(Anonymous) 2018-03-30 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)Anybody who thinks this is limited to Hollywood has never seen the weird way England is often portrayed in Japanese media. Anybody would think that everywhere outside of London is a quaint village and that we still habitually use steam trains to get around if that's anything to go by. Not to mention the odd emphasis put on hilariously outdated religious stuff.
American voice actors get a lot of flack for mispronouncing character names and Japanese words too, but anybody who has seen Hellsing Ultimate should be able to attest that the hideous pronunciations between languages go both ways.

Firefly, for instance - was it really *totally impossible* to find a person in all of LA that spoke Chinese?
It's baffling to me, and i can imagine it's annoying to people who speak something besides English.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-31 12:28 am (UTC)(link)You may have to read that as "totally impossible" to find a person in all of LA that spoke Chinese that would put up with the endless sexual predation of the director and keep their mouths shut. Especially in Chinese. Can't hire people who really speak other languages, because then you don't know what terrible (and true!) things they're saying to the foreign press. Not saying that applies to Guillermo del Toro, but in other cases, apparently?
After what I've been hearing about the industry, I'm learning to just not even watch any film or television produced in the USA, in the name of ethical consumption.

The actors have nothing to do with it, other than they may not be very gifted at speaking another language but...not really their fault.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-31 04:15 am (UTC)(link)The guy playing his super menacing superior is just plain awful. It's not even just that he can't pronounce the words correctly, he emphasizes and pauses in completely the wrong places, because he clearly only knows what he's saying by rote. It cuts his menace completely.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-31 03:43 am (UTC)(link)Before this movie came out one of them was really angry that the best sign language they'd seen in movies was in one of the newer Planet of the Apes movies. And done by apes. She was mad that other movies put no effort toward the language, but this one with APES speaking it did.
