I totally do this, though. And I write bizarre pairings for a small fandom. Then I get sad when I get no comments. I'm a fanfiction masochist :)

2007 definitely felt different from 2017, and 2017 wasn't even that great. Not to mention she might have been okay with it, but her editors might not have been. And sure, she can decide one or two additional lines (which is hopefully all it would have been since like the OP of the secret, I really don't want to see her trying more romance) is worth some (more? lol SATANIC WITCHCRAFT) parents actually banning their child from reading the book, but the publishers might have wanted that extra dollar more, so.

Maybe you could do a general movie discussion instead.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-29 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
Pick a theme that isn't too broad or shallow - has enough movies that most people will have seen at least one. Then no one has to make time to watch anything, especially if they aren't into it. People who don't generally stream won't be left out. You can have the discussion on days you feel like it. People reading may find something they hadn't considered before. So, you could pick a director (like Chris Columbus) or actor (like Alfre Woodard) or limited genre (like 70s horror movies) and people could tell about their favorite and least favorite movie that they've seen, what they think in general of the director, actor, or genre, etc.

I've never been into the book club thing because reading a book I wouldn't pick sort of feels like homework.

Re: Wedding craziness

I can’t even imagine spending $20k on a wedding unless my hypothetical husband wanted to invite 100+ people. I can think of maybe 15-20 people I’d invite, and that’s a high estimate. I’d probably do a backyard wedding and a beach potluck reception and make my own dress. If I was gonna spend $20k on anything wedding related it’d be the honeymoon, but even that seems wasteful.

And when there is I ship them harder than the male/female romantic canon couples in media because their relationship looks more appealing to me, and then feel extremely guilty over it because I also hate that there's so few good examples of m/f friendship. :(

Why would he have to mention sex at all?

Something like "There was a man I was in love with who did terrible things. I held the hurt I felt close to me and never really moved on. Don't hold onto your pain too closely, Harry, it can hold you back in ways you may not be able to see for a long time."

Aren't those just normal threads and fandom discussions (e.g. What is your favorite horror movie?, What actor do you think was miscast)? I do post those as well in general chat.

Review/Analysis of Enterprise's "The Breach"

Half of this episode involves cave exploring with a time limit, and half of it involves species relations. Surprisingly, it's the second plot that's the more interesting one.

Not in every society, and not always. I don't mind working and shopping , I'd just feel a bit better about it if it benifited people I knew and cared about, instead of being all about Big Brands and Big Business. There's "adulthood" and then there's just "society gone wrong."

Yeah, I suppose they are.

It wouldn't have to have been a discussion of his sex life at all. Certainly not an explicit one. It could easily have come up at the funeral, it could also have come up in the context of the 6th book when Harry and Dumbledore have several long, personal conversations. It doesn't.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-29 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
There are undeniably things about the presentation of a few of the characters, most obviously Remus, that are also closely tied to a lot of narratives about gay people.

That doesn't mean that they're definitively gay, and it certainly doesn't mean that JKR intended anything like that. But those things are there in the text - it's not projecting, or reading too much, or wishful thinking to notice the things that are there, and then how you choose to interpret those elements is your own choice.

Re: What's the worst thing you've done in fandom?

Wanked and trolled at ffn. I was full of myself... more then than now, anyway.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-29 05:06 am (UTC)(link)
I am so disappointed. I came in expecting a beautiful mocking of a ridiculous "But tell us your thoughts on yaoi" over the top troll post and instead people bit hard.

Exactly. Would it have been weird for him to have mentioned a woman he was in love with? I doubt most people would think it was.

Much like everything else in the books I felt like it was a mixed bag?

On the one hand I thought all of the Harry/Cho stuff was excellent. And while I didn't like Hermione/Ron as a pairing I though the writing was fine.

On the other hand you have stuff like Remus/Tonks and Harry/Ginny and Snape>Lily and the Epilogue which are just flat-out awful.

[personal profile] soldatsasha 2018-01-29 06:22 am (UTC)(link)
Waaaay back in the day I was a BNF in a pretty small fandom. I wouldn't want to be a BNF in a big wanky fandom.

Remus married a woman and had a child with her.

Ask her anyway. It's been half a year. You aren't being mean for asking for what you paid for. As it is, she essentially scammed you and your friend out of a lot of money.

I assume you paid through paypal or something similar? If she can't at least provide you with good progress shots and a reasonable ETA for when the project will be done, report her and do whatever the steps are to get your money back.

To be honest, as unsmooth as the romances in HP were, I don't think they can be used as evidence that she sucks at romance. She was (largely) writing about teens, and teen relationships are always messy. and further than that she was writing, not primarily for an audience of children and teens, but definitely had to write all that in a way that would be okay for them (and there absolutely is a set of widely-accepted guidelines on this in the publishing industry), so she couldn't exactly...~make it real, if ya know what I mean.

I haven't read any of her other work but I understand they were for an adult audience, so I kinda have to try them to see how she can do romance without any blocks.

While it's true fandom in general is entitled AF and for some reason feels it doesn't have to fb writers for their labor, I think your comparison is flawed simply because the two venues are so different.

But yeah, unless you are in a blockbuster fandom writing the main OTP, you're SOL getting comments. And that really, really didn't used to be true.
