It's a stretch, but I've seen worse interpretations.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-06 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
I mean... maybe. But I don't think so. I do think he was a troubled kid and adult, but I don't think it was due to being autistic, I think it was due to a troubled home life.

I could maybe see a personality disorder.Maybe.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-06 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
Personality or social disorder, I think.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-06 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I can see it.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-06 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
What would be the evidence for this interpretation? Or is it just for fun?

Mmhmm!

(Anonymous) 2018-02-06 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
I see it. Yep.

Autism is more than a set of sensory issues and social deficits. People who know what to look for in autistic people can sometimes spot it in the way someone moves through their environment and interacts with it. Autistic people have this awkward yet conscious deliberateness about the motions/gestures that neurotypicals make without having to think about it. Blending in and not looking weird takes conscious effort a lot of the time.

For the record, I am autistic myself.

Re: Mmhmm!

(Anonymous) 2018-02-06 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
So... you're saying that Alan Rickman played Snape using gestures, etc. that pegged you as autistic?

Genuinely curious, not trying to be a dick. Just trying to figure out where this interpretation comes from.

Re: Mmhmm!

(Anonymous) 2018-02-06 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
NA (also autistic)

You know, I've never thought about it before, but I could actually see Rickman's portrayal of Snape that way. Obviously (before anyone gets on me about it) it's not the only interpretation and it wasn't Rickman's or the director's intent, but Snape in the movies does have a very, very deliberate and conscious style to his movement and speech, like he's thinking each step through in his head as he does it. That doesn't mean that what he does is necessarily logical or sensible or not weird, but I can absolutely see it as him not being able to interact with the world or with other people without consciously thinking through each step.

I don't necessarily agree with it, but if that's what the anon is talking about I can see where they're coming from.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-06 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
One of these days, the internet will stop deciding that all of fiction's biggest assholes are autistic. That will be a good day.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-06 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed.

It excuses being an asshole and I feel like it also contributes to stigma, since it basically links being a dick to neurodivergence. It's honestly surprising to me that more autistic people aren't angry about it.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-06 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
You can be a dick and autistic.

I....could see it, I guess. At the very least I've definitely heard way more outlandish headcanons for Snape!

(Anonymous) 2018-02-06 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
To those who say they can see it: how? What criteria of autism does Snape display? I'm not seeing it but haven't ever considered it, either.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-06 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure if I can go with his rubbish social skills because I don't think he had the benefit of childhood social interactions but there are a few things I can see why people think autism.

Teenage Snape is described as walking in a very twitchy way, I grew up with a lad who was autistic and he had this very odd way of moving his body when walking. Not proof or even good evidence at all, I know.

There's his obsession with the dark arts & Lily and his failure to recognise that this is what is going to end their friendship. Obviously, an obsession doesn't equal on the spectrum but given how poor his social skills are...

Anyway, there's stuff you can choose to interpret and I'm sure people who have given it more thought have more evidence but I kinda get it.

*rolls eyes*

That doesn't excuse him being a shitty person. Aspies and Autistics trot out the "~but I can't understand social cuuuuues~" thingo, and treat it like it's some goddamn mystery.

They've never just... I don't know, watched other people exchange social pleasantries, or even just looked at how their (hopefully non-batshit nuts) teachers interact with students?

By that benchmark the ~Observant Spy~ Snape failed basic spot checks for understanding human behavior, which is kind of a requirement of being a good spy - being able to spot nuances in conversations, etc.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-06 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, some of us don't like headcanons like this because they are used to woobify asshole characters.

And for the vocal minority of assholes who make excuses there's a couple of us silently trying to get by and go about their life.

I don't know if you're the same as certain anons who come around here when the topic comes up but but please knock off the "all those manipulative awful autistic people try to make excuses and get away with stuff"

God this is why I hate secrets relating to autistic headcanons and the topic of autism because of shit like this. It attracts all the trashy fucks who take it as an excuse to throw every autistic person under the bus and trash us.

Who said it did?

*peaks down at your other comments*

Never mind. Don't answer. You're just a jackass. No one needs to hear from you until you grow up. Bye!

Nope. He’s just an asshole.

Nothing to say about the secret, sorry, but the picture made me realise how much I miss Alan Rickman.

I don't care at all for Snape, but he played him so well and was such a great actor.

I miss Alan Rickman, too. He breathed so much life into Snape's character. That voice. That body language. It was truly impressive. It was probably my favorite thing about the movies, come to think of it.

I totally get why people don't like Snape, and I'm kind of relieved to see critique and disgust for him as a person on the rise. He's no woobie, and would most likely be a terrible lover. If this were RL I'd say lock his ass up. Even so, I still love Snape's character, acknowledging fully that he's an absolutely horrible, bitter, prejudice husk of a man that torments children and gets away with it far too much... but I do love to watch a good (figurative) train wreck, and Snape delivers better than anyone in the HP world. He scratches a strange itch that I'm guilty of having. He was my favorite character for a long time, until one reread sold me even harder on Dumbledore. Dumbledore's also a pretty good train wreck, but he's a lot kinder overall, and I think that rounds him out better than Snape. It also helps that I personally find a lot of power and wisdom in kindness. This is just Dumbledore in the books, though. I wasn't overly satisfied with how he was in the movies. Rickman's Snape, though? A+

No. Why can't people with ASC get on with their own lives instead of having to create icons and readings all over the shop?

(Anonymous) 2018-02-06 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
"How dare these autistic people see people like themselves in fiction"

Plenty of other people have headcanons ehile'getting on with their lives'. Believe it or not having a theory doesnt keep you from living your life.
