I like that song.

I liked that song.

I thought a punchline was that EGO doesn't really understand human poetics.

"You're so vain, you probably think this song is about you."

Alls I know is, when Russell started spoken-wording that mess I mentally fist-pumped and said "I knew he was channeling Shatner!"

I was getting more of a Bill Murray vibe myself.

that song always reminds me of my sister's wedding because a bunch of my BIL's friends sang it with different lyrics (including her name, bc her name isn't Brandy) at the wedding.
P.S. they're divorced now but for reasons that have nothing to do with his friends

I do feel like it's kind of a weird song to sing at a wedding

it is, isn't it?

At my cousin’s wedding, her sisters did a dance to “I’m only going to break your heart”

I haaaaaated that scene. The song isn't my fave and that didn't help but the real problem was that whoever wrote the script didn't trust their audience to get the connection so they kept shoving it in our face. Ego quoting the lyrics was just... arrghhh.

So I finally got around to watching Guardians 2 on Netflix, and I thought the whole thing was pretty cringey. And I liked the first one! The only thing I enjoyed was Groot - which is notable because I was the only person in the world who didn't like him in the first one. But anyway, I hated the Ego plot, the weird 80s aesthetic, absolutely everything. Even the emotional bits felt really hammy to me. Disappointed..

I felt the same way, anon. Enjoyed the first movie, was psyched about the second and... boy, what a letdown.

I've hated the song since the movie.

I didn't watch Guardians 2 yet but the truth is there are a lot of musical choices in the first movie that don't do much for me. I guess it's "70s nostalgia" but I really have no nostalgia for the fucking Piña Colada Song. (Yes I know that is not the actual title.) But at least no one quoted the lyrics.

I never liked that pina colada song either.

It was my own lovely lady, and she said, "Oh, it´s you"
And we laughed for a moment, and I said, "I guess we're through.

We both like cheating on spouses and getting caught in our lies.
Being bored with each other is the only surprise.
Seems like making love with strangers was a move we'd both make.
When it comes to commitment, we have made a mistake."

have always hated that song because the lyrics aren't romantic or funny, they're about two losers trying to cheat on each other and being okay with that when they both catch each other and that's just -

well its stupid. Catchy music, stupid lyrics and I can never forgive stupid lyrics. Worse yet is how so many people seem to think its a romantic song. Kind of like Sting's stalker song.

Honestly, I cringed when Ego broke it down, and I LIKE the song.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-19 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
I've always liked that song, and I liked its use in the movie! But when Kurt Russell had to spoken-word it, that was pretty fucking lame

(Anonymous) 2018-01-19 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
They overdid it on purpose, so I think you were supposed to hate it, regardless of your feelings on the song itself.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-19 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that scene was horribly unflattering to Ego. Also, it's a character named Ego. Of course he's gonna Godsplain commonsense shit like he's the only one who has ever listened to "Brandy (You're a Fine Girl)" and realized it's about a dude who prizes his freedom over settling down.

I disagree. I don't think you're supposed to hate the song, just see the lyrics for what they are - the POV of a man who claims to love a woman but is in fact romanticizing his decision to tell her that oh, she's so great and she'd make a good wife but he doesn't like her enough. I think you're supposed to see how that song makes the singer sound kinda selfish, and by extension, you're supposed to see that Ego is not really on the up and up and also has really selfish plans that he prioritizes over the woman who is supposedly the love of his life. The movie definitely gets that point across... but in a really unsubtle, heavy handed fashion. Hating the song is just the collateral damage.

But damn, Kurt looks good with that beard.
