MTE.

Any pair of friends (same-sex or not) is pretty much guaranteed to have some shippers. Doesn't mean every pair is shipped by everyone in fandom, or that non-shippers are having anything forced on them, or that someone teleported into the canon universe and forced the characters to kiss, or...whatever OP thinks "won't let" means.

I sort of agree in the sense that a lot of fandom will see anything where guys are close to each other as "queerbaiting" if it doesn't turn into a canon romance. Guys who are friends either need to be 10 feet away from each other at all times and giving no-homo nods at the camera, or else they need to be a canon couple. There can be no in between. It perpetuates a bad stereotype of the "right way" for guys to have a platonic friendship, IMO.

If I had to guess based on my experiences of fem!slashy fandoms, it's more along the lines of "If you don't ship them and you think they're "Just gals being pals" then you're guilty of lesbian erasure, a disgusting homophobe, don't deserve any number of human liberties, and around 300 other comments along the lines of that.

It's not that anyone can stop you from having your head canon, but they sure as fuck do try.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
So true!

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, i'm not going to lie to you: it does seem like a pretty silly reason. I mean, I think non-contemporary college AUs can be really cool for sure, but... the whole thing is an AU. Putting characters in college is no less of an AU than putting them in a different decade.

But you do you. Personally, my problem with most college AUS is that they're unbearably generic and not well-written or distinctive enough.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I would strongly argue that this one is less on fandom than on, you know, contemporary society, and the structure of social media and the Internet, and capitalism, and the nature of what human beings pay attention to.

Not sure. I think it was probably:

I can't think of any that I watched after this one.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I just fundamentally disagree that this is a serious problem.

AYRT

I've run into those people. I've also run into the homophobes that go "f/f ships are gross, they're just friends how dare you!"

I've never found either of those groups to be the entirety of any fandom like OP suggests though.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, if OP is referring to fans blatantly ignoring canon, then I can see where they're coming from. That feeling of "Wait...did we read the same story?" doesn't automatically make a person a homophobic troll.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Whatevs, we're totally getting that next film, and I CAN'T WAIT.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess it depends on where you draw your AU line. "What if they all went to college together" is a different hook than "What if they were all 15 years younger and in the same college together right now!"

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
It honestly doesn't seem like that much of a difference to me

but different strokes I guess

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
It's good advice not to measure your worth by fic feedback or the lack thereof.

Op

I love slash fic. The majority of fics I read are pairing fics. Guess what, I also think Fandom needs to learn to stop fetishsizing gay people so much that they actually ruin the friendships of real people.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not saying it doesn't suck, but I can see why she kept Dumbledore closeted. The early 90's, when she started writing the books, weren't exactly progressive. She might have kept DD's sexuality under wraps out of habit in later books.

(She does hint to him being gay a few times.)

uh, I don't know how shipping two fictional male characters together is "actually ruining the friendships of real people"

what

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Also a whole mess of political stuff to get tangled up in

Like how Churchill kind of sucked and all that

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Rowling finished writing Deathly Hallows in January 2007 so I'm not sure how much time I really have for that particular excuse

Do people really think JKR is the worst romance writer ever? I'll admit I think her romance writing could be better, but I don't think it was that bad.

The only Harry Potter ship I thought she wrote terribly was Remus/Tonks. That was a hot mess, and I say someone who shipped that one before it was canon. Harry/Ginny would've been better, I think, if she'd actually built more on the friendship they began to have in the fifth book, but otherwise it wasn't the worst canon pairing I've ever seen. And I thought Ron/Hermione was fine.

Is it just me?

Re: Op

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
hahahaha

OK, sure, I agree that if we're talking specifically about (1) RPF and (2) extreme tinhatting RPF, I agree that those people should knock it the hell off.

but also, you know, the original secret didn't actually say anything about that. and as a general statement about shipping (as opposed to tinhat RPF), i don't think it makes a lot of sense.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
seriously, OP, what the fuck does writing fic have to do with your career?

apples and oranges.
