While I like a lot of things about Valerie's character growth and arc, there was one recurring pattern that always bothered me , regarding the girls of Danny Phantom.

Lemme just put it this way

Sam- rich but hates it and hides if from people, hates most traditionally feminine things and prefers spooky dark gothic things. Treated as awesome and cool and smart and the ideal girl character

Valerie- starts out rich and thus snobby before an event that causes her to lose all her money and become poor. Only after she has gone through losing all her stuff ,moving to a shabby apartment , and being dumped by her friends and treated as embarrassing for being poor is she allowed to be sympathetic. Only when she becomes the huntress is she shown as even remotely cool.

Paulina-rich and girly. And she mostly only ever shown as being either mean, stupid or the winning combination of mean and stupid. Oh and shallow. we cannot forget that she is shallow and not as complex as Sam and thus is unsympathetic.

Yeaaah. If you're rich, girly and well a girl, you better hate it or you are unsympathetic. Even the school bully was shown to be deeper and more complex than Paulina during the show. Note to dudes- this is not girl power!! this isn't empowering to everyone who isn't the type that is lifted up on a pedestal.

Like I actually like the concept of Sam and I like her as a character when she was written right. But what annoys me is the writers propping her up as an example of the right kind of girl to be. That and the demonization of 'girly girls'bugs me.

Also , and this may be unpopular but I do kinda hate how if a girl from a wealthy background in this show doesn't hate everything about being poor and think its the worst thing ever, she has to be brought down and made humble through her whole family losing her wealth before she can be likable or even considered as a romantic rival. I mean Dash (the aforementioned bully) never has to lose his family's money to be shown as anything other than an idiot or an asshole. So this standard is seemingly only applied to girls and Vlad -but Vlad's case is more complex and different. And he's the major antagonist and villain figure.

Yet another reason why I like Danny Phantom for its good points but my opinion of Hartman's writing is well.. low.

It's kind of interesting sometimes in terms of stage management and narrative and stuff - the way that it gets pushed and the reasoning behind it and how planned and calculated it can be is pretty interesting sometimes. Especially if it's someone who's a pop figure where the narrative is often connected to the stuff that they make - where there's a connection between the public persona and brand, and the music or whatever. And also, it often helps if they're pretty.

Re: How likely do you think it is that your OTP will become canon?

(Anonymous) 2018-02-06 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
Considering one half of my OTP murdered the other half, probably no chance.

(This applies to a disturbing amount of my ships. Though usually it's both parties trying to murder the other with neither succeeding.)

(Anonymous) 2018-02-06 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
Same! Though my younger brother was the golden child AND had blond hair and blue eyes like Mary!

Re: What food did you used to love but now hate?

(Anonymous) 2018-02-06 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't say I hate them, but tater tots. One day I ate way too many of them, and ever since then I can only eat one. The same thing also happened with raisins, but it was longer ago and I like them again now. So there's hope.

A friend of mine wrote fanfic of two of our teachers in high school. It was terrible and embarrassing and I made her throw it away. We came back to school after the summer holidays and the teachers in question had got married!

John Mahoney (Frasier's Dad on Frasier) died.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-06 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
He was 77. He seemed like a really nice guy and I think he was a bit underrated as an actor.

Rest in peace.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-06 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
Nope. He’s just an asshole.

Re: It's always a little weird with teenage characters.

[personal profile] nightscale 2018-02-06 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
The facial hair and muscles he has did not even remotely scream teen to me, he is so obviously an adult and I really couldn't buy he was supposed to be 17/18 because... no. I mean tbh even Steve, Nancy and Jonathan don't look like teens much to me either but I can just about see them as 18.

Yeah it bugs me too, like it's nearly always 20+ actors playing teens and it's just weird, especially because I do think skews peoples perceptions as to what teens actually look like, because when I see shows that do use actual teens for teen characters, holy fuck do they look like kids(not that they are kids but they actually look as young as they are).

Really? I *loved* that last bit, where our girl not only kicked some alien ass, but decided to go on and be a freedom fighter or rebel or whatever, too.

I wanted the movie of *what comes next*, following her becoming a bad ass soldier and taking down aliens.

[personal profile] soldatsasha 2018-02-06 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
I had a pretty bad flashback a few days ago and the lingering effects are way worse than usual. I've barely slept since then bc every time I try I end up having crazy nightmares, so I'm super fucking tired, and I've had a ton of work to do which doesn't help, and a lot of talking with clients and stuff like that where I have to be mentally 100%.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-06 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this one hits hard. He was brilliant on "Frasier", and made Martin Crane one of the great TV dads.

Very sad to hear this news. May he rest in peace.

Young adults are cheaper and easier to work with than teens.

Right? I mean - some of the kids my daughter went to school with were mind-bogglingly adult looking. NOBODY looked that grown up when i was in school. But yeah - i wish they'd have actual kid actors playing kids; i think it kind of makes people see actual kids as 'older' sometimes, too, and thus fair game.

All of that is, to me, the ultimate in boring. I just cannot care. I rarely know if an actor i like is dating or even married, certainly don't seek out that information, just...can't conceive of caring.

More power to you if you dig it, but...wow, no. So far down on the list of 'things i give a damn about'.

That is a good point and probably has a lot to do with it, plus not having to work around school schedules.

Plus he made that really cringey speech about South Sudan and the organization Doctors Without Borders.

lmao

One half is dead at game-end, so. Not likely at all, lmao.

THAT'S WHAT FIX-IT FIC IS FOR.

I can remember thinking that kids my age looked older when I was a teen, I think it's because I wanted to think of myself as more grown-up, but as an adult I'm like 'no you are a fetus' whenever I see rl teens these days because outside of a few outliers they all look so young.

The actor who plays Billy is old enough that I can't really get squicked about it.
