Re: Wedding craziness

(Anonymous) 2018-01-29 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
Definitely. I've been to small weddings, budget weddings, backyard weddings, and weddings that were just a reception/party (my high school best friend didn't have a wedding ceremony - just went down to the courthouse - and then her "wedding" was a casual backyard party) but ALL those weddings cost a surprising chunk of money. Food costs money. If the event is even partially catered, that will cost you. If you want to buy a bunch of food and prepare it yourself, that will cost you. Professional wedding cake? hat will definitely cost you, even if it's small and simple. Yes, venues are not cheap, even outdoor spaces. My cousin got married on the lawn of the corporate building where my aunt works because my aunt was able to finagle free use of the space. They couldn't afford anything else.

I absolutely reccomend spending money on a decent photographer. Don't hire a friend unless they can show you a portfolio. My parents' wedding photographer was my grandparents' neighbor who was "good with a camera" and their wedding photos are shit. My aunt did the "Everyone just take lots of photos and send them to me!" thing and her wedding photos are also shit.

Her mother essentially stole what was supposed to be her grandmother's gift to her and lied about it. I'm on her side and I don't think the fact that they were still being given a bunch of money to throw a wedding is relevant.

Unicorns are notoriously opposed to voyeurism. Everyone knows that.

What's the worst thing you've done in fandom?

Name-dropped someone at wankgate (not in the official namedrop thread, just in a whole other section by itself) hoping they would get the hint that they are fucking assholes.

I'm not sure if they got the hint, but they dropped out of the game, and you know what? I'm glad. They were manipulative, character-squatting jerks. I realize I'm the one who looks like an asshole, but the things they did and said was wild and I don't want to share what those things were because I want to remain anonymous.

Either way, I don't even feel bad.

I fucking love slash, but you know who I can't bring myself to ship? Joey and Chandler from Friends and Turk and DJ from Scrubs. Those dudes have literally the best friendships in the entire world and I KNOW they love each other and I don't have to ship them or feel the need to ship them romantically at all because it's just so obvious. I think if more male friendships were depicted that way, there might not be as many people shipping them romantically.

Thank you

we need to call an exterminator.

That was all we needed at the time but boy did we need it.

He was a good biographer and a dreadful artist. He talked openly about his depression. He loved his wife. As politicians go, that's not bad, and as a war leader, the world would be an infinitely worse place were it not for him.

And don't forget, he was born in the 1870s so his worldview is not our worldview.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-29 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
This. I would do a hell of a lot less slashing of male (and female) best friends if my fandoms actually had any LGBT characters in them.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-29 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
But...it was their fault. They weren't writing good fiction. The fact that they write good non-fiction doesn't change that.

In a lot of fandoms, the opposite is true.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-29 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
Most fans won't ship the best friends. For Harry Potter, Harry/Draco far, far outstrips Harry/Ron. For Teen Wolf, Derek/Stiles and Liam/Theo are so much more popular than Scott/Stiles and Liam/Mason. For Psych, Lassiter/Shawn is more prevalent than Gus/Shawn. And so on.

Also, in a lot of the long slash fic that I read, because so many canons have so many male characters, the slash couple often has male friends which are part of the story, so I do not agree, at all.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-29 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
It's not that fandom sucks. It's that you're not good at writing fic.

You're good at writing about yourself and about your field. Great! Good for you! But that isn't at all the same thing as writing compelling fiction. And it doesn't speak well of you that a) you can't tell the difference and b) you're so far up your own ass that you're blaming fandom for not eating out of it.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-29 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
I don't remember any parallels drawn in that sense at all though? Let alone "blatant" ones. I mean, I get the wishful thinking that lends itself to projection and reading too much into something (I am more of a Sirius/Remus fan personally), but ya gotta remember that just because you want something to mean something, doesn't mean it does.

Why would she have to write a romance at all?

(Anonymous) 2018-01-29 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
Couldn't it just be an unambiguous mention somewhere in the text?

No one tell her that Mercedes Lackey wrote a novel where the main character and her boyfriend literally have sex in front of unicorns. Or at any rate the unicorns show up just as they're finishing and complain about it.

I am unsure why an old man would have felt it appropriate to discuss his sex life with an 11-17-year-old to whom he stood in loco parentis.

Maybe something might have come up at the funeral? Maybe?

But the sex lives of most of the teachers aren't brought up either - the books are from the POV of a child/teenager, in a culture with a lot of Victorian overtones. I suspect most of them simply did not consider it an appropriate area of discussion with the kids.

Oh well I wasn't sure because it wasn't strictly fandom related... sorry.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-29 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
I’m glad you found a use for your talent and it’s working out for you, but fandom doesn’t suck because your fandom didn’t recognise your fic-writing genius. All fandoms have issues and the bigger and more popular they get the more problems there are, and the harder it is to get noticed. But it sounds like you’re just better at writing about yourself and your job than writing fiction. It’s like blaming the editor at a SF&F magazine for rejecting your short story and saying they suck because you get lots of paid work for technical journals.
