I think the age difference itself was fine until the show started making a big deal out of it. Before... yes, Annie had a naive side, but she also had a very mature (for her age) side. Jeff, meanwhile, was quite immature in a lot of ways. I think they complemented one another. It was when the show made it out like Jeff was fifty and Annie was still eighteen (in seasons when she would've been between 19 and 21 years old). That was creepier to me.

Hook up, sure. I don't think a relationship between them would have worked out at all. But the age difference is pretty low on the list of reasons why tbh.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-04 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't watch the show, so what's the age difference? They look the same age...

(Anonymous) 2018-02-04 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know exactly, but Jeff is in his mid-30s, I believe, and Annie is a recent college graduate so most likely somewhere around 20.

And Joel McHale is 11 years older than Alison Brie, for whatever that's worth.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-04 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Do people really graduate college at 20? And wow, even if she was 20 and he's 35, that's not a huge gap, I was expecting something like 20-30 years...

I think Annie was supposed to be 18 in S1? Maybe 19? And Jeff was mid to late 30s.

Personally I didn't find it creepy. I would've found it creepy if Jeff had been the one constantly pursuing Annie and Annie's interest in Jeff had seemed uncertain. But as it was, any active pursuing that occurred was Annie pursuing Jeff. At least for the first three seasons (I quit watching after that).

ikr? She looks like she's in her late 20s, not fresh out of high school.

The actress was older than the character.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-04 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, especially since it was apparently no big deal that he hooked up with Britta and how much older than Annie could she have been? A handful of years?

(Anonymous) 2018-02-04 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Britta is supposed to be like 10 years older than Annie, even though the actresses were born like two months apart

I don't find the age difference creepy at all.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-04 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I kind of low-key shipped it.

Personally, I didn't find the age difference creepy, though I could absolutely see how Jeff would feel it was creepy for him to get with her. I'm a thirty-year-old woman, but if I went back to college now and started thinking about romantically pursuing one of the 18-year-old freshmen, I would feel a bit weird and creepy about my own interest. Even though I wouldn't necessarily judge another person for the exact same thing.

In fact, Jeff feeling like his attraction to Annie was inappropriate and shouldn't be acted on was one of the more mature aspects of his character, IMO. It showed a degree of self-awareness and ethical concern that Jeff often failed to exercise in other aspects of his life. That doesn't mean it would've been wrong for him to get with her - just that it was good he wasn't cavalier about it.

THIS. Also, during season 1 Jeff had no problem hooking up with random girls at the school that were around Annie's age. I feel like his issue with Annie was that he knew if he started something with her it was going to be serious, and he wasn't ready for something serious, especially with someone as young as Annie was. I think he knew that she'd eventually leave him for bigger and brighter things and he couldn't handle that, and if she didn't leave him for bigger and brighter things he would have felt like he was holding her back. The fact that he never got with her kind of showed how much he actually cared for her, which is a little messed up, but that's Community.

Didn't the "age-gap" thing really get rolling with Voltron antis?

It just seems that Voltron fandom came along, and the issue went from, "that's not always a good idea" to "you're a pedophile apologist if you even think it might be ok."

I don't think the age-gap issue necessarily needs to be framed around antis?

Especially something like Community where the age gap is something that comes up in the show itself, not just in shipping/fandom

(Anonymous) 2018-02-04 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
No. Voltron's currently the big popular example of the mentality, but that particular brand of stupidity predates the Voltron reboot.

Hell, the explosion of Johnlock pedo accusations happened a year before Voltron even started airing, and that came well after the start of that brand of stupidity - "pedophilia" had, in fandom terms, already gone from "ships a literal adult character and literal child character" to "ships an age gap I'm uncomfortable with" to "this adult character is vulnerable or immature and clearly a child, and you're shipping them wrong" by that point.

If it makes you feel better Nonny, according to Dan they do get together off-screen after she gets back from her internship with the FBI. So there's that.

I admit that I don't usually ship younger women/older men, but the fact that the show itself acknowledged it as an actual issue (far more for Jeff than for Annie), made me feel okay shipping it.

Plus, by the time the show ends, Annie is 24 and Jeff is 41. Yeah, still a big age difference, but at what point does Annie get credit for being "mature enough" to understand what she wants? Twenty-four is plenty old enough, IMHO.

Alison Brie looked like a proper adult to me in the show so I never got any age-gap vibes from this ship.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-05 07:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Alison Brie is like the poster child for Dawson casting for this show. I mean, she's 2 months and 10 days younger than Gillian Jacobs, who played Britta the intended love interest.

While you could argue that Alison did look younger than Gillian, there is no way in hell Alison looked 10 years younger. Maybe a couple of years — four at the outside — younger.

I think if Annie was played by someone who ACTUALLY looked the age of the character, you'd have a lot less people shipping it. But since Alison looked about the same age as Gillian, all bets were off.

Plus, I think the romantic chemistry between Joel and Gillian was so terribad that even Dan Harmon realized that the only way he could have Jeff and Britta be in a romantic relationship was to have the whole thing happen not only off-screen, but to reveal it was happening in an end-of-season twist.

To be fair, though, I just don't think Gillian can pull romantic chemistry with ANYONE. I like her as an actress, and I've at least sampled a lot of non-Community things she's been in, but Jesus Christ she's kind of terrible at playing romantic moments. You can see she's uncomfortable with them, and I think that pretty much affects whomever she's working with. Some of her on-screen romantic partners can carry all that weight and make it passable. Joel McHale simply isn't a good enough actor to carry that whole thing on his back.

For fuck's sake.
