Re: Is there anything "good on the internet, these days?"

NAYRT - I've never had that, but I've had subreddits go dead silent when a show is on hiatus. Isn't that the best time to come up with speculation??

... probably not? I mean, there's quite a lot of room between thinking she sucks at it and thinking she's the worst ever. Assuming this is in reference to secret #2, I don't recall anyone saying she was the "worst romance writer ever".

It's a separate term. It's a separate debate (over how much fiction influences reality in regards to fiction consumption) that's incredibly prevalent in sj heavy fandoms with people who take social justice seriously falling on both sides of the argument.

I think there's a big difference between 1) exploring what characters might have been like when they were younger, how they got to be the way they are today, and whether there could be any surprises in their past, and 2) de-ageing characters but maintaining the exact same personalities, mannerisms, tics, and often, inexplicably, similar levels of experience and knowledge as their older counterparts. The latter is also awkward if part of a character's backstory is something that happened when they were older, like the death of a child or military experience, but you're writing them at a point in their life where that hasn't happened yet.

LOL, to be fair, maybe some people consider that approach to be pretty underwhelming.

Re: Is there anything "good on the internet, these days?"

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Not much different than any other place. Well, probably less crackfic.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate how the majority of canons won't let men and women have close friendships without turning it into a romance.

Add four years and I'll agree to it.

Re: Is there anything "good on the internet, these days?"

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep! That's what the internet in the 2010s is all about, isn't it?

Re: Would you want to be a BNF?

Honestly sporking communities are at least 50-75% glorified bullying circlejerks disguised as 'concrit communities'. I fail to see much point to them other than to humiliate people into writing what/ how you prefer. They're not as clever or funny as they think they are either

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
+1000

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you truly that oppressed by me not being fond of something? Keep in mind that's the harshest thing I said about it, and that I never once suggested that people who enjoy it should stop, nor did I propose to try and stop them myself, or change their views. This seems like quite the hilarious overreaction on your part.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Clearly they didn't expect job offers, but I think they're saying they expected more interaction than they got? And thought it was their fault they didn't get it? Until they found a medium/genre with an active, engaged audience and realized they had some writing/communication skills after all?

I don't get how you don't get that.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think that analogy holds up well because both of OP's examples involve a single skill: writing.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
True. Personally, I'd love to see more well developed friendships (opposite sex AND same sex) both in media canon and in fic. But so often in canon, het friendships gradually turn into romance if a series runs long enough.

Setting aside everything else, it's not like the existence of shippers takes the platonic interpretation away from you

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
No, but if you interact with the fandom in any capacity or read fanfic, that interpretation is unavoidable.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
well, true

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
My problem is reading university AUs set in the university I went to.. which are so hilariously unresearched it's painful. "The campus", "roommates", "the canteen", "office hours"... Please, US writers, do some modicum of research!

"The university building" hahaha no

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, agreed. I look back (from the lofty heights of 28) on 15-year-old me thinking that 18 was totally adult enough for superpowers and the fate of the world; or, better yet, 12-year-old me thinking the same of 15! Yikes.
And the enthusiasm of some of those wise mentors for sending actual minors off to find the great evil ravaging the land with nothing more than a magic sword and some advice which, I suspect, they cribbed from a fortune cookie... double yikes.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe they expected to get popular and live off from Patreon like some artists do?

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, but as others have pointed out, there's quite a significant difference between writing fanfiction and content writing for websites/companies. Calling it a single skill is over-simplifying it. I suppose if you want to insist, change my analogy to waterskiing vs. synchronized swimming, since both involve water.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure. I don't believe I claimed otherwise?

Re: Is there anything "good on the internet, these days?"

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a separate term, but it has the same function of being a sneer word

(Anonymous) 2018-01-28 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahaha, yeah, I followed this show while it was airing, and that was definitely tough :D. Add in the fact that it was a year between each new season and that made the wait for new episodes all the more difficult :p.

So glad you're enjoying this show! You're in for quite a ride, and it only gets better and better as each new season goes along to boot. Have fun watching!
