You will appreciate this twenty years from now.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-18 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Just as likely they'll regret not doing it

(Anonymous) 2018-03-18 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Depends on the quality of the tattoo.

Not necessarily.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-18 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
If you're too embarrassed to get them done, then you'd be too embarrassed to display them. Then what's the point?

(Anonymous) 2018-03-18 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
You do know people get tattoos all the time in places not easily seen. OR for their own benefit.

Go for it, OP. Check out some artists, find what you want, make sure they can do it to the standard you want, and then - do it! You can get it on your hip or back or upper thigh, somewhere the general public won't see it unless you *want* them too.

Or you can get it on your shoulder and flaunt it. It's your body, and it's your bliss - enjoy it!

(Anonymous) 2018-03-18 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
If you're sure you want it, go ahead and get it, op. It probably won't be too hard to find an artist who's done them these days, and every tattoo artist has already seen a wide range of tattoo ideas from the the amazing to the regrettable. You're not special in that sense. Might as well do what you want.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-18 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I got my tats later in life. I don't regret them. I wish I'd gotten them sooner. Life is too short to deny yourself something you really want.

I got my tat last year when I was 50 and I have no regrets and wish I had done it sooner. It's the logo of my favorite band, which I think counts as fandom.

I've never gotten a tattoo, but here's some advice I head once that sounded really sensible:

1) Figure out a design and location.
2) Wait one year.
3) If you still really want the tattoo - that design in that spot - after a year, then go get it.

Tbh a phrase or the name of a loved one in Elvish is probably the only kind of fandom tattoo I've ever considered, that or a D&D deity symbol.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-18 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I think subtle fandom tattoos are perfectly fine. There's a difference between a simple doe, and Severus Snape's face immortalized on your lower back.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-18 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd like to get a fandom tattoo, but I'm scared of needles and my tolerance for pain isn't very high.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-18 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't do it. You're banking on the fact that you're going to love this fandom enough to want have it represented permanently on your body for the rest of your life, and chances are that you won't. And if you don't, getting a tattoo removed is expensive and painful and can leave permanent scars.

Better to get some fandom-related jewelry or clothing that you can put on and take off whenever you want. That way you can put it away in a drawer if your interest in the fandom wanes.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-18 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
This is a good point. Especially for people who get passionate about fandoms for a while, then lose interest.

[personal profile] anarchicq 2018-03-18 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm in a similar boat OP.
I've said this before, I really want two specific fandom tattoos. One for Metalocalypse and one for Rick and Morty.

Rick and Morty has a terrible fandom though, and I have this fear that someone from either series will do something terrible like rape or be caught for child porn or something and then I have this symbol of them marked on me.

I can't separate art from the artist because my money goes to their livelihood so if they did something terrible, I'm fucked.

I work with a dude who's a big Star Wars fan and has amazing tattoos (full sleeves, chest and back). He's started new ones on one thigh of the latest movies. They look great and he loves them. That's all I have to contribute, lol.

I got my fandom tattoo twenty years ago next week and haven't regretted it a single day.

It's in a place that's usually covered by clothes and that I can't see unless I go looking, which I did because I was afraid I'd get too critical of myself for getting it. Maybe that's an option for you?

I'm getting my second fandom tattoo in a couple of months. This time, it'll be some place slightly more visible and accessible, largely because of they ways I've changed over the years.

I do like the advice above of figuring out what you want and where you want it, then waiting for a year to see if it "sticks" before moving on it. It's what I did the first time, and like I said, no regerts. ;-P

(Anonymous) 2018-03-19 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
I've got several and will be getting more. I love my fandom tattoos (as I love my other tattoos). If you want them and don't want to display them, just get them somewhere that only you will see. All of mine currently are on my legs so I can cover when I want. I'll be venturing upwards soon, though, to my arms.

Yes, some jobs are still uptight about tattoos, but that is changing. Yes, you may regret that tattoo, but there are plenty of options to either remove or cover it up. And who gives a shit what they look like when you're old and saggy. You're old and saggy and have fucking managed to live that long when many people have not. I will still own these tattoos and show them off proudly.

Have you ever considered getting a temporary body paint job that lasts about a week or so?
That way, you could see if the planned design is truly flattering with a wide variety of clothing and such.

I have a fandom tattoo that is highly visible, but still ambiguous enough that I can claim all sorts of bullshit about what it means/represents. It's pretty awesome.

If you're worried about it, get one where no one will see it! On the other hand, so many people have tattoos these days, I doubt anyone would bat an eyelid, and you may even make fandom friends if people see it ^_^

I have two Assassin's Creed tattoos myself, both easily visible, and I know someone with a Mario tatt on his leg.

late to the party but - OP, if its embarrassing than its embarrassing and you shouldn't do it. Everyone else is giving you their experience but we're talking about yours. And a fandom tattoo would embarrass you. So - don't do it.

Its not as if tattoos are the only way to enjoy a fandom or express your enjoyment of it. It's not as if tattoos are necessary. If you reach a point in your life where you are not longer embarrassed THAT is the time to get the tattoo if you still want it. Not before. A tatt is permanent and stuck on your body forever. Until you're comfortable, you shouldn't be doing something like that to yourself.

and this is said as someone that has a Ronin Warriors tatt that I got almost twenty years ago and still love.
