I definitely agree that fandom isn't monolithic. Talking about "fandom" can still be a useful generalization sometimes, but yeah, you're not wrong.

Eh. I think it works if you're speaking in very general terms, but I don't disagree with your point.

Oh, 100% - I was about to say 'what else would you call it, and the discussion and creation of fan media' but, then again, nowadays, it's pretty easy to refer to 'I was chatting about Star Wars to people on tumblr'. Which actually helps add some nuance to the supposed monolith implied by 'fandom', and is probably more parsable to people not strictly in fandom.

I disagree with the background image because herding cats is actually pretty easy, all you need is a piece of string or some food(or both).

People in fandom on the other hand are impossible to corral.

(I can agree with the sentiment in part though since fandom isn't one monolithic entity, but in some cases in can be apt, like when talking about trends that occur across fandoms for instance).

I don't know.

Is that anything like how people refer to Americans or gamers or women or teenagers or any large group of people that have some thing in common as some monolith that only behaves or thinks in one way? Because people do that a lot.

LOL right?

I bet there are some monolithic labels OP takes seriously. Namely any that don't categorize them.

The human mind is great at categorizing. Often it is helpful: like it's a great help for memorisation, but often, when we rely on too quick and shallow characteristics, it's harmful. It's good to see certain expressions as warning signs, like "all of those... (group of people) are just like that... (something negative). Recognizing the pattern can be a bit of an antidote.
