I really wish I could say the same. I came to fandom 15+ years ago, far-left and open-minded. The past 5-6 years in fandom have changed me. Sometimes I wish I could get back to the person I was.

Seeing how fucking thirsty everyone is made me realize I'm ace.

And I certainly draw more as a result of fandom.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-22 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
That's the most needlessly wordy way I've ever heard someone dance around the word "straight."

(Anonymous) 2018-02-22 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Eh not necessarily straight or gay

It could be "hole in the sheets with lights out missionary for procreation only"

All kinds of BDSM and kink could apply to what OP learned about

I wish I wasted less time in it. Spending as much time as I do in front of a screen can't be good for you, mentally or physically.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-22 05:27 am (UTC)(link)
Yet there are people in this thread (including the OP) who feel as though it has been good for them. I'm sorry, but odds are that in your situation, it's not the screen that's the problem.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-22 10:56 am (UTC)(link)
Spending time in front of the screen let me meet new people, though. Those who happen to live in my area, we now meet up once a week in real life, too. We go to the movies, to restaurants, concerts, and do all kinds of fun stuff. We help each other when our pets are sick or when someone needs to move. It's awesome!

Those living further away, we sometimes meet when traveling, or visit each other. I went to Cologne and Munich just to spend a few hours with online friends who were traveling Europe, and I traveled to another country to visit my online bestie (and had her visit me in turn the next year).

So, I guess it's all a matter of perspective, and what you do in front of that screen. I don't regret any of it. *g*

Same here OP. Except for the sexuality-discovering stuff.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-22 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
I think that's ideal. I wished the same would happen to a friend of mine, but sadly, she's still pretty socially and religiously conservative person who thinks homosexuality is a sin and universal health care is dirty socialism.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-22 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
I feel the same way OP, don't worry. I've learned some major things about myself because of fandom spaces,so despite the bad things I'll never regret going into it.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-22 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
I still need a good five years before it's half my life but yeah, same, OP. My horizons would not have been broadened so without fandom.

This is wonderful, and a very pretty secret to boot! I am the same, OP. I often think about how much being involved in fandom (hobbies, discussion, etc) has shaped who I am as a person, and I truly believe it has made me into a better person than how I may have turned out to be otherwise.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-22 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
Doesn't sound bonkers to me at all, OP! <3

Good on you, OP. Glad you are happy with yourself and what you've experienced.

Fandom helped me discover that I'm a writer, and that I am worthy of great friends, so I appreciate it a lot. My confidence level was rancid anus before I started writing fanfiction and making friends on LJ.

I'm surprised by the hostile comments here and people wishing they had 'wasted' less time in fandom.

I agree with you, for me, participiating in fandom has been so liberating. I learned so much, I grew in ways I never would have been able to otherwise. It has been a safe haven when dealing with RL problems, it has pulled me out of depression many times over. It has been a comfort in time of despair. I made so many friends. Fandom has only ever been good to me.

Not bonkers at all.

Every experience, good, bad, or indifferent and what we take away from it helps to shape the person that we are. That you like the person that you have become, that's a really good thing.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-22 06:33 am (UTC)(link)
Good for you, OP!

(Anonymous) 2018-02-22 11:37 am (UTC)(link)
Same, OP! Thanks to fandom I've met new friends, bonded more with the ones I already had (a lot of my RL friends are also fannish people -- our interests don't always matching up, but even just understanding each other's passion makes a difference), learned or honed skills (including English, as it's not my first language and really poorly taught where I live) that have proved valuable in real life and even helped me find a job, and came to understand and take pride in my sexuality after growing up so sheltered I didn't even *know* until early teens that it was possible to be anything but straight. I don't regret any of the time I've spent here.

pretty secret! also it made me realise i too have been in fandom for over half my life. damn, when did that happen...

[personal profile] ayumidah 2018-02-22 04:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Doesn't sound weird to me, fandom opened my eyes to a lot of things as well over the years.

*applause for OP*
