A good performance endear people to someone. That will never stop happening and it isn't an insult.

Well... sure actors work hard to create different characters, but it's not like most of them are so different that the actor is unrecognizable. And I'm not saying they should be, because nobody would expect that! The point is, the way an actor plays one character might be relateable to how they play another. I don't think there's anything insulting about that.

It could also be down to acting style.

And I believe that some actors have a certain sort of charisma whatever the role.

I have not come across people specifically liking a character just because they like another character the actor plays. But I do agree with other OPs here that some actors exhibit a charisma that translates over different roles and draws people in, regardless of the actual likeability of the characters.

I have seen the opposite though (kind of) where a person will hate an actor just because of a character they play ie; if they play a serial killer, they must be awful IRL.

With Sebastian Stan, I haven't seen I Tonya but I hear his character is immensely unlikeable. I'll still see the film because I like him as an actor and can appreciate his work.

Also, that pic, OP. Dayam is here stunning!!!!

lol

I think he did a good job showing his character was human. A piece of crap much of the time, but there were some genuinely sweet moments between Jeff and Tonya, rare as they were.

Hell, I'll SEE something if it has an actor I've been endeared to, but I won't transfer my opinions of one character to another.

This.

Couldn't it just mean they like the actor's style of acting? It is a craft that everyone approaches a little differently.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-10 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah-- I mean, some people might just transfer emotions from one character to another because of the same face, but in my experience, it's more about 'I discovered I loved X because of Y, and now I've been watching their other performances and they always bring something special to the role'. Different people have different actors that they see that something special in, and it's easy to feel like it's just fangirling when the actor is also classically handsome (I mean... I've felt that way before about some much-lauded performances by fan favorites too, I get it), but I don't think it's always about that.

(One of my favorite actors does tend to be my favorite character in everything he's in-- despite playing some loathsome ones-- just because he brings a huge depth to even the WORST characters, or those who seem one-dimensional at first blush, and it's really inspiring to me as someone who's studied the craft. He's not remotely classically handsome but he has individual features that... would be pretty on someone else's face? Like he is clearly a character actor, so he takes some odd, interesting roles and does a lot with them despite often having limited screen time)

I don't really keep up with entertainment news but I'm wondering who this is.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-10 01:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Same. I was thinking of Mads Mikkelsen, but he doesn't have limited screen time.

So, I can't like different characters if they are played by the same actor? Where's logic? I mean, you always discover an actor through a role - and if it's a good actor, there is a chance you will like many other roles he did. I'm perfectly aware the roles are different, that the characters can be despicable, they are simply well performed, which is the thing I like. That's not disrespect, that's my appreciation of his acting talent.

This. Sometimes I like the actor because they can convey such different characters, not because everyone they play runs together in my brain.

I think you kinda missed how people operate, OP. I like Stan's Bucky Barnes, so I watched Kings and Political Animals, and I liked his characters in those shows, too, because he's a good actor. Not because they remind me of Bucky, but because they were damned good characters (poor TJ. I wanted to wrap him in a blanket and give him hot chocolate). Liking one character led me to explore what else the actor had done. Some roles I liked, some I didn't watch, so I didn't like. But I'm willing to watch because I like how Stan acts, and I think he picks interesting roles.

It's like saying I can't like anothet book by a writer, another painting by an artist, another movie by a director, because they tried so hard to make something different with their next work - well, a role is a creative work as well, like all on the above. It's natural to like multiple things created by one person - how is that even a thing for a discussion?

Is the image distorted? His head looks like a balloon.

I like Eric Bana and will usually go see anything he's in. Because he's an amazing actor that I know is going to really make whatever character he's acting on the screen real and fleshed out for me and I know for the duration of the movie I'm going to forget its Eric Bana up there and only be aware of the character. Hell, I even loved what he did with what little he was given in Arthur (I think the Drew Barrymore movie was the only one I couldn't care about and it wasn't just his character but the entire thing for me). So I can get that

but I'll also admit I'll watch almost anything with Sean Bean in it too and not because he's a great actor (though he's amazing if he's given the right role) but really because two hours of getting to listen to his voice is a good enough reason for me. So I can get that aspect too.
