He really is an amazing actor.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-25 07:57 am (UTC)(link)
He also does a fantastic job as narrator for the Dresden Files.

Matter of opinion. Good at one type of role IMO. And no-one actually British was fooled for more than a few lines.

His accent, whilst not the full Dick Van Dyke, didn't pass muster for one second. He's trying his best, bless him, but he's all over the map. Sounds Aussie half the time.

At best you might say this is a Londoner who had lived in the US for a very, very, very long time and has a sort of mixed bag accent - technically that could be true for Spike.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-25 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
I remember the handwavy fanon explanation at the time was that it was a crap accent because Spike's natural accent was William's posh one and he was faking his Spike accent to sound cooler.

Or he needed a better dialect coach.

One of those two.

NA

If I was going to write fic with him in it, my explanation would be that he's a vampire and all the time he's spent in other parts of the world has muddled his accent. And maybe that his more egregious pronunciations were designed to annoy.

He based his accent on Anthony Stewart-Head's actual real accent - Giles' posh accent is fake.

I've met ASH a few time and, fair enough, JM is clearly aiming for something similar, but I think accents are not really his forté. It's okay, though - it makes bizarro Buffy-sense

Not fake exactly - more one of the options for ASH to use depending on context. I do similar - I can be full-on "Cambridge University" when I choose, but not in all situations.

JM got it some of the times but with wobbles.

I'm sure he was on his own for the accent early on. I think I remember reading somewhere that the white T-shirt he wore under his jacket was - at least initially - a shirt he already owned and he wore it as part of his wardrobe until it wore out. Like, he had to SUPPLY HIS OWN T-SHIRT. I assume Spike wasn't originally expected to become such a significant character, so they weren't going to sink a lot of money into things like a dialect coach, and by the time they might have, it was too late to bother because viewers were used to Spike sounding a certain way.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-25 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Well that's technically true for the character isn't it? He is fairly old, vampire and all, dialects change over time, even in the same place. He kind of sounds like he tried adjusting his accent, gave up halfway through and now has a messed up dialect you can't really place anymore.

I didn't realize David Anders wasn't British until way after Alias.

And Melanie Lynskey's real accent always surprises me, even though the first role I saw her in was as a New Zealander. Her American accent just sounds really natural to me, I guess.

Wait... he isn't?

And Lucy Lawless' American accent comes across flawless as well, despite being from New Zealand.

I don't know how accurate his British accent was, as I'm American, but I totally think of David Anders as British, and his American accent roles sound so wrong to me.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-25 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
Wait, what? He's not...?

(Anonymous) 2018-01-25 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
Nope!

Born and raised in good ol' California.

My illusion has broken

(Anonymous) 2018-01-25 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
There, there, it'll be okay...

(Anonymous) 2018-01-25 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
You wouldn't be the first one that has had that realization years later.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-25 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
His crap accent is famously, hilariously bad so I'm surprised to see so many posters took it for the real thing. It's regarded with affection, though.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-25 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
It is hilariously bad, but it's internally consistent, so I can see people thinking it's SOME kind of British accent.

That's more than I can say for Angel's occasional forays into an Irish accent!

(Anonymous) 2018-01-25 04:17 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL, the Irish was my fave, I loved how he'd just...drop the volume of his voice, like if you can't hear how bad it is, it doesn't matter! And then they just phased it out eventually in flashbacks.
