Same! They're almost always way out of character too.

That's how I feel about X Reader fic. Urrrgh.

I think the X/Reader stories are fascinating from a meta perspective; they are so openly id-ish.

That said, I could never read a single one. Embarrassment squick.

(I don't even know what OP is talking about. And thankful for it.)

I just wish people would use a universal tag instead of CHARACTERNAME!imagine (imagine!charactername) which can confuse blacklists.

I also wish people would use a proper tag for any sort of "reader" fic on AO3 because you can't filter it out when only the assorted "characterxreader" tags get used and never one that simply says "Reader" or "reader insert" or something like that.

I actually tried banning (some of) them, getting Xkit for tumblr and an add-on for AO3. But 1) it doesn't work on mobile and 2) people don't tag that stuff consistently.

Some call it 'imagines', others call it reader!fic or self-insert or reader insert. Lately I've seen so-called 'headcanons' that are basically rough versions of imagines. And that's if the damn thing gets a name at all. I'd be fine with this entire genre if people could decide on one unique term that's easy to block. Because am I really supposed to block words like 'imagine', 'reader' or 'headcanon'?

I've got an excellent cure for that. Delete tumblr and never look back. That site is hot garbage.

Don't be silly, every site has its good and bad points. You might as well say "delete the internet and never look back".

I keep hearing about these "imagine" fics, and I get confused, because fan fiction as a whole is about imagining things that aren't in canon...and it's not AU. Could someone -anyone, Bueller?- give me an example of an "imagine" type of fic?

I can only tell you about the kind I see, but a typical format would be a tumblr post titled "imagine Character X adopts you". It's often followed by a bullet point list of things like "he always wakes up early and makes your favourite breakfast on sunday mornings" and snippets of OOC dialogue where he makes fun of you for your crush on Character Y

I hate them too. Thankfully my fandom is tiny and trends older so I don't see them very often

oh yeah and I was using "character X" to be generic but sometimes they literally use a placeholder (ie. "imagine your OTP") and tag a million different characters

I can't stand OC/Reader/Imagine fic because they steal all the delicious hurt/comfort from my faves and park it with some character I don't know or care about. Then to add insult to injury, it's still tagged with my fave, for when I go looking for h/c of my fave, that's all that comes up. It's just the woooorst. Claiming that the super speshul angsty moe-blob is supposed to be me, though, is just the icing on the cake. I don't want it banned, but I wish there were on universal tag for that whole genre so I could block it and not have to see it. Just something like #wish-fulfillment.
