I hate that it's practically impossible to escape Big Corporate, in the part of the world I live in, and in my current financial situation. It seems like, if I'm not working at the rubbish chain retailer I work at, I'm shopping at some other one and it's just... is this the best I can do with life? Working at some souless place, just to have the mimimum amount of money needed to buy groceries at some other souless place? How did anyone's life become THIS?

Oh god, just about every piece of media ever, honestly.

Most anime and JRPGs, of course. Plenty of WRPGs (Even if the MC isn't young, they almost always have bg NPCs who'd fit). Lots of superheroes/sidekicks (Spiderman, comics Kid!Loki, Young Avengers, etc.). Ender's Game. ASOIAF. Most YA lit (Harry Potter, Hunger Games, Lord of the Flies, etc.). Plenty of TV shows and cartoons (Buffy, Walking Dead, AtLA, etc.)

Plus a lot of times this is the origin story for a now-adult character.

Yeah, agreed.

I thought the Harry/Cho stuff was the most interesting, because it's awkward teenage romance. Interesting too that his first crush/girlfriend doesn't end up being endgame, that's hugely rare in YA.

HP really wasn't a romance, so I can't say she does it badly. I didn't like the endgame pairings of Harry/Ginny or Ron/Hermoine, but I don't recall them being sappy or even much on-screen. Just sort of awkward teenagers being awkward, which is realistic enough.

I was confused too!

(Anonymous) 2018-01-29 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
Well, we're talking about things that were hinted at in the books right now. The parallels drawn in the text between Sirius and Snape were pretty blatant.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-29 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Uh, that's not canon.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-29 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
tbh that's a trope that actually makes a ton of sense to me because it explains just how and why they're qualified to be heroes/superheroes in the first place. It makes it easier to suspend disbelief if we're told that this teenager who has incredibly mature judgment and physical abilities has actually been fighting on battlefields since they were a little kid because at least then it makes some modicum of sense and there's an in-universe explanation for why they're capable of things that ordinary teenagers aren't.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-29 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
It's a valid interpretation of the text but I'm very much not confident that it was intentional

That's really a stretch to say that's anything more than a headcanon, though.

What university? I didn't think people set these things at specific universities, just... some unnamed generic university.

I'm not the secret maker, but my mind immediately went to anime like Naruto. It's probably not that one, because the child soldiers thing is not disguised and ninja does not equal superhero, but yeah.

Maybe a better example would be Buffy the Vampire Slayer?

Signal to noise ratio. The three femslashers in any given fandom tend not to stick out as much. And as mentioned several times above, canon tends to match up the m/f friends at some point anyway so fandom doesn't have to.

I tried to. I wrote 70 Mad Men fics, and it honestly didn't get me any extra reviews or followers or asks or anything. I enjoyed writing the fics though! But besides making original posts Tumblr and posting fic to AO3, I'm not sure what else you're supposed to do to become a BNF...

This!

(Anonymous) 2018-01-29 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
How dare other people think that a fictional character could possibly be gay.

How dare.

Re: Would you want to be a BNF?

(Anonymous) 2018-01-29 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
I am pretty sure I was a BNF once in an anime fandom that enjoyed a few years of hyper popularity, at least among LJ/FF.N circles. That is, I was told I was a BNF (which is how I ever first heard the acronym, lol). I guess I unlocked this achievement by writing loads of slashfic for the most popular ship, and also I was super active on the LJ comms because I was ridiculously obsessed with the series in question, so engaged in and instigated a lot of series discussion. My fics would get hundreds of reviews, even the one-shots, so that was pretty cool. I even still occasionally get reviews from them even years later, which is always a bit nostalgic. I ended up making pretty good LJ friends with several of the other people who were really active in discussions/wrote a ton of fic, so that was fun.

I can't say I was ever really involved in any drama. I think there was a time or two when someone random would get aggressive toward me, but nothing too crazy. I don't think I'll ever be a BNF again because I don't have tumblr and don't have the time to write much fic, and I don't think I have it in me to get quite as obsessed about a series anymore. But the experience did give me more confidence in my writing, so inspired me to start writing original stuff.

my point exactly. Fantasy is NOT just for kids!

Which is a point, except that those fans never try to argue for greater screentime or plots for those characters and instead focused solely on their non-canon ship instead, like I get that you don't always jive with a character but if you really, really care about LGBT rep then surely you'd focus your efforts on getting that character their fair due?

But most of the time it's just shippers wanting their ship to be canon, which isn't the same thing.

oh, god, this. I see so many parents who let their kids do whatever they want because they don't want to deal with a hassle and you KNOW those kids are going to grow up to be crybaby assholes.

a lot of the time movies got picked I wasn't into, but I liked the idea a lot. I'm sorry.

Re: Wedding craziness

(Anonymous) 2018-01-29 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
I agree, but it's harder these days to have a low-budget wedding when a) there's so much societal pressure to have a "normal" wedding, i.e. an expensive one and b) even when you try to have a budget wedding, there are so many hidden costs and just the word "wedding" adds 0s to price tags.

Like unless you get your dress at Target and just have a barbecue in your backyard, it's really tough to keep it cheap. Venues are expensive. If you want to invite all your family and friends, you need somewhere you can fit them all. You're generally expected then to serve them dinner (for a nice dinner, expect catering to easily run $70 a plate) and have some kind of dance or other nice reception. That, plus an actual wedding dress (you can get one for under $500, but that's a bargain and $500 is still $500), decorations (flowers are fucking expensive), nice pictures (because photos are the only thing that is actually going to last forever here, so that's probably worth investing in a proper photographer instead of smartphones)... an expensive wedding isn't always a case of bridezillas going nuts.

Of course you can pick and choose and hunt for deals. But planning weddings is a lot of work and stressful as fuck, eventually it seems a lot of couples just throw their hands up and go "fuck it" and load up those credit cards.

Kara/Lena shippers in Supergirl fandom, or at least I would routinely see 'this show is queerbaiting with K/L' type posts in the Sanvers tag, y'know the actual canon LGBT f/f ship, to try and drum up support and when pointed out that the show does have canon rep they would try to argue why Alex/Maggie 'wasn't good enough' as if that would make us sympathetic to their plight.

Just say it wasn't the ship you wanted and be done with it.

And Sterek is another example, now this one is messy because the PR team was a sack of shit and kicked the goddamn hornets nest of fandom, but I legit saw people claiming queerbait when Danny, the actual gay-character on the show, got a boyfriend and some make-out scenes(and that's when I peaced out of ever checking that fandom again because the fuck).

It's not some huge issue, but I do see it sometimes and it's annoying, plus y'know, stupid as fuck.

I figured that was one of the points of a movie (or book) club, to watch/read things you would not normally be exposed to. There were some movies I didn't particularly like (The Last Unicorn) but it is good to at least experience new things.
