Hahah, for one of my literature electives I wrote a paper about how Stevenson uses layers of gay subtext by making it look like Jekyll's bonking Hyde, and then implying that Jekyll's bonking men AS Hyde, and using the fact that Jekyll and Hyde bicker like lovers to comment on the way Jekyll bonks men as Hyde, and uses the fact that they seem very, very, VERY gay as Jekyll hides his homosexuality behind the fictitious character of Hyde to comment on what hypocrites his readers are for reading shilling shockers and considering it okay because they "learn" some shallow lesson that sounds good on paper at the end. 99 on that paper, pretty brilliant. Probably my best work ever.

Because if anything was proof of institutionalized sexism in our society, that'd be it right there.

I NEVER SAID INSTITUTIONALIZED SEXISM DID NOT EXIST IN OUR SOCIETY. THAT WAS MY POINT. THAT IT DOES.

I have a minor in Women's Studies, I took several classes dealing with this sort of thing. I'm just stating the reality of the situation and trying to explain why companies feel they have to market their shit the way that they do.

I never found the appeal behind Mikimoto's design myself

Because people look more realistic and more like real human beings as opposed to plush dolls. Same reason why I like Yas so much. I don't see his designs as being stiff either. I feel more emotion conveyed in his designs than someone who draws a more plain and cartoony style. I cried buckets during the final scene of Gundam 0080 partly because when I looked at Al's face I saw a child crying, and not a drawing representative of a child.

Hey man, that's okay. Just don't forget I'm in agreement with you. Explanation of how things currently are isn't an endorsement of said state.

Re: 129

[identity profile] vivalanaomi.livejournal.com 2008-07-08 05:19 am (UTC)(link)
Oooh, I wanted to write that paper! Well, not the wider part involving readership, but basically, I wanted to argue that the subtext in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is very, very gay. Even the landscape is described in a manner similar to S&M. But I chickened out, figuring that the internet was just breaking my mind.

Instead I wrote about how Dracula is a proto-feminist text with the characters of Mina and Lucy representing the New Woman of relative independence (Mina is still my 19th century literary heroine), and rather than being sexually liberating (like modern depictions like to paint his attacks as, grrr), Dracula serves to be a conservative force which disempowers them.

109. Aww. Must disagree. That is the single best anime/manga ever created. It stands the test of time. (Even if the anime's ending was a little wonky.) Crazy rabid fans do tend to ruin it for everyone else though.

169. Naruto (the character) is love.

You mean "You're just sexist against sexism" isn't an awesome argument!?

But you're making it sound like girls, on average, receive less toys than boys do, which I kinda doubt. But again, if you could point me to a source for that stat, I'd be very interested in reading it!

I, sadly, didn't have the book as a child, but my Pre-Calc teacher read us math-themed picture books sometimes and that was one of them. :D

The Dot annoyed me too. The Line deserved someone way better.

Wow! That Dracula bit sounds clever.

And my prof is very fond of discussing pedo and homo in Victorian literature, so I knew the piece would go over well. Actually, he was the one who kept on going "zomg jekyll is the gay!" Well, not like that, but it certainly felt like it at times. He was also convinced that the guys in Dorian Gray were slutting it up with each other, which was funny. Hmm... trying to think of the other pieces he held that sort of belief about. I'm sure there were a few. He was great. I wish I could have him again.

Re: 109

[identity profile] poisontea.livejournal.com 2008-07-08 06:31 am (UTC)(link)
I just sorta assume that they didn't see a good shot of him, since that picture doesn't have the best shot. XD If you actually look at his character design, his body/build isn't girlish- no moreso than Kuwabara's is- and his face isn't even that pretty. It's just the long hair, and that isn't too confusing.

I JUST LOVE THE FACT THAT THERE IS ALL THIS DISCUSSION ON ITSUKI'S GENDER AND THE OP DIDN'T QUESTION KURAMA'S. Since the Phillipines mistook his character for a girl for a huge chunk of episodes, a-apparently. ;; Also, the fact that there is this debate on whether Itsuki is male or feminine or what is lolarious to me when Sensui's the one who has a female personality, orz. XD GO GO YYH BRAINFUCK.

Re: 109

[identity profile] hezul.livejournal.com 2008-07-08 06:34 am (UTC)(link)
YEAH THAT'S WHAT MADE THIS HILARIOUS TO ME. XD I was like, man, if I confused anyone's gender in this series, it wouldn't be Itsuki's. I think Togashi's best trap ever was Kurapika in Hunter x Hunter, because there were a lot of panels where he looked girlier than Kurama.
