I've seen all the passion over this. And I don't really get it? Reality shows have twists all the time. It happens. And there are often surprise winners. That's just par for the course. Why is this one so different?

But then again, I avoid this show because I find drag makes me uncomfortable. The whole straight men dressing up as stereotypical women makes me wince a bit (not when it is not straight men, though).

People aren't annoyed because it's a surprise twist, they're annoyed because they feel the most deserving candidate didn't win

But most drag queens are gay men, genderqueer or trans women. Straight drag queens are very very rare.

The person who did the best/was the most talented and fresh, didn't win, that's why.

My daughter loves RuPaul's Drag Race and we watch together sometimes and it's so damn fun. And what anon said - i don't think any of them have been straight men.

That seems like something that is fairly normal in reality shows to me. Does the best person ever win? But I've never seen this show, so I don't know if it is different.

I did not know that it wasn't mostly straight men. It has always struck me as making fun of women. But I'm willing to admit when I'm wrong. Maybe I'll check out the show.

It's definitely not making fun of women. You really should check it out. Sometimes it's so amazing, and the contestants have so *much* talent. Sometimes they don't, but hey - they're just people.

Drag, at least on RuPaul is very trans and gender-queer positive, very body positive. It is also it's own little world, so do take things with a grain of salt and look stuff up/ask questions if something strikes you as weird or off or bad.

Give it a chance!

How is the whole idea of "serving fish" - in other words "you look so much like a woman I can smell your (nonexistent) vagina from here!" - NOT making fun of women?

(Anonymous) 2018-03-27 01:01 pm (UTC)(link)
It's making fun of women to say that a cis man who is trying to look like a woman makes a convincing woman?

I'm not the above poster but I can at least answer the question since. I've been watching Drag Race since season 1 and, for the most part, the contestant with the best performance in the show wins the crown at the end. So for 9 regular seasons and 2 All Stars it was the case.

With this season (AS3), the twist on the finale made it so that one of the ones that fans view as deserving (the pictured queen, Shangela) wasn't even allowed a chance to try and win the crown. She was knocked out at 3rd/4th place by no fault of her own. A lot of people view it was blatantly unfair rigging for the one who ultimately won because she has a popular web show that the company produces.

If you'd be interested in watching a semi-parody reality show that's made for LGBT people, I'd give it a watch. Aside from All Stars 3, the show is great and fun to watch. It's a great showcase of talent and style.

This. The sad part is, Trixie Mattel, who I will refer to here as Coattails Mattel, coasted by riding everyone's coattails. I mean, even Morgan McMichaels called that shit out.

The thing that bothered me most is the feeling that Shangela was punished for doing a good job in the competition. The whole finale was a mess and I don't think any of the queens deserved what happened there tbh.

(((not that gay men can't make fun of women or hold terribly toxic views)))

personally it makes me a little uncomfortable sometimes, but not enough that i can't enjoy it. there's obvious skill involved in the craft and enough serious moments sprinkled in-between that you get to view the contestants not just as whacky caricatures but sympathetic people with distinct struggles.

'straight men'? 'making fun of women'? Jesus, where did you get your info on drag? I'm glad you can admit when you're wrong at least. Drag is an almost entirely queer scene for guys who want to be fierce queens and divas in a world where that sort of thing is highly discouraged in men. There's also male drag for women, so both genders are into it. It's supposed to be over the top, because those are the traits they want to embody to help them feel strong and confident.

NAYRT

I don't understand why so many people who say they never watched the show and don't know what is going on, are voicing opinions. Yes, there are many "reality" TV competitions. No, just because you've watched The Bachelor or Kitchen Nightmares doesn't mean you know how Drag Race works. Because there is that whole subculture around it that has absolutely nothing to do with reality TV.
