Then...it sounds like you don't really like the show, you like its application of music.

Sure, the Netflix episodes (and I think it's just season 1) aren't as good without the original music but jumping from original quality to "shit" is huge leap, unless you don't think the show is very good to begin with.

I mean, the show /isn't/ very good to begin with, but the use of music especially in the early seasons is phenomenal. It's extremely jarring to hear the wrong song start up.

I haven't cared about SPN since sometime during Season 5, but the change in music on Netflix is very distressing to me. I wouldn't recommend that anyone watch it from there either.

It's mostly noticeable to me in The Road So Far intros at the end of the seasons, but the music is such a wonderful part of that show (sometimes way better than the show itself) that it's just not okay that music was changed.

Music is part of filming anything effectively, whether it's with original music, source music, or the decision not to use music. There are films for which replacing the soundtrack would be like somehow editing in a different actor, for me.

Though as a comment mentioned below, the last time I watched SPN on Netflix it was only the S1 music that was different, and I only remember a couple song uses that early in the show that were, well, memorable. It's so strange that that happened though since the DVDs, thankfully, had the original music.

Huh. I'm watching it for the first time on Netflix and wondering what I'm missing out on now.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-10 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
The music changes are only for season one when you use a streaming service; they're the original classic rock songs on the DVD. Other than the pilot having five additional minutes on the DVD, nothing else has changed. It's maybe mood thing, but if you've never watched it before, you wouldn't know the difference anyway.

If they're shit with different music then they are just shit. If they're good, they can stand some music changes.

Does your local library have an interlibrary loan system? Before I had Netflix, I watched Supernatural by getting the DVDs from the library. I think the music changes go up to season five, so if you're that insistent on her experiencing the show with the original music, that might be the way to go.

I feel you, OP. The original music is part of the narrative. It's jarring when it's missing.

Dean Winchester shedding his skin isn't quite the same without someone in the background screaming, "Hey man, nice shot!"

Yeah, it really sucks that that happened. I don't understand it *at all*, and it hate it.

Usually, stuff like this happens because of licensing agreements. Shows generally pay for licenses to use music in specific, negotiated ways. And when you're buying the rights to use music on your TV show in 2005, you're maybe not thinking about being able to use the music in online streaming because online streaming isn't a thing that matters because it's 2005. And so if you end up wanting to stream it online, you'd have to go back and give the rights holders more money, and it's just not worth it.

I don't know specifically about Supernatural but that's usually how it works. I think it happens more often with DVDs than streaming, but same basic idea.

And older shows weren't thinking of DVDs, which is why apparently it was a big mess trying to get WKRP on Cincinnati on DVD. I don't remember what eventually happened.

I can tell you.

They did a lot of "sound-alike" songs for the Season 1 DVDs and it loses a little something, but still a good show.

But for the complete series, I believe Shout! Factory was able negotiate to restore some of the original music. This is what their webpage says in regards to it: "Product Note: Since Shout! Factory first announced that we would be releasing the WKRP In Cincinnati: The Complete Series on DVD, speculation about how much original music we’d be able to clear has been rampant. And understandably so—in WKRP, music is almost a character itself, an essential aspect of what makes it one of the best-loved shows of all time. We believe that we’ve kept the integrity—and the spirit—of the show as intact as anyone could have. We hope you agree.
This set features music by The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, AC/DC, Eric Clapton, Bob Marley, The Doors, Grateful Dead, Blondie, Tom Petty, The Cars, Elvis Costello, Marvin Gaye, Paul McCartney and Wings, Van Morrison, The Police, Otis Redding & more."

You're welcome.

I'm forever sad that we'll never have Cold Case DVDs because of the music... but the music also made the show so it's not like they can just take it out or replace it.

I feel like I've said this a million times: only for season one.

How exhausting it must be for you to know more about this than anyone else here.

Not sure what your problem is, but personally I appreciate them doing their best to make sure prospective viewers have accurate information about this.
