's further comments only make it worse. They seem like someone who cares only about 'claiming' people for their group , whether those people like it or not. Which honestly is disgusting no matter why you do it.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-14 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously. It's kind of creepy.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-15 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, let's weigh it against the negative sense. How many times has a story broken about someone with a vaguely Jewish-sounding name being terrible? I don't know about you, but my first thought generally is, "not one of us, please not one of us." Because as history shows, they tend to blame us all for the actions of one. Do you know how much shit that filthy fucker Weinstein has unleashed upon us? There's a reason the phrase "shanda fur die goyim" exists.

So yes, I will offset the rotten apples by claiming good Jews where I find them, religiously observant or not. That's why I have no problem saying Einstein was one of ours, Salk was one of ours, and Leah Remini is one of ours. Whatever reminds people that we often kick ass, not poison the village well.

Dude , you're talking about satlying that someone who just left an abusive cult ought to follow your religion because they "belong to you" ...maybe think about how fucked up and painfully inconsiderate that is.

Where did I make a demand on her? I just said I wish she'd explore the ethnicity/religion she was born into, *if* she is so inclined to seek a new major belief system. I never said she "ought" to do anything.

I had assumed she came from a Catholic background because there's a shot in one episode where she's lighting a candle in a church. Never looked her up on Wikipedia or anything, though.

I think maybe her father was raised Catholic.

Well, I knew about nothing about Jewish people except some short mentions of things in history books and having some distant relatives who married into a family with even more distant relatives that are Jewish, so this was an interesting look into some of their mindsets, lol.

Kind of interesting how it's actually very similiar with being Asian (which I am), too. As long as you don't marry another ethnicity beyond two generations or so, even if you're born and raised in another country, Chinese/Korean/whatever else will claim you as "theirs". And it absolutely matters which country your ancestors actually come from too.

Humans are weird.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-15 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
Whatever religion your ancestors were=/=your religion or obligation to said religion. Any religion.

Stop that.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-15 06:56 am (UTC)(link)
Uh, stop secretly wishing someone would explore something that would make me happy? Which might be the reason I would put it in a Secret on a Secrets board?

Oh wait, I forgot the part where I went out into the streets and started yelling What I Think Everyone Should Do Ever through a megaphone.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-15 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, this secret is one of the most Jewish things I've ever read. I feel you.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-15 05:56 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe she's trying to reconnect with both Catholicism AND Judaism but it's the Catholic bit that ends up being more visible?

Maybe her husband is Christian and she leans that way because of him?

Maybe wearing a cross is a ploy to garner sympathy from the widest segment of the American viewing public and emphasize that Scientology is not a sect of Christianity and does not allow room for other religious beliefs?

(Anonymous) 2018-01-15 06:29 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah... All I can think of while reading the secret and some of the comments is a particularly creepy rendition of "One of us, one of us. Gooba-gobble, gooba-gobble".
