131. ... I'm not the only person bitching about that dump? w00t.

No-one "deserves" to be the target of gossip, rumours, malice, and petty vengeance from people who can say anything without fear of consequences.

"Doctor Who" fandom badly needs a place to enjoy the show and goof around safe from the tribal bickering. If the anon meme was that safe place and nothing more, it'd be bloody brilliant. Unfortunately, it's also a safe place for cyberbullies and shipwarriors. (That said, I'm glad to hear there's some defending going on, not just the ugly dogpiling.)

TF for f!s, where plenty of steam gets let off, but personal attacks get binned.

btw, anon bullies, log in or fuck off.

I'm so happy that mere anonymity have so much power over you.

Re: 131

(Anonymous) 2008-07-19 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm glad that you're happy. The meme is fun times. Plus, it's brought Kate Orman and parrotfish together. What else could do that?

Re: 131

(Anonymous) 2008-07-19 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Together, they could change the world! They could release a single!

Re: 131

(Anonymous) 2008-07-19 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
If you have a problem with something on the meme, why don't you bring it up with the mod there privately? Lolcoholic deletes whatever people whine about.

And since you created an anon meme, you should look in the mirror before casting stones. Maybe you should think about your own behavior.

Re: 131

This is me, logging in. I didn't post the comment you were replying to, but I agree with it.

Seriously - if there is shit on the meme, report it and it will get a sexy, modly smackdown.

It is supposed to be just for the lols. It's unfortunate that occasionally people cross the line into personal attacks, but that is quite rare now that the trolls have got bored and buggered off. Most people there are good people having a chat about Dr Who stuff, not to being a big tribe of nastiness. As I said, it's a shame the line is crossed, but it's also a shame that you're condemning the whole meme on the basis of a very small percentage of people being rude.

(Anonymous) 2008-07-19 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
You clearly haven't been on the meme. "Petty vengeance?" The anon meme is honestly the least wanky doctor who LJ comm I've ever seen.

Re: 131

(Anonymous) 2008-07-19 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm the author of the secret, and... honestly, the ratio of squee and intelligent conversation to fantwattery and bitching is insanely good. MUCH better than any other Doctor Who comm I've seen; they're all rife with their own drama, which is why the anonymity is awesome--you're freed from the wanky history. People don't put up with personal attacks (okay... in some cases, they're WELL DESERVED) and trolling, we just want to share our love for the show. We're not bullies. AT ALL.

LURK MOAR, ANONHATERS. WE'RE NOT AS BAD AS YOU THINK.

(recaptcha: "ENTITLED AND"

I LOL'D)

Re: 131

(Anonymous) 2008-07-20 04:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Let's not forget why the meme was created: to get the endless anon bitching off wank_report. Which it has succeeded in. Point being: we have exactly the same level of bitching as before, just with fuckloads of brilliant discussion and lulz as well, and if the anon meme suddenly went away the bitchiness would still be there in the same places it always used to be.

Re: 131

[identity profile] familyofblood.livejournal.com 2008-07-19 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't understand why you let the meme get to you so much. It's just people having fun - when things get out of hand, the mod deals with it. Personally, I have discussed the most brilliant things on the meme and have had so much fun with crack discussion and LOLing at macros and such. You shouldn't take it so seriously. The "shipwars" on the meme are never serious - the good thing about the meme is that you can say whatever the hell you want and nobody gives a damn, you could take advantage of that also! If people would rather be anonymous then why not? They have a right to be judged solely on their opinions rather than their lj username, the communities they are a member of, the icons they use etc etc. Maybe if you embraced some of the fun parts of the meme and ignored the bullshit elements like the rest of us, you wouldn't be so angry with a group of strangers on the internet who just want to discuss their favourite show.

And before you tell me to fuck off also, the anon below does have a little bit of a point. ihasawall just didn't work out, it's nothing to be embarassed about.

Re: 131

[identity profile] kateorman.livejournal.com 2008-07-19 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
As I said above, and as I keep saying: if the anon meme was just for the lulz, it'd be brilliant (compare the awesome kink meme). And if I was the only person who was hurt or pissed off, maybe it'd be my issue and not yours. But I've seen real harm done by the cyberbullies on that comm. We should stop accepting their spiteful behaviour as just a natural, harmless, amusing part of fandom - 'cos it isn't.

Re: 131

(Anonymous) 2008-07-19 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
And if it hadn't been for the anonmeme, we wouldn't have had the kinkmeme.

Real harm? Nobody should take the meme seriously, and if people are going to get all butthurt, they shouldn't read it. Where I'm standing, it's all in good fun, most of the actual people talked about are usually just being LOLed at for making funny looking manips etc. It's hardly the most offensive of communities.

Re: 131

(Anonymous) 2008-07-20 03:05 pm (UTC)(link)
What about *your* spiteful behavior, Kate?

What about your pattern of harassing people who don't agree with you? (See also: the way you've responded to fans of color over the past year or so.) What about the way you assume that anyone who doesn't see things your way is a child to be condescended to, and the way you refuse to acknowledge that yes, other people may have a legitimate interpretation of a text that differs to yours? (See also, everything related to Doctor Who in the past couple of years.)

