(Anonymous) 2018-02-04 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)Personally I didn't find it creepy. I would've found it creepy if Jeff had been the one constantly pursuing Annie and Annie's interest in Jeff had seemed uncertain. But as it was, any active pursuing that occurred was Annie pursuing Jeff. At least for the first three seasons (I quit watching after that).

(Anonymous) 2018-02-04 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)Personally, I didn't find the age difference creepy, though I could absolutely see how Jeff would feel it was creepy for him to get with her. I'm a thirty-year-old woman, but if I went back to college now and started thinking about romantically pursuing one of the 18-year-old freshmen, I would feel a bit weird and creepy about my own interest. Even though I wouldn't necessarily judge another person for the exact same thing.
In fact, Jeff feeling like his attraction to Annie was inappropriate and shouldn't be acted on was one of the more mature aspects of his character, IMO. It showed a degree of self-awareness and ethical concern that Jeff often failed to exercise in other aspects of his life. That doesn't mean it would've been wrong for him to get with her - just that it was good he wasn't cavalier about it.

It just seems that Voltron fandom came along, and the issue went from, "that's not always a good idea" to "you're a pedophile apologist if you even think it might be ok."

(Anonymous) 2018-02-04 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)Especially something like Community where the age gap is something that comes up in the show itself, not just in shipping/fandom

(Anonymous) 2018-02-04 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)Hell, the explosion of Johnlock pedo accusations happened a year before Voltron even started airing, and that came well after the start of that brand of stupidity - "pedophilia" had, in fandom terms, already gone from "ships a literal adult character and literal child character" to "ships an age gap I'm uncomfortable with" to "this adult character is vulnerable or immature and clearly a child, and you're shipping them wrong" by that point.

I admit that I don't usually ship younger women/older men, but the fact that the show itself acknowledged it as an actual issue (far more for Jeff than for Annie), made me feel okay shipping it.
Plus, by the time the show ends, Annie is 24 and Jeff is 41. Yeah, still a big age difference, but at what point does Annie get credit for being "mature enough" to understand what she wants? Twenty-four is plenty old enough, IMHO.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-05 07:34 pm (UTC)(link)While you could argue that Alison did look younger than Gillian, there is no way in hell Alison looked 10 years younger. Maybe a couple of years — four at the outside — younger.
I think if Annie was played by someone who ACTUALLY looked the age of the character, you'd have a lot less people shipping it. But since Alison looked about the same age as Gillian, all bets were off.
Plus, I think the romantic chemistry between Joel and Gillian was so terribad that even Dan Harmon realized that the only way he could have Jeff and Britta be in a romantic relationship was to have the whole thing happen not only off-screen, but to reveal it was happening in an end-of-season twist.
To be fair, though, I just don't think Gillian can pull romantic chemistry with ANYONE. I like her as an actress, and I've at least sampled a lot of non-Community things she's been in, but Jesus Christ she's kind of terrible at playing romantic moments. You can see she's uncomfortable with them, and I think that pretty much affects whomever she's working with. Some of her on-screen romantic partners can carry all that weight and make it passable. Joel McHale simply isn't a good enough actor to carry that whole thing on his back.
