You mean the 1995 TV series? But that pretty much goes by the book (except the swimming scene, but if that's what got you through it, good for you :D).

Hey, I felt the same way, OP. To make it even worse (at least, according to my friend who's a huge Austen fan), the 2005 movie is my favorite version of Pride and Prejudice and I still don't like the book. XD

As a die hard Austen fan, I can see cinematically why people like the 2005 version, but I just find Jennifer Ehle so much more charming and more 'Elizabeth' in the 1995 series. Plus it's a lot more faithful to the book.

AYRT

Yeah, Knightley's Elizabeth just seems so angsty, and when she's supposed to be witty and "arch", she just comes off as slightly mean.

I enjoy Austen's writing but it lacks much in the way of visuals, which makes it challenging for a lot of people to connect with it, I think. TV and film adaptations help bring it to life.

Torches, nay, why use something as crude as a torch when you could just pointedly change the subject?

I hear Mr. Hawthorne has taken up residence down the street.

#1 best response.

Also, I always read your name as Crunchy Rhinoceros.

Eh. If you can't enjoy a certain 'classic' book, you can't. There is some stuff i've tried very hard to read and get through, and i just *hate* it. So - no worries! If the show (which i agree was awesome), helped you enjoy the book a bit more, or at all, that's a win!

Yeah - I've never been able to read through "The Lord of the Rings" until I got an audiobook to listen through and the movies to watch.

It's fine to like something based off of a work that is not itself the original. To me, the fact that there's a different version only shows that someone had preferred or imagined it differently, sometimes even better!

Pride, Prejudice, and Zombies helped me pass my exam because I couldn't recall the original. I don't recall the Keira Knightley version/didn't care. Bride and Prejudce is probably my favorite. I really enjoyed the original book. Do you!

I love the book but whatever works for you.

(My "secret" is that I didn't like Lord of the Rings and only finished it because I had to read it for school. To each their own.)

My secret is that I prefer Emma. Let’s all go down together.

For me it's Persuasion, but the sentiment's the same!

I also (unpopular opinion) do not like Jennifer Ehle's take on the character. I don't think Keira is better, though, and I certainly don't want ANOTHER remake to see if they can finally get the character right.

Have you tried the 1980 BBC miniseries? I think Elizabeth and Darcy are closer to the book characters in that one.

I love Persuasion. ♥ And Emma.