What about the way you follow some people back to their journals to insult and harass them, even when you know they're not really in a mental/emotional state to cope with that? (I'd name a name, but I can't remember how much was flocked and how much wasn't.)

What about the fact that you've made it clear here that the reason you're so furious about anonymity is that you can't follow us back to our LJs to harass us, even though we don't go to your LJ. We go somewhere else that you don't ever have to be. (And if you have friends who think it's cool to tell you when people don't like you--get better friends.)

In other words, Kate, you still can't have it both ways. If we're nasty bullies, then so are you.

You're not a victim. You're an instigator. You're acting like a spiteful, vicious, petty human being, and when people call you on your shit, instead of re-examining the way you interact with other people, you immediately start playing the victim.

I'm sorry you were bullied in high school. The difference is, those were people you could not avoid. You had to go to school with them. You do not have to be around [livejournal.com profile] who_anon or fandom_wank. (I've been called out by an actual hate meme, and also f_w, before. This caused me to think, "have I done anything wrong?" and when I realized I hadn't (in one case) and that I had (but I'd sorted it all out by that point) in another, I just stopped looking at Journalfen for a few days, and told my friends I didn't care what was being said in the hate meme. And within 24 hours, I felt better.)

It's not bullying if all you have to do is say to yourself, "I'm not going to go and look to see if people are talking about me any more," and it stops being part of your life (no matter what's going on in places where you aren't looking).

And if the thought that someone on the Internet (Which means, in your case, someone who doesn't know you--only your public behavior--and who can be totally avoided just by not going and looking for trouble) doesn't like you--and is saying so in a place you don't like reading anyway-- is causing you to lose sleep, then you need to turn off the computer and go and do something else.

And if you hate bullying so much, I would suggest you look at your online behavior and make sure that it doesn't fit the bill.

Re: 131

[identity profile] kateorman.livejournal.com 2008-07-21 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
... it's taken me a whole day to work out why the hell you brought up [livejournal.com profile] ihasawall.

[livejournal.com profile] ihasawall was not an anon meme - an open community where everyone can see your posting and respond. It was a way for peeps to give anonymous screened feedback which only the mod would see. I thought it might help shy comm members, but it was instantly co-opted by asshats, so I killed it on the spot.

Now let me guess: you believed it was some sort of jealous failed who_anon clone because that's what the gossip said. This is what happens when you rely on the rumour mill instead of using your own eyes (http://community.livejournal.com/ihasatardis/1427787.html).

Become less gullible. Not just for the sake of the victims of malicious gossip - but for your own sake. Because otherwise, you'll be easily manipulated all your life.

Enough of this.

Re: 131

The ANON_MEME DID NOT BULLY YOU IN HIGH SCHOOL.

FOR SOMEONE THAT THINKS PEOPLE CONCERNED ABOUT RACE ARE PROJECTING THEIR EXPERIENCES ONTO THE SHOW, YOU CERTAINLY HAVE NO PROBLEM DOING THAT YOURSELF.

AND PEOPLE SAY WORSE THINGS ABOUT YOU IN PUBLIC. SEE FANDOM_WANK.

GIVE US LINKS TO THE "HATE," KATIE. NO ONE WILL OR SHOULD TAKE YOUR WORD FOR ANYTHING. IF YOU WANT TO SEE OUR LINKS, THEY'RE RIGHT AT THE MEME. THEY'RE YOUR EXACT WORDS.

THE "HATE" IS JUST LINKS TO YOUR OWN PUBLIC FOOLISHNESS AND TO THINGS THAT DID NOT ORIGINATE AT THE MEME. [SEE: YOUR NUMEROUS AND DISTINCT FANDOM_WANK APPEARANCES].

YOU HAVE CONTROL ISSUES, KATIE. YOU SHOULD WORK ON THOSE.

" "Doctor Who" fandom badly needs a place to enjoy the show and goof around safe from the tribal bickering."

Funny, I have a safe space like that, for the first time in possibly ever -- it's called SMAS (not giving its full name out to the wider audience). It's Old Skool Who, though, centered around an actor / Doctor that most of the wider fandom unfairly hates to this day. (I guess that's still tribal, because some of us are cranky old hags who know what we liked, but New Who gets occasional love.) It's mad, unruly, and anarchistic, kind of in the style of the actor himself, and is the most fun I've had in any fandom in years. You might actually have a place there, because Old Fandom remembers you and might treat you better than New Fandom (even if New Who is what you want now, I see that its fandom has gone weirder in an even shorter time than Old Who did), but we're getting along beautifully without over-moderation, because flamewars aren't allowed (and the haters haven't invaded -- yet).

From the way you talk about New Who fandom, I doubt it's safe from tribal bickering. (And since you're complaining about McCoy-hate, my doubt grows.)

Besides, some of the people calling Kate on her BS have been around since before the movie, and are just sick of her behavior. Just don't be surprised if she doesn't start patronizing you, like she's done the rest of us. (Seriously, I lost patience with Kate long before race!wank.)

Here are quotes and links of all the threads discussing other fans that are contained in the latest post. Check out the evidence for yourself.

You can see that the meme doesn't go around calling people fat bitches. We just talk about what people say and do, and we have limits on what we can say. If you think that fandom should be accepting of everything people say and do, then you're guilty of a few geek social fallacies.
