More job stuff!!

(Anonymous) 2018-02-01 05:12 am (UTC)(link)
I'm jealous of how many of you seem to work in offices. I've never quite figured out how to get myself one of those.

I have a degree and all (just in English Lit, uselessly) but I keep just getting jobs in chain retail suckholes... sigh.

How did you get a leg in the "works in an office" door?

Take a crappy admin job that you think you're really overqualified for. Things that involve a lot of mindless data entry come to mind. You can then either try to work your way up the chain in that office or wait it out a year and use the job as experience to get a better job in a different office. If you can't find an office that will hire you even as a bottom tier admin, many, many charity organizations are looking for office volunteers at any given time. Unpaid experience still counts as experience on your resume. Put in a couple of hours a week, or a day a month, or something, for a year or so before you try to leverage that experience into a a job somewhere. Make friends with people who work in offices and ask them to keep you in mind if they're hiring.

Not gonna lie, the first time was pure nepotism. My mom worked at a teaching hospital, one of the doctors was looking for someone to do some filing, and she recommended me.

Then I quit because a) my boyfriend lived in another city and b) the office supervisor had some issues and took them out on me.

My current job (I work for the county) I got in the legit way; I took the test and interviewed until somebody hired me.

You might want to look into government jobs.

I was without a job and got hired on at an temp agency. They sent me to an office to do a job I was totally overqualified for. Which meant I was ace at it, so the other company asked to keep me, and I said hell, yes! Because they offered to pay more than the temp agency, even at entry level.

Over ten years later I'm still in that same job, still totally overqualified, but my salary has grown nicely and the benefits are great, so I'm staying.

Look for stuff described as clerical, data entry, etc. Sometimes temp agencies can be a foot in the door to at least get you some experience in an office setting. Temps have a bad reputation, so if you do a competent job, chances are the company will want to keep you on.
