What fandom trends do you dislike?

thumbs way down

-the hate on het ships like homo ships are inherently superior or a form of activism (instead of a kink mostly)
-fanart that isn't recognizable as the original characte
-ships and ship wars in general honestly

And alternatively, the hate on gay ships because they ~fetishize~ gay people and so now it's actually more social-justice to ship het.

I steer way clear of people who vocally hate on het.

People not tagging their hate fics. If your fic is all about how AWFUL this character is, tag that shit.

Aggressive head!canons of characters that are drenched in social justice superiority that get tagged around with "you're a bad person if you don't acknowledge Character X is autistic, genderqueer, trans, and asexual" etc. Usually they are based off of minimal evidence, and just are so smug.

I don't care how people interpret characters. Really. I interpret pretty much everyone as gay or bi so I can't judge. In my opinion, if it's something that's capable of reading between the lines for, then it's valid (and hey, even if you want to change canon to support it, fandom is supposed to be about having fun and enjoying the media, so why not). But what's with all the viciousness in trying to force others to support your headcanon? Or the sort of passive-aggressive guilting to get other people to do it? ("Character X is genderqueer JUST LIKE ME and helped me get through a ROUGH PATCH IN MY LIFE so it's hard to see others not acknowledge it") is one recent example I came across.

Social justice superiority headcanons is a really good term for this, and it's one of my major fandom dislikes as well.

I saw a tumblr post just the other day that was a few people arguing whether or not a certain Japanese media character should be portrayed as Asian or white, because according to them he's "clearly mixed race". There was this huge argument over whether it was better for him to be an evil white colonizer (not exaggerating) or an Asian guy (bc then it's like he was subjugating his own people, which is super deep and parallels real world conflicts)

a) His parentage is DELIBERATELY AMBIGUOUS b) people in that universe aren't "Asian" or "white" because Asia doesn't fucking exist c) we have no idea what "race" any of his possible parents are d) everyone else in the world defaults to "fantasy-Japanese" so whyyyy would he or any of his parents be white?!

"Character X is genderqueer JUST LIKE ME and helped me get through a ROUGH PATCH IN MY LIFE so it's hard to see others not acknowledge it"

Oh man, I HATE that! I mean, I'm really glad that someone got through a rough patch okay, but you don't get to hold the character or other fans hostage like that.

Politicization of shipping preferences and shipping "slacktivism."

Oh yes, agreed. I mean, fandom is the place to blab your opinions about the series, and those opinions don't always have to be "positive". But if you go out of your way to make shippers feel bad about their ship, you are crossing a line. Some people seem to get so much joy out of hating a character/ship and raining on everyone else's parade.

people being afraid to write characters making shitty decisions and fucking up. I love my OTP but I don't think they're perfect. I don't even like darkfic, and it seems like the most people willing to write something that isn't fluffy want to write intense hurt/comfort stuff that realllly isn't my thing.

Seeing the slow death of any standards about basic punctuation or proofreading before you post is incredibly sad.

I find it obnoxious when fandom gets up in arms about two teenagers dating because there's maybe two or three years age difference between them. I even agree that between your average 14-year-old and average 17-year-old, there's probably some maturity difference and I wouldn't recommend it irl. But it's also hardly an abnormal, perverted, unethical occurrence. It's perfectly biologically typical for teens to be attracted to each other. No need to get up in arms about it. Especially in like... anime, where the ages are often somewhat arbitrary.

I'm sure the wank when A Wrinkle in Time hits theatres will be amazing. (Meg and Calvin are married in the third book, with a four-year age difference.)

Everything everyone above me has already said, and also:

- the whole "soft" and "smol" thing. Which, in one of my main fandoms, has seemingly lost all meaning tbh. To the point where it mostly feels like you're just trying to make the fact that you like a character/ship and draw art of them seem socially acceptable to the "all queer women should be soft pure wholesome butterflies" crowd. Which is a frankly ridiculous and a bit offensive POV that I hope ends soon.

Also I can't express my wtf enough at the fact that I've seen people talk about how "smol" a character played by an actress who is five foot six is. I'M that height. I'm taller than at least 75% of other women I meet. It's okay to like someone even if they're not "smol", fandom.

This character is mommy and this character is daddy and these are their kids and this one's the big brother and this one's the little brother and this one's the baby girl and this person's their uncle and she's their aunt and....

For entirely unrelated characters.

The idea that if the author/artist/whatever has a character do something problematic/something problematic happens, and doesn't spell it out like the audience is full of five year olds that "THIS IS A BAD THING OK!" means they completely condone the character's actions, or are completely ok with the bad thing that happened.

Fanart where the skin color/body type of a character is changed. It's worst when it's a live action fandom. I saw this a bit in early Avengers fanart where Bruce Banner had skin much darker than Mark Ruffalo's.

Slash fanart where the members of the ship, regardless of their canon personalities, dress in crop tops, booty shorts, tons of ear rings, and pastel rainbow colored everything.

The way people on tumblr tend to talk,,,without,,,any,,, regard for how punctuation works,,, at all?

I mean, okay, my own generation basically spoke in code ("omg rotflmao lyk i no rite? Srry g2g brb!"), so I guess I can't judge them too much. But it's still weird and annoying and get off my lawn.

I really don't like how crack-heavy my fandoms go to. I want to talk about canon, not some barely recognizable version of canon where the characters are infantilized and no longer resemble anything like who they were. I didn't mind when it was a one-off thing here or there, or people who were legitimately treating it like crack. But it's everywhere and all that anyone will talk about. Every conversation devolves into crack directions now. It's terrible.

Purity culture and virtue signalling, to the point where they're just throwing random labels onto characters to score woke points and prove how very unproblematic they are, and then attacking anyone who disagrees by making callout posts and accusing them of pedophilia/transphobia/aphobia/being a rape apologist or actual rapist. Stuff like:
"Harry Potter is Indian and Hermione is black, and if you disagree then delete yourself."
"Danny Fenton is canonically trans. Sorry, I don't make the rules. uwu uwu oooowoooo"
"Janeway is demi-gender poly pansexual and in a relationship with Chakotay, who is a trans-masculine poly-romantic demisexual, and Seven, who is agender bisexual homo-romantic. Cishets don't interact."
"Friendly reminder that [insert screenname here] is an actual pedophile because they ship Kataang."
"[insert screenname here] has a bad Steven Universe headcanon and is evil, but you should definitely not dogpile or dox them. *wink*"

Head canoning characters as siblings/half-siblings to say you can't ship them (there's so much 'it's incest' over non-incest ships right now it's ridiculous). Your head canon won't stop me, I have incest ships already, but whatever.
